Good or Bad Customer Service by Vicki Batman
Recently, my sister and I idly visited a big box beauty store. I picked up a few things I needed and went to check out. The sales associate automatically asked for my phone number, which I knew to be for their loyalty program. I said, “No, thank you. I don’t do loyalty programs but thank you for asking.”
She said, “Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I am.”
Then she singsonged, “You’ll miss out.”
My sister said, “She has said no three times. Stop
harassing her.”
The associate said, “I’m not harassing you; you are
harassing me.”
I said, “Me? No, I’m not.”
Then, a customer chimed in and said we were harassing the
associate.
No, we weren’t. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't speak in a threatening manner.
We finished checking out. I said, “Thank you,” took my bag,
and met my sister by the door.
The associate joined us at the door and said we had to leave
the store.
I looked at my sister and said, “I believe we are
being thrown out.”
The associate said we had to leave now.
So, who was in the wrong in this circumstance?
Not me. The associate should have taken my first no and continued the transaction. I believe the big box beauty store’s customer service failed, especially when pressing me for my phone number for a loyalty program multiple times. Once is enough. I get to choose who I give my number to, and in this case, I didn’t want this company to have mine. I also get to choose not to shop there anymore.
With books, I expect to have a good read every single time.
Of course, that doesn’t always happen, but I don't throw a fit. As a writer, I’ve found some readers love my work, and some don’t.
That’s life. We all have different likes and dislikes.
I am sure many of you have been in similar circumstances. Do you give them your number and put up with the emails and texts? Do you brush off lousy customer service?
-I loved it! It was a very
entertaining and a fast read that kept me engaged throughout. The pacing was
perfect. My only complaint is now I'm craving M&Ms and enchiladas. And
donuts. And wedding cake.
-I laughed. I wondered. Then I
laughed some more. Every page of Temporarily Out of Luck delivers a
satisfying story and heartfelt humor. Don’t miss this great read!
-Vicki Batman delivers pure entertainment--once again!

Wow, I can't believe that loyalty program led to such problems.
For years when I shopped at Macy's, the associates would ask if I was a member of their rewards program. I always said no and that I didn't want to be. They left it at that.
I have to say, though, Macy's has a spectacular rewards program. When I finally looked into it, I realized I got extra discounts for being a member and money back on everything I bought. Since I'm a clothesaholic, I signed up. :)
I think if you find the program to be of benefit to you, join! I go seldom to this store and every. single. time. I'm asked for my number. Still waiting to hear from corporate.
She should've taken no for an answer. I would've been annoyed as well. Can't believe she turned it around into "harassment" and tossed you over your complain instead of simply saying, sorry. It's what management expects of me.
That would have been so easy and understandable.
She should have. I suspect this store gives a commission if someone signs on. I thought my answer very appropriate and she should have stopped her spiel. Oh well. I won't be going to that store.
