The ‘tween time—Thanksgiving to New Year

I love this time of year, where every street shines and every TV commercial sparkles and shimmers. Christmas tree lights twinkle and the eyes of children widen and gleam with anticipation.

And then, on January 2, it seems to all go away at once. Whoosh! No more lights, no more sparkle. Snow turns brown and there’re long, dark days ahead before the next bright, fun time—for some, Memorial Day in May. Sigh.

So lucky for me, this book takes place in that bright time of year…

The Goodman series, Book Two: One Woman Only

Blurb:
As one of a set of triplets, Jonah Goodman has always stood out as the least academic—and the last one to take the world, or commitment, seriously. Thing is, that’s not really who he is. But who can he convince of that? Not his family, who see him as they always have. And maybe not his one love, the sweetheart he left behind in high school but with whom he is now sharing an erotic holiday. Will he get his second chance to prove to Kelly that he is a loving man who wants more than a sensual few days, but a real relationship with the woman he lost once and doesn’t want to lose again? With that chance and Kelly's love, Jonah knows that a "good man" can become even better.

Excerpt:
Jonah pulled in the driveway behind Daniel's old Volvo. Man, that thing had seen better days, but Daniel seemed to love it. At least with Daniel living close, Jonah could help keep the thing in tune and running.

"Speak of the devil," Jonah said, as Daniel exited the house with his son, Timmy.

"Jonah!" Timmy screamed his name and came running for him. Jonah scooped the boy into his arms, laughing.

"What has you so excited, huh?"

The boy’s dark eyes sparkled and his mouth held a wide smile. "My dad got the job you told him about and the school is really cool and we're going up next week to look for a new house for all of us and I might even get a dog."

"A dog? Wow! No wonder you're so excited."

"I know. And right now, we're going to get ice cream for dessert because gramma is making supper and she said she wanted some ice cream. What kind do you like, Jonah?"

 "Vanilla for me."

Timmy scrunched his face into a scowl. “Vanilla?"

"Well, with lots of chocolate sauce on it."

The boy smiled again. "That's okay, then." Then he twisted to throw a disparaging look at Ginger. "Except Dad says your heap is in the way. What's a heap? I thought you drove a car."

Jonah looked to Daniel who stood laughing softly at Tim's rant. He raised his brows and said meaningfully, "I don't drive a car, Tim. I drive a classic, original 1965 GTO. It's very special. Her name is Ginger. Wanna go for ice cream in Ginger?"

Tim twisted toward Daniel so fast, Jonah almost dropped him. "Can we Dad? Can we take Ginger?"

With a wry smile, Daniel took Tim from Jonah. "Not this time. We have your car seat in our car. But later we can go out if your Uncle Jonah says it's okay."

If possible, Tim's eyes grew even larger. "You're my uncle? I've never had an uncle before."

"Now you have two of them. Me and Mark. Remember Mark from the wedding?"

"Is that the man who kept talking about math and stuff?" Tim asked Daniel.

"That’s him." Daniel held out his hand to shake and Jonah took it firmly. "What brings you home this weekend?"

"Wanted to see Mom and Dad now that all the hoopla is over. Zeb said to tell you hi and that he'll be up with me for Christmas to meet everybody."

"It'll be good to see him."

"So I guess congratulations are due for the new job? When do you start? I thought you had to finish the year up in New Hampshire."

Timmy squirmed to get down, so Daniel set him on his feet. "Don't go near the street."

"Okay, Dad," Tim shouted as he took off across the front yard, arms spread wide like an airplane.

"It seems that while we were here over Thanksgiving, the headmaster filled my spot. They don't acknowledge that Eve and I created a scandal, and they aren't accusing us of creating a scandal—"

"But they want any possible scandal gone far, far away."

"You got it." Daniel shrugged. "Once I spoke with the president of the school down here, I was ready to make the move. We went down to Asheville to meet her and look over the campus the day after we got back, and they offered me the job later that afternoon. We're ready to start our new lives. I have enough money to tide us over, and it’s only a few weeks before I start in Asheville, in the new year."

"Asheville is a good place to live. I'm glad things are working out for you."

"Eve and I will be going after the weekend to find a temporary place to live while we look for a house, and to get Tim enrolled in school. Then we'll be there, getting used to the town and getting a feel for the school."

"You'll do great, Daniel. They're lucky to have you."

"Thanks." Daniel stole a glance over Jonah's left shoulder. "Looks like you might be lucky, too."

Jonah turned to see what Daniel was talking about, just in time to see Kelly's RAV4 turn the corner. His heart rate skipped with that little bit of contact. Damn it. She didn’t even see him. Didn't wave or honk the horn. And still his heart knew her. And wanted her.

Just like other parts of his anatomy.

It’s race season—start your engines!

This book takes place between Thanksgiving and New Year, but NASCAR season is summer. The hero in One Woman Only is a mechanic extraordinaire who has worked with a NASCAR team but now works with his uncle in a family garage. His life is good but it becomes so much better when an old girlfriend—the only girl he’s ever really loved—comes back to the area. He’s thrilled. Her, not so much. But you know what they say about racing: even when you drive in circles, eventually you cross the finished line. If you’re one of the lucky ones, that checkered flag waves you into the winners’ circle of love.

"Well, look what the space time continuum allowed into our orbit," Mark said with only a slight slur. Jonah wondered how many beers he'd had.

Jonah slapped Mark on the shoulder. "Good to see you, Einstein. How's it hanging?"

"With gravity, like everything else that hangs." Mark hiccoughed and then started laughing. Good God. Someone needed to cut him off already.

"Hey, brother." Daniel slid off his stool and gave Jonah a one-armed hug. "Good to see you made it up in time to share a drink with us."

"Looks like I'd have to down quite a few to catch up with you two." Jonah held up his hand to capture the bartender's attention and then made a circular motion over his brother's glasses to indicate another round. Daniel moved down a seat so Jonah could sit between them.

"You’d think so, right? We've been here a while, but this is my second beer and Mark’s only had one and a half." Daniel picked up his bottle of beer and finished it off.

Jonah cast another glance at Mark, who nodded his head to something only he could hear. "You’re kidding."

"Nope. Something tells me our brother doesn’t drink much."

The bartender set three bottles in front of the brothers and swept away the empties. Jonah took a swig and looked around. "Mostly guys in here tonight. What's up?"

"Most of the women are home fulfilling their biological imperatives." Inexplicably, Mark laughed again.

"What the fuck, man," Jonah said, chuckling. "You can't go around talking about a woman's biological imperatives without being dragged off to political correctness jail. Try to be a little sensitive."

"Well, all of our women are at home cooking for tomorrow." Daniel smiled as he lifted the bottle to his mouth. "And later I'm going to join my bride in a different bit of biological imperativeness."

"TMI!" Jonah said. "I shudder to think what she sees in you. You're a male chauvinist pig."

Yup. Happy as a pig in slop, brother. My Eve is a beauty."

Mark hiccoughed again. "And she's smart."

"Can't be too smart if she married Daniel, huh?" Jonah nudged Mark's shoulder, and nearly knocked him off the stool. "Hey, little brother. When did you eat last?"

"I'm only your little brother by six minutes, and Mom fed us well before we left."

Daniel held up his left arm and squinted at his watch. "Damn, Mark. That was almost three hours ago. We need to head on home soon."

"So, what have you two been talking about?"

"A little of this and little of that," Daniel answered.

"Mostly Daniel's been talking about Eve. And Timmy, his new son. And how he screwed up his life by not landing the headmaster job up in New England."

"I did not screw up my life. And I did get the headmaster job. I turned it down."

"Like King Edward, he could not accept the position without the woman he loved by his side."

 "King Edward who?" asked Jonah.

Mark wrinkled his brow. "You know. Edward and Wallis Simpson? He gave up the throne of…of…"

 "England?" Daniel offered.

 "Yes! The throne of England."

Jonah shook his head and took another swig of beer. "I seem to remember something about that from history class."

"Surprising," said Daniel, "considering that's the year you and Kelly started dating and she was in your history class. I didn't think you would remember anything from that year."

Great. He'd just about managed to forget that Kelly was in town and now Daniel had to bring her into the conversation.

"Did they cover World War Two and that era in your GED review? I always wondered what that test was like." Mark picked up his bottle, frowned at it, and set it down again.

"The test was easy. Of course, it helps if you take it after almost finishing high school. Hey, we're the three-letter brothers."

"What do you mean?" Mark repeated the process with his beer bottle and then pushed it away. It didn't take a genius to know he'd had too much, but evidently it didn't hurt, either.

Jonah pointed first to Mark, then to himself and finally to Daniel. "PhD, GED, PhD."

Mark's mouth fell open and then he guffawed. "That's really good, Jonah." He slapped the bar top.

"I think you need to get brother home, brother." Jonah nodded his head toward Mark.

Daniel leaned over the bar and gazed at his triplet. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Like I said, I don't think Mark drinks much."

 "Kills brain cells," Mark said.

 "You're right," Daniel added.

Jonah smiled. "And neither of you two have many brain cells left to lose. You've already used up too many with your heavy, deep thinking."

"Oh, ha ha." Still, Daniel stood up and tossed a fifty onto the bar. "That should take care of our tab and a tip. You coming?"

"Nah, not yet. Mom's probably busy in the kitchen and I don't want to interrupt. You know she'd flutter around and insist on making me dinner right in the middle of everything. I'll catch something to eat here and be home soon."

"Great. Then you can meet Eve and Tim."

"Eve's smart," said Mark. His eyes were open just a tad too far, like he had to do that to focus on seeing Jonah.

"Do you need help walking to the car, Mark?"

"Oh, heck no. I can do it." He looked down. "Getting off this stool might require assistance, though."

Jonah laughed, and then stood to help Daniel steady Mark. The two made it to the door without trouble. Jonah hoped Mark would make it home without vomiting in the car. He shook his head and lifted the bottle to his mouth. Mark was going to feel like hell tomorrow for Thanksgiving dinner. He lifted his finger to signal the barkeep, who slung a towel over his shoulder and came right down.

"A burger and fries, please." Jonah had said the words, but in synch with someone else. Someone whose voice was slightly higher and a lot more feminine. He turned his head to the left and met the green gaze of the last person he wanted to see tonight. For an instant, the spit dried in his mouth and his eyes widened as his past slammed headfirst into his present. She was still the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, and his body responded with an immediate and aching erection.

Then she opened her mouth.

"Oh hell," Kelly said. "It's you."
