Gaining Confidence through Micro Habits

Last month I had one of the best writing months I’ve had in a long time. Possibly years. I completed my goal for the month with more than ten days to go. And I wasn’t an easy goal. When I decided on my goals for the quarter, I’d debated lowering the goal because it seemed a little too ambitious, since it was still more than I had consistently written in a long time. I didn’t have much hope I could accomplish it.

Clearly, I was wrong.

And how was I able to commit to this goal and write more than I had in months? Micro Habits.

In the past I’ve tried to use Micro Goals, which is a similar idea. With Micro Goals, you set small goals that you know you can’t possibly miss. Such as write a hundred words. Or write a sentence. Something so small, there’s no way that your brain can convince you it’s not possible. And then once you get started, you’re very likely to keep going. The point of Micro Goals isn’t to just do that small amount, the idea is to lower the bar for entry, assuming that once you get started, you’ll keep going. And from my experience, most of the time you do.

Micro Habits are similar, but instead of being a goal to hit for the day, it’s a habit you want to create. It could be something as small as turn on your computer, read one sentence, drink one glass of water. Any habit you want to start. Something so small you can’t talk yourself out of, but something you can build on in the future.

For me, I wanted to build the goal of working on my story first thing in the morning. That way not only would I be able to get my writing done early, when I had full brain power and more focus, but also I would be more connected to my story all day, and more likely to pick it up if I had free time. I didn’t decide on a particular goal for these early morning writing sessions, but instead my focus was just on building the habit of engaging with my story in some way. Even if that means only reading a sentence.

I’ve been frustrated over the last few months with how little I’ve been getting done, so I started researching ways to be more disciplined and Micro Habits were one of the suggestions. But the brilliance behind this micro strategy isn’t just lowering the barrier for entry—which is absolutely does—but it’s also about building confidence in yourself. Building your confidence that you can complete a goal, that you can do what you set your mind to, even if it is small.

And I do think that is an issue I’ve struggled with over the last few years. I’ve been great about setting goals, but not great about following through. And even if I didn’t realize it, I might have subconsciously started to believe that I just wasn’t capable of it. It has been extremely gratifying to be able to follow through on these habits, even if it’s meant only writing a few words, or rearranging a few sentences.

And I do believe it is working. I do feel more confident. In my writing, but probably in the rest of my life too, because I’ve been doing these Micro Habits. I feel more hopeful, more optimistic, and more determined, which I couldn’t love more. I feel more like myself when I am striving towards something or completing a goal, and these Micro Habits have offered me that reassurance.

So if you feel like you’ve been struggling for a while, and you just can’t force yourself to do what you need to accomplish your goals, think about trying a Micro Habit or Micro Goal to build your confidence. Give yourself a few weeks to prove what you are capable of, and I bet you’ll be amazed by how confident and determined you’ll become. And just how much you’ll be able to accomplish.

Hearts of homes and stories #writing #writinglife #love

This summer, I have been in the process of moving, which has involved all sorts of surprises. Packing my belongings seemed like it would be a relatively tame and easy part of moving house. As I was steadily putting clothes and dishes in boxes, it occured to me how much of my possessions were unnecessary. There are the items that collect dust but have no real function, there are the furniture pieces that have lived their lives and need to be retired somewhere else, even though I thought that maybe one day, I would sand the thing down and repaint it. In all honesty, I won’t, though. At least not in this decade.

Getting rid of trashloads of things and seeing the empty spaces left behind made me feel unexpectedly lighter and freer. Though I haven’t been able to do much writing over the past few weeks due to tons of boxes and unforeseen problems with plumbing and furniture deliveries and other disasters, the freeing feeling of getting rid of excess stayed on my mind. When I get back to writing, I will start applying the strategy of getting rid of unnecessary parts that don’t serve the story with even more ruthlessness than ever before.

The paragraphs I was attached to because of a clever phrase or poetic construction? Gone if they don’t truly serve the story in some way. Scenes that described the scenery in great detail? Deleted if they can’t make me feel some significant way about those details. I will begin extracting words with precision, especially from the flash fiction and short stories I have in progress. But I can’t cut away everything small or that doesn’t seem necessary or functional because, as I realize after looking at folders of art work my children made over the years as well as the painting my husband and I bought years ago using a gift card that was a wedding gift, that a story and a home both need a heart to survive. Some of what makes a heart beat is in the memories or the small things that may collect a bit of dust but make me smile whenever I see them.

A Break in the Routine #AmWriting #WritersLife #Summer #RestAndRecharge

It’s July! I made it through a winter full of power outages and drudgery, and survived a spring season of house hunting and writing the last few chapters of Hawk’s Heart (Stranger Creatures book 5). Finishing that story really hurt my brain, until I finally, finally envisioned the ending, which felt just right. With a major project completed and the search for a house done, I’ve been sitting down at the computer, ready to plan my next writing projects and thinking about all the other things that need to be done, not to mention all the minutiae of house maintenance and cooking. The lists of things to do felt like an endless load of weight piling up in front of me, and I lost all energy and motivation.

Coffee and dark chocolate helped restore my energy and gave me some extra to store away, but the motivation to do any meaningful work or make any real choices? That stayed gone much like my short-lived love of waterfall cardigans and candy circus peanuts. Habits created by having to juggle a fair amount of hours at work while in college and then, the experience of raising children and everything that entails, has taught me that every minute must be used wisely or I will drown in a sea of tasks that require my attention. As the children have grown, I find myself still trying to do every single thing I think needs doing to keep the imaginary sea of entropy at bay. Summertime seems to be when I catch myself in this pattern of unnecessary overwork and overwhelm.

Maybe it’s the sunshine and lovely weather. Maybe the ocean is calling me through my seashell collection. Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s book Gift from the Sea was the inspiration for the sea shells that I have displayed in different places throughout my house. I intentionally left them out so they could become breadcrumbs that would lead me to remember to take some time for myself every now and then. Mostly, I just see the shells without really seeing them. Sometimes, though, could be the shells or the sunlight beckoning from the crack in my blinds, something snaps me out of my ultra-efficiency mode.

Whether it’s a staycation or traveling, or even short weekend trips, taking some time off always renews my desire to delegate every chore possible and to let the little things go for a while, maybe even completely. Habits are hard to break but the peace and the time for reflection regenerates a part of myself that I tend to neglect. With each reminder, I go further into the journey of finding what matters versus what is the kind of background noise that we, as humans, have been trained to fear and judge others about. Slightly messy houses, chipped manicures, simple, unglamorous dinners that don’t involve a ton of prep work and clean up, and souls that light up like flowers in the sun- that’s what summers are for. So, I’m taking a break and telling myself that it’s alright. This summer, I won’t get as much work done as far as actual words on paper, but the ideas are buried deep in the garden, growing into something better and brighter than they would have become if I had kept slogging through a constant routine of multitasking and mopping up messes.
