Of Ravens and Wolves: Magic demands its price

An ancient goddess awakens for vengeance. Mortal bonds of love fracture. And a past life’s magic demands blood.

In the sequel to Of Water and Dragons, Nemu, now mortal, and Ambiorix must fight to survive in the wild lands of the Caitt in northern Caledonia where they escaped capture after Ambiorix deserted from the Roman army. But another, more sinister danger also hunts them, a result of Nemu’s actions in her immortal past life. She thought she could leave her divine wrath behind her, but now she must confront her powerful enemies. Unable to escape her cursed immortal destiny, their idyllic world is about to be shattered, and their fierce bond put to the ultimate test. They will either rise together or fall.

If you love deep emotional stakes, fated bonds, indomitable heroines, rich historical detail, and high-stakes romantic fantasy set in a world of Roman soldiers, powerful Druids, and vengeful Celtic deities, buy Of Ravens and Wolves today to plunge into a world of magic and passion!

Excerpt:

The Caitt priestess waited for Nemu in the deepest shadows. She gestured for her to sit beside her on a flat rock.

“You are one of the Ancient Ones.” Her voice sounded hollow, ringing through the pines and into the night.

“As are you.” Nemu searched her eyes for the truth, but the priestess could mask her thoughts well. “Why have you sent for me?”

The skinned wildcat head draped over hers like a hood, the fangs flashing sharp and deadly like twin crescent moons. The priestess’s eyes resembled a cat’s, unblinking and yellow in the darkness.

“I did not send for you. You came to me for an answer.”

A nighthawk screeched nearby.

“You know about my dreams.” Nemu swallowed hard.

“Do not follow the raven. Follow the wolf. The wolf will show you the way.” The night devoured her cryptic words.

“And I will know what the dreams mean?”

“You will know who you really are.” The gleam in her eyes softened, reflecting pity.

Nemu looked away for a moment. She turned back to the priestess and found herself sitting alone, the space beside her cold and empty.

Review Quote

“Heckart’s work offers beautiful poetic descriptions rich in detail. Reading this book is a sensual pleasure. It is especially a joy to read about the idyllic agrarian lifestyle and the sense of people’s connection to the land, to the tribe, and to the spirit world. The richness of detail in descriptions create a powerful aura that positively fills this world.”

Winter's Requiem: Three female rivals, one ancient curse… #paranormalromance #historical

Buy Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Y6BMP7H

The eruptive conclusion to the Dark Goddess saga is packed with adventure, intrigue, and magic.

Three powerful females hold the fate of the world in their hands in this epic paranormal historical romance set in mystical Scotland.

To find the traitor that still threatens Dal Riata and Aedan, Domelch journeys down a perilous path into certain danger. Brigit is drawn back to Gartnait, but her unrequited love for the sullen king forces her to make a harmful decision. When Cailleach awakens in a different body in enemy lands, she finds herself powerless and is captured by an enemy prince. In his arms, lost memories return, and the truth of the Dark Goddess’s tragic past leads Cailleach into a world of rediscovery and dangerous choices.

To prevent eternal winter, all three must make difficult choices and sacrifices to break an ancient curse that threatens to destroy everything they care about.

Excerpt:

“Why do I sense ye are up to something most foul?” He narrowed his eyes and peered at her, suspicion shadowing his blue depths.

The loud talking around them at the king’s table quieted. She sensed people watching them. “Perhaps we should take this discussion outside.”

Aedan stood, grabbing on to her elbow. “Please excuse our hasty departure. Continue yer feasting,” he announced, steered her out of the hall, and led her behind a storage hut shielded by bushes.

Domelch wriggled out of his grasp. “Aedan, you have to cease this...this overbearing nature of yours.”

“Overbearing, eh? Because I care about ye? It is one matter for ye to gather in the grove for yer pagan prayers, but it is another altogether to be so friendly with one such as she.” His hard voice softened. “I worry of the dangers. I do not want to lose ye.”

“We share some of the same recurring dreams. Somehow our pasts are intertwined, and I need to know what that means.” She stroked his stubbly cheek. His concern, though overbearing, touched her. “You will not lose me. I promise to use caution.”

“It deeply wounds me that I cannot persuade ye otherwise, but I fell in love with yer untamed spirit, and I suppose I will reap the effects of that. Sometimes I wish...” He looked away, his jaw tightening.

She knew he was going to say he wished she were a Christian woman. “Oh, Aedan.” Her pain-filled heart bled for the sorrow she caused him by reverting back to her old beliefs.

Aedan’s hard, dark gaze made her shudder. “I know ye have been practicing magic over the winter. Do ye think I cannot smell yer bitter herbs? And yer chest of witching tools has been moved.” He shook his head in a sign of discontent. “I worry yer witchery will do great harm.”

Her ire rose, and she bristled. “Do you feel that in your heart or is that what the monks prattle on about? I do not mock your prayers to your God,” she said quietly.

He gazed at her, the light in his eyes softening. “Vera well, but I cannot plead with ye enough to use caution, especially with Brigit.”

She understood he was torn between his Christian beliefs and the part of himself that understood the old religion.

“I love you, Aedan. I will never love another, but you have to let me live my life as I wish.” She implored him with her eyes. “I cannot be imprisoned in a cage.”

He reached for her, clutching her shoulders in a tender grasp. “And I would not wish to crush yer spirit, but I cannot still this dread I feel. What are ye planning?”

She sighed. “You will not understand. I told you I am helping Brigit, which will help me as well.”

“Tonight is the full moon. Is it tonight ye make plans for magic?”

“Yes.” She decided not to lie to him.

Defeat dimmed his eyes, and his expression hardened like stone. “Ye are like the wild cats Gartnait keeps, unfettered and defiant.” His hard expression changed to tenderness. “I love that most about ye, but it also fills my heart with uneasiness that ye are venturing into danger, and I will lose ye.”

“You will not lose me, Aedan, not unless you force me to live a life not my own.” She conveyed her resoluteness to him with her unflinching stare and silently vowed never to allow anyone to enslave her again like Cailleach had.

“God’s teeth, lass, ye must have cast enchantments over me because I cannot deny ye.” His eyes smoldered behind thick, black lashes, glimmering with frustration and affection. “I can command one thousand warriors to do my bidding, but I cannot rule over ye. It excites me as much as it brings me to my knees. Nae other could affect me so.”

His words frightened her as if they were a veiled warning, and dread sat like a stone in her stomach. “You have command of my heart. Is that not enough for you?”

“I do not know.” He clenched his jaw, his eyes misting.

“Aedan? What are you finding so difficult to say to me?” Fear stabbed at her gut.

His gaze wavered as if he wanted to avoid looking into her eyes. “What I’m trying to say is that if it comes to choosing between ye and my kingship,” he said, swallowing hard, “I know not how I will choose.”

Beltaine's Song, A future king is destined to destroy the old ways. #destiny #paranormalhistoricalromance

The epic passionate and gritty Dark Goddess series continues with Beltaine’s Song, an ancient Scotland paranormal romance and coming of age story.

Spring heralds new beginnings, but it is also a harbinger of war.

Now king and queen of the powerful kingdom of Dal Riata, Aedan and Domelch must contend with more than Cailleach’s wrath. They must fight enemy kings and traitorous allies while struggling with their own inner demons.

Gartnait, their firstborn son, is fated to destroy the old ways. He grapples with understanding his true destiny, which is tied to a maiden only he can see. She’s either his ruin or his salvation.

Excerpt:

The boy could see her. Joy warmed her heart, but a shadow passed over and smothered the joy. Could this Gartnait be the one Fingal spoke of? The one who can see me will be the one to destroy me. Gartnait glanced at her, and she froze beneath his bold stare. The boy broke the gaze and turned to address the man but did not mention he could see her.

Brigit rose and fled across the meadow to the safety of the stables. She fell to her knees in the rushes, her mind screaming with uncertainty. A part of her told her she must kill this boy, but another part advised her not to harm him. She stood and brushed off the rushes stuck to her tunic dress.

“There you are.”

She spun around, coming face-to-face with the boy, surprised at his boldness. “You can see me.”

Fear and something akin to excitement quickened her pulse. Someone other than Fingal could see her.

Curiosity sparkled within Gartnait’s eyes. “What are you? You look like a goddess. My other teacher told me about spirits and gods of the land. Is that what you are?”

“Y-yes, but you must not tell anyone about me.”

“No one would believe me, and they might think me mad. It will be our secret.” He gazed at her with youthful innocence.

Gartnait’s innocent smile spread warmth through her chest. How can this sweet boy be the one who will destroy me?

A steamy, exciting PNR for Valentine's Day: Awakening: Shadow-walkers 1--Only 99 cents

This series was inspired by my time as a bass player in a hard rock all-female band. Making music is like magic to me.

Sometimes, the end is really the beginning.

Kate Wolf has messed up her life big-time. She destroyed her successful music career, her close friendships with her Hecate’s Fury bandmates, and her marriage. Now she is given a second chance to succeed as author Kaitlyn Storm. An offer to turn her book series into three movies should make her happy, but her troubled rock-star past continues to torment her.

When a snowstorm traps her in a haunted cabin with Kane Devlin, the hot Scottish movie star playing her hero, they awaken more than just passion. But before she can move on, Kate must let go of the guilt and shame holding her back.

Snippet:

Smiling, I stroked his cheek, caught up in the moment. Confronting that apparition had been kind of a thrill. He fought by my side like a gallant, brave warrior, and it really turned me on.

“Wish one of your young models were here with you now?”

He leaned down and kissed me, weakening my knees, then drew back. “There’s your answer,” he murmured in a rough voice.

A Halloween Paranormal Romance complete series

If you are looking for a Halloweeny read, check out this series:

The five young women of Hecate’s Fury are more than rock stars.

They are Shadow-walkers, chosen to help the supernatural world.

There’s just one problem. No one trained them.

(Each book is a standalone love story.)

                                              The Story behind Shadow-walkers

"Music is the strongest form of magic." Marilyn Manson

This series is inspired by my time as a rock and roll musician. Because of my love of everything otherworldly, I added a paranormal element to create a romance series featuring five young women in a controversial hard rock band who have supernatural powers. I always felt making music is a kind of magic, so this seemed like a natural addition.

Each story is a standalone love story. I'm really excited about this series because it's true to my heart. Plus, there is music to go along with this book series. I'm writing and recording songs again with my husband under the name Hecate’s Fury, the fictional band in my series.

Wolf Magic

I’ve always admired wolves. From afar. Until I recently had the chance to visit the Sedona Wolf Sanctuary with my husband.

Being inside the wolf enclosure and having wolves roam around and approach me was a magical experience. I got wolf kisses, and I bonded with Larka, the alpha she-wolf. We have a lot in common. Both of us are older females with arthritis.

Larka keeps the pack together. They can’t howl until she says it’s okay to do so. Her story has a happy ending, but it wasn’t always that way. She was abused by a man who previously owned her. She found her mate at the sanctuary, but Dakota sadly died. She almost didn’t survive her loss, and now she has decided to spend her remaining years as a lone wolf, but she still wields strength.

I have a lot of respect for her. She’s a survivor.

I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress and health issues lately, and visiting this mystical place was just what I needed. Along with hanging out with wolves, the group and I performed a sage smudging around a medicine wheel. The wolf sanctuary is situated on a spot with mystical importance to Native Americans, and that feeling was palpable.

My soul has been healed.

A New Perspective on Life

There’s nothing like a series of health scares to open your eyes. That’s what happened to me in July and into August. My experience was horrible, painful, and distressing. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m doing better. My journey into Hell started with what appears to have been caused by stress and a stomach virus that led to blood sugar fluctuations and a tweaked neck. Fun times. I simply wasn’t listening to my body trying to tell me to chill out and not do activities that strain my neck. Lesson learned.

I’ve been addressing my stress by starting Tai Chi, and it’s helping. I should have been doing this a long time ago. Yoga breathing exercises are also helping me stay calm.

All of this has put my writing and my whole life on hold. I had finished the first draft of my vampire thriller right before this happened. Streams of thoughts and ideas about changes have come to me in spurts, and I have been making notes to review later when I can spend more time on the computer. This has turned out to be a good break from my story. I can return to it with fresh eyes and ideas on how to expand areas.

I also started reading books again, something I used to do all the time until I guess I lost focus. Reading other stories helps with my writing process, and it is a nice escape from life stresses.

Even though my experience was one of the worst for me, it also helped me open my eyes and start living better.

Unreliable Narrative Storytelling Tool

For my vampire thriller, I decided to write it in first person, and I am using a writing tool I've never considered before--the Unreliable Narrator.

This is a tool often used in suspense and mystery novels to deliberately or unintentionally mislead readers, creating suspense, depth, and complexity.

Examples of Unreliable Narrator are:

Deliberate Liars: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Both lead characters have their own version of events and hidden agendas.

Mentally Disturbed or Confused: American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. The main character may or may not be a serial killer. His unreliable narration is fueled by mental instability.

Naive or Biased: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The young boy Huck often misinterprets the actions and motivations of the adults around him, creating dramatic irony for the reader.

In my story, the main character's thoughts are twisted by magic, and he doesn't remember events as they actually happened, creating suspense and surprises for readers.

The Unreliable Narrator can be a powerful storytelling tool.

Writing: Trying a New Genre Part 2

Well, it's not that easy to write non-romance after writing romance for years. LOL

However, I'm not one to give up so easily.

Instead of focusing on a couple who will end up together at the end of the story only after conflicts that keep them apart, I must focus on suspense, action, and witty dialogue. I'm thinking about something similar to The Avengers and how those characters interact while trying to save the world. There's comedy woven into darkness and plenty of thrills. Joss Whedon is a master at all of those storytelling components. He also did this extremely well with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

It's not too much of a hair-pulling experience though, maybe because my romances leaned toward being plot-driven.

So far, I have a rough draft that is starting to take shape, and I'm leaning toward a bit of a psychological thriller by utilizing the unreliable narrative tool. I like the challenge of telling this story through the eyes of a jaded old vampire who is an unlikely hero.

I don't like to give away too much when I'm creating a story, but I will divulge that the videos and images of the recent Los Angeles anti-ICE protests and riots are helping with my research.

Here's a tentative first line: There are predators, and there are prey.

Writing: Trying a New Genre

We all get stuck in ruts at different stages in life. I'm in a writing rut right now. I've been writing in romance sub-genres for a few years. If I say how many, I date myself. :)

I'm sick of writing romance and writing sex scenes. How many different ways can you write a sex scene? Don't answer that. I'm sure there are many options for sex scenes, but I just don't want to do it anymore. At least right now.

Maybe if I try something new, that will wipe away my creative cobwebs and bring me back to romance writing with a fresh outlook. Maybe not.

I have this idea for a vampire thriller that's very relevant to all the rising hate and fear we are experiencing here in the U.S. Writing this story is a good way for me to deal with my anxiety and anger over the sorry state of our country. It's cheaper than paying for therapy.

Anyway, I'm working on the first draft, and it's refreshing to write non-romance, but it's also a challenge because I'm not used to it. I'm also writing this in first person from a jaded, grief-stricken, old male vampire's POV, so it can be dark at times to be in his headspace.

I'm excited to see where this new direction will take me.

Coping with anxiety

As I witness the country imploding, I'm trying to find ways to cope with anxiety. Limiting my exposure to the news is helping. So is the punching bag I just bought. Exercise is a great way to de-stress, and I'm going to try Tai-Chi.

Here is a list of other ways to cope with anxiety:

1. Reading positive quotes.

2. Watching old shows I love. I call them my "comfort shows."

3. Watching comedies. Laughing is a great way to relieve anxiety.

4. Talking with like-minded friends to vent.

5. Keep busy with tasks around the house. I'm scanning and uploading old photos to my computer. It's also nice to see those old memories.

6. Avoid talking about politics.

7. Get out of the house and do things you enjoy.

8. Repeat calming mantras or meditate.

9. Read a good book.

10. Keep a journal.

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.

New Year's Eve traditions

The first known New Year's Eve celebration is believed to be in 2000 BC in Mesopotamia. This one occurred during the vernal equinox in March. The New Year wasn't celebrated January 1st until Julius Caesar developed the solar-based Julian calendar. Another reason Romans celebrated the New Year on January 1st was to honor the two-faced Roman god Janus of new beginnings. He could go back to the past and move forward into the future. Ancient Romans made offerings to the god of beginnings, decorated their home with laurel branches, and exchanged gifts.

The midnight New Year's kiss is also believed to have originated in ancient Rome during the Saturnalia celebration. This pagan festival involved a lot of singing, dancing, drinking, socializing, exchanging gifts, and lots of kissing. In German and English folklore, the New Year's Eve kiss brings good luck. The person you kiss contributes to the fate of your year so pick your kissing partner wisely.

I hope this year brings good luck to all of us, but I'm pessimistic about it. It's already off to a bad start with the terrible fires in Los Angeles. Maybe I kissed the wrong person.

Happy Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is considered a day when bad things might happen, but this is primarily a Western and Christian belief because Judas the betrayer was the 13th guest at the Last Supper and the Knights Templar were arrested on Friday the 13th. In Norse mythology, Loki the god of mischief is often linked with the number 13 and considered bad luck.

Ancient Egyptians believed 13 was a lucky number as it was associated with their belief in the 13 stages of life, including death as a transition to eternal life. Also, India does not associate Friday the 13th with bad luck.

I think it’s just another day on the calendar.

Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect - Ralph Waldo Emerson

A history of women's suffering

In case American women have forgotten the history of women’s suffering, some of them obviously have, here is a list of what we had to endure before equal rights.

Married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law.

Women were not allowed to vote.

Women had to submit to laws when they had no voice in their formation.

Married women had no property rights.

Husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity.

Divorce and child custody laws favored men, giving no rights to women.

Women had to pay property taxes although they had no representation in the levying of these taxes.

Most occupations were closed to women and when women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned.

Women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law.

Women had no means to gain an education since no college or university would accept women students.

With only a few exceptions, women were not allowed to participate in the affairs of the church.

Women were robbed of their self-confidence and self-respect, and were made totally dependent on men.

I am so disappointed in the white women who voted for Trump. Many were my family members and so-called friends. Our rights are in peril, and anyone who thinks otherwise is either ignorant or brainwashed.

A double-standard

I don’t usually post political stuff, but I’ve had it. The U.S. election rhetoric is heating up, and some of it is deeply offensive to women.

Vance is vilifying women for not having children with his childish cat lady comments. What about men who decide to remain single and not have kids? Why is this a double standard? First of all, it’s a personal choice, and sometimes a physical issue, as to why a woman might not have children. Don’t tread on us, Vance! Mind your own damn business.

The other offensive comment I’ve seen from MAGAs is that Kamala had to give blow jobs to get where she is today. This statement claims that women are only successful if they screw their way to the top. I am so offended by this comment. I don’t know if she did this, and I don’t care. So what if she slept with men? Women shouldn’t be vilified for having a healthy sex life.

I have never been so offended in my life by political statements.

And then there is the abortion issue, which is more about women’s healthcare. This is serious.

Women need to show their displeasure at the voting booth this November. Vote for the candidate who will fight for women’s rights.

This is also why I will never read a book with a weak, helpless female lead character. Fearless Females rule!

Covid in fiction writing--Yea or Nay?

I'm just getting over a bad case of Covid so that's the only thing on my mind right now. I had it before, but this time was really horrible. It's slow going, but I'm improving.

Ever since Covid changed everything for everyone, I've been hesitant to write a contemporary story because I don't know if I should address Covid or set the story in an alternate world where Covid never happened. I had planned on expanding on a series that I finished and published before Covid, but I've put that on hold until I can decide what I want to do.

Covid is here to stay, and different variants keep popping up. It's much worse than the flu. I only had a case of the flu once in my life. I've had Covid twice in two years. And growing immunity? Good luck with that with all the variants. It's a huge part of our lives now, but does it belong in fiction? I guess it depends on the story. It probably works in a thriller. Covid cases probably don't work well in a romance unless you want to show how two people get along during a shutdown, or maybe they nurse one another back to health. And Covid must be putting a damper on the dating scene. I'm married so I really don't know.

I think if Covid fits with the plot, then it might work in a story. Otherwise, it could be glossed over--it's there but not really affecting anything in a big way.

Hyenas and Matriarchy and a pseudo-penis

I was going to post about matriarchy vs. patriarchy given all the things that have been happening in the U.S. concerning a woman's right to choose, and the chance we might have our first female president. However, I stumbled on spotted hyenas. I knew they were matriarchal, but I didn't know they have penises. Yes, the females have a penis, technically called a pseudo-penis. www.genderinclusivebiology.com

This article explains it better, but all female hyenas have functional penises they use to mount & give birth. Erect penises are a sign of submission in the matriarchal society of hyenas. The female hyena without the erect penis is the dominant leader of the entire pack.

I found this information fascinating. Is this an evolutionary device? There are two main theories about the evolution of the pseudo-penis:

Control over mating: The pseudo-penis gives females more control over who they mate with.

Camouflage: The pseudo-penis may act as a masculine "camouflage" to deter aggression from other females, especially for female cubs at risk of infanticide.

Other than the female hyenas being badass, what does this say about them? Is this the right way to run a society? Males aren't treated very well in this matriarchal society, but in a patriarchal society, females aren't treated very well. There needs to be a balance. I believe this is the only way for a society to truly prosper.

Read about my badass females (without penises, lol).

Choosing the right words

As I go through and self-edit my latest book, I am at the stage where I'm nitpicking my word choices. Words do matter. This manuscript has been edited by others, but sometimes you need to take the time and really comb through your story. I found some verbs that didn't seem strong enough. I use "fill" a lot in my writing. For example: Smoke filled the room. There are better word choices for this sentence like "Smoke permeated the room." It's much stronger and describes the scene better. "Fill" works most of the time, but if a stronger verb can be used, that's the wiser choice. Your readers will appreciate you doing your best to make their experience more enjoyable.

So take the time to self-edit your story before hitting that publishing button.
