Getting in shape for the beach

And by “getting in shape for the beach” I mean for relaxing with a good beach read, under a big umbrella, on a lounge chair, and with a cool drink in hand. I love that I can adjust the light setting on the Kindle so I can read in most sunlight. And in I doze off under the blanket with a cool ocean breeze blowing across me, well that’s what relaxing’s all about.

Honestly, I spent nine years in Virginia Beach and didn’t enjoy the beach much. I burn easily and sand—ugh!—gets EVERYwhere. But now in land-locked Idaho, a little ocean therapy would be nice! Here’s a book that might help us think about getting in shape for those beach vibes. Hope you enjoy!

An erotic fairy tale based on, guess what… Baer and the Three Goldilocks

Susan Baer, founder of Baer Hugs, health centers for women, longs to find her special someone. Sadly, there are no prospects in sight. Suddenly, three men come into her life. All successful, all gorgeous, all blond. And posing their own unique problems. One is too rough and hard in his treatment, one is too soft and wants her to take charge. The last is…well, let's just say he's unavailable. *sigh* Can any of them turn out to be “just right?”

Excerpt:
About an hour before Susan normally broke for lunch, Toby Williams strolled into the office.

Automatically, Duncan’s eyes narrowed. He disliked Toby Williams. Strongly. At first, the feeling had been his normal reaction to arrogance. Toby had the confident swagger of a man who was both rich and good-looking, and knew it. Oh sure, the guy was attractive in a so-so way. His hair was so blond it was almost white. That alone would make him stand out in a crowd. And he seemed fit, in good enough shape to take care of himself in a fight if he had to. He supported the Italian economy with his suits and shoes, and the gold and diamond markets with the necklace, watch and pinkie ring he routinely wore.

But looks and wealth weren’t why Duncan disliked Toby Williams. No, Duncan just didn’t think all of that gave a guy an excuse to be a world-class asshole.

It didn’t help that Susan was seeing the jerk regularly, though why she went out with him Duncan would never understand. Williams treated her like shit with sly, backhanded compliments, or he ignored her presence altogether. Yet she seemed to brush off the slights.

Williams’s arrogance aside, his treatment of Susan was enough to damn him in Duncan’s eyes. He kept his opinions to himself, however, because she’d never hinted she would welcome them. He stayed wary around the bastard, just the same.

Duncan remembered the first time he met Toby, soon after he’d started working at the club. He’d greeted Toby in a professional manner, but had been virtually disregarded. When Susan introduced Toby as an old friend and Duncan held out his hand Toby took it, but with obvious reluctance, as though it were beneath him to interact with “the help.”

Then Susan and Toby had gone to lunch. When they returned, Toby had looked at Duncan with a decidedly superior sneer, but had also kept his distance, making Duncan assume Susan had told Toby about his sexual preferences. Since then, and with some glee, he found ways to make contact with Toby every time he came to the office. Simply knowing that his voice and his movements—which he exaggerated during the visits—made Toby uncomfortable, added a spot of enjoyment to Duncan’s day.

The enjoyment was always short-lived however, knowing that Susan was going out with the creep.

Like she was today.

“Hello, is there anything I can do for you?” Duncan knew why Toby was there of course, but he asked anyway, his voice low, seductive. Barely above a purr.

Duncan watched…and watched… Wait for it… There it was. The Toby Smirk, perfected, he assumed, after years of use.

"…one hilarious moment after another ... Ms. Knight deserves a pat on the back for this lovely adult bedtime story. Her idea was fresh, and her writing is witty."

"Dee S. Knight has written a sensuous, humorous story that will get the reader both laughing and panting ... This is not only a scintillating tale, but it will give the reader warm feelings and a satisfying time."

"…beyond wonderful! … was truly one of the most enjoyable stories I've read! … perfect for a quiet night at home!"

In honor of those who “…go down to the sea in ships…”

My dad was one of those people for over 24 years serving in the U.S. Navy. During that time, he has shore duty fewer than 6 years. For the rest of the time, he spent at least 8 months a year at sea as a boiler tender, working in the bowels of naval ships. I didn’t appreciate his duty as much as I should have as a child but have come to admire it more and more the older I got. Hard work, gone from home, and working in a dangerous environment. And then, there’s the military family. They have to cope without the husband/father (or wife/mother) for much of the year and then fit that person back into the family structure when they return. It’s not always easy.

Especially now when we have men and women in harm’s way around the world, my book pays homage to the work they do and the sacrifices they make. Safe journey!

Blurb:
Men and women of the armed forces experience lust and love pretty much like everyone else. Except, well, there is that uniform. And the hard-to-resist attraction of "duty, honor, service" as a man might apply them to a woman's pleasure. All things considered, romance among the military is a pretty sexy, compelling force for which you'd better be armed, whether weighing anchor and moving forward into desire, dropping anchor and staying put for passion, or setting a course for renewed love with anchor home. Explore the world of love and the military and see just how hot Naval Maneuvers can be.

Excerpt:
"And what is your name, pretty?" Mel Crandall addressed the dinosaur bones in an undertone, bending nearly to face level. The skeleton displayed an open mouth and rows of fierce, sharp teeth.

"Roger," a man standing next to her said in a low voice. Startled, she looked up. Up being the operative word. She stood a decent five feet ten inches, and he beat her by a good half foot. She studied him. He ignored her.

The guy had a solid profile, strong chin, chiseled cheekbones, and a straight back with muscular shoulders. Short brown hair. He wore glasses and stared straight ahead, but glasses couldn't disguise the laugh lines that radiated from the corners of his eyes. His posture was near perfect and he was not overweight, as evidenced by the trim fit of his jeans and red polo shirt that clung enough to give evidence of a low body/mass index number.

As a doctor, she immediately noticed body characteristics before actual looks. But with this guy, examination in lieu of admiration was hard. Men were often put off by the fact that she paid attention to whether they looked sallow or flushed, or if their hands were cold or warm before she "saw" them. She noticed if a man's eyes were dilated or glittered with fever before she registered eye color. Dates started with mini examinations before she relaxed enough to enjoy personalities, but that's just the way she was. Men had to take it or leave it. Sadly, most left it. Which was why she talked to dinosaurs at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History all on her own.

Mel moved on to the next exhibit, a shorter built specimen but still tall and with a nasty spiked tail. "I wonder what you looked like," she murmured. "What color were you, what did you eat, and what's your name?" She bent to read the exhibit information.

"Gray. Grass." That same guy had followed her. Rather than having a strong profile, she was beginning to think he was a weirdo. "Annnd, roger."

Quickly, Mel moved to the next exhibit. "And you are–"

"Roger."

He stood beside her again! Mel started to look for a museum guard but saw none. Great. Planting her hands on her hips, she turned to him. "Stop following me," she said loudly enough that people in the general area turned to see what was happening.

The guy said, "Hold it."

Hold it? Hold it, as in "Wait a minute, little lady?" She opened her mouth to lay into him when he turned and removed his glasses, showing her the richest, most chocolatey brown eyes she'd ever seen. The words stuck in her mouth.

"I'm sorry, what?"

In a lower voice she said, "You're following me from exhibit to exhibit and talking to me. I want you to stop."

"I didn't realize…" He wiggled the glasses at her. "I'm working here and I'm afraid I didn't notice you."

Well. What was worse, that he was a pervert following her place to place, or that he wasn't a perv and hadn't even noticed her?

The ‘tween time—Thanksgiving to New Year

I love this time of year, where every street shines and every TV commercial sparkles and shimmers. Christmas tree lights twinkle and the eyes of children widen and gleam with anticipation.

And then, on January 2, it seems to all go away at once. Whoosh! No more lights, no more sparkle. Snow turns brown and there’re long, dark days ahead before the next bright, fun time—for some, Memorial Day in May. Sigh.

So lucky for me, this book takes place in that bright time of year…

The Goodman series, Book Two: One Woman Only

Blurb:
As one of a set of triplets, Jonah Goodman has always stood out as the least academic—and the last one to take the world, or commitment, seriously. Thing is, that’s not really who he is. But who can he convince of that? Not his family, who see him as they always have. And maybe not his one love, the sweetheart he left behind in high school but with whom he is now sharing an erotic holiday. Will he get his second chance to prove to Kelly that he is a loving man who wants more than a sensual few days, but a real relationship with the woman he lost once and doesn’t want to lose again? With that chance and Kelly's love, Jonah knows that a "good man" can become even better.

Excerpt:
Jonah pulled in the driveway behind Daniel's old Volvo. Man, that thing had seen better days, but Daniel seemed to love it. At least with Daniel living close, Jonah could help keep the thing in tune and running.

"Speak of the devil," Jonah said, as Daniel exited the house with his son, Timmy.

"Jonah!" Timmy screamed his name and came running for him. Jonah scooped the boy into his arms, laughing.

"What has you so excited, huh?"

The boy’s dark eyes sparkled and his mouth held a wide smile. "My dad got the job you told him about and the school is really cool and we're going up next week to look for a new house for all of us and I might even get a dog."

"A dog? Wow! No wonder you're so excited."

"I know. And right now, we're going to get ice cream for dessert because gramma is making supper and she said she wanted some ice cream. What kind do you like, Jonah?"

 "Vanilla for me."

Timmy scrunched his face into a scowl. “Vanilla?"

"Well, with lots of chocolate sauce on it."

The boy smiled again. "That's okay, then." Then he twisted to throw a disparaging look at Ginger. "Except Dad says your heap is in the way. What's a heap? I thought you drove a car."

Jonah looked to Daniel who stood laughing softly at Tim's rant. He raised his brows and said meaningfully, "I don't drive a car, Tim. I drive a classic, original 1965 GTO. It's very special. Her name is Ginger. Wanna go for ice cream in Ginger?"

Tim twisted toward Daniel so fast, Jonah almost dropped him. "Can we Dad? Can we take Ginger?"

With a wry smile, Daniel took Tim from Jonah. "Not this time. We have your car seat in our car. But later we can go out if your Uncle Jonah says it's okay."

If possible, Tim's eyes grew even larger. "You're my uncle? I've never had an uncle before."

"Now you have two of them. Me and Mark. Remember Mark from the wedding?"

"Is that the man who kept talking about math and stuff?" Tim asked Daniel.

"That’s him." Daniel held out his hand to shake and Jonah took it firmly. "What brings you home this weekend?"

"Wanted to see Mom and Dad now that all the hoopla is over. Zeb said to tell you hi and that he'll be up with me for Christmas to meet everybody."

"It'll be good to see him."

"So I guess congratulations are due for the new job? When do you start? I thought you had to finish the year up in New Hampshire."

Timmy squirmed to get down, so Daniel set him on his feet. "Don't go near the street."

"Okay, Dad," Tim shouted as he took off across the front yard, arms spread wide like an airplane.

"It seems that while we were here over Thanksgiving, the headmaster filled my spot. They don't acknowledge that Eve and I created a scandal, and they aren't accusing us of creating a scandal—"

"But they want any possible scandal gone far, far away."

"You got it." Daniel shrugged. "Once I spoke with the president of the school down here, I was ready to make the move. We went down to Asheville to meet her and look over the campus the day after we got back, and they offered me the job later that afternoon. We're ready to start our new lives. I have enough money to tide us over, and it’s only a few weeks before I start in Asheville, in the new year."

"Asheville is a good place to live. I'm glad things are working out for you."

"Eve and I will be going after the weekend to find a temporary place to live while we look for a house, and to get Tim enrolled in school. Then we'll be there, getting used to the town and getting a feel for the school."

"You'll do great, Daniel. They're lucky to have you."

"Thanks." Daniel stole a glance over Jonah's left shoulder. "Looks like you might be lucky, too."

Jonah turned to see what Daniel was talking about, just in time to see Kelly's RAV4 turn the corner. His heart rate skipped with that little bit of contact. Damn it. She didn’t even see him. Didn't wave or honk the horn. And still his heart knew her. And wanted her.

Just like other parts of his anatomy.

“This story truly had me hooked from the first page, and I'm very much enjoying my time with the Goodman brothers!"

"I loved this beautifully written second chance romance.”

 "A great read. Five stars!”

What lucky woman has 3 men to choose from?

I have mixed feelings about the tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I mean she broke into their house and just settled in however she wanted. She ate their food and then messed up their beds. She was an entitled little girl with no manners. But my story of Baer and the Three Goldilocks is a whole different story. One woman, three men. Yippee-ki-yay!

Blurb:
Susan Baer, founder of Baer Hugs, health centers for women, longs to find her special someone. Sadly, there are no prospects in sight. Suddenly, three men come into her life. All successful, all gorgeous, all blond. And posing their own unique problems. One is too rough and hard in his treatment, one is too soft and wants her to take charge. Excerpt:
Susan came into her office at breakneck speed, talking the whole way. “I know it’s after two and I’ve taken a longer lunch than anyone has a right to.” She threw her purse in the bottom drawer of her desk. With barely time for a breath, she spun around and slammed into Duncan’s broad, solid chest.

He grasped her shoulders to steady her. She stepped back and he dropped his hands.

“Oh! Sorry! I didn’t mean to blow through like a tornado.” Taking a deeper breath, she smoothed the French twist she’d pulled her hair into that morning, then did the same to her skirt. She hoped she didn’t look as flustered as she felt. Gesturing to the guest chair, she said, “Sit. Tell me what’s going on.”

Duncan looked at her for a few long seconds before laying her phone messages on the desk. “Did you have a good lunch?” It was quietly said, and with little inflection. So why did she get the impression he meant more than his words’ literal meaning?

“It was fine, thanks. We drove down towards Williamsburg. How was yours?” Absently, she shuffled through the call slips. Nothing important jumped out at her.

“It was good. The girls and I talked about you.”

Her head snapped up. “Me? What about me?”

He lifted one shoulder in a shrug. “Curiosity.” Narrowing his eyes, he leaned forward slightly. “Why you’d want to go out with that jerk, mostly.” He paused, and when she didn’t respond he leaned back.

“We talked out of concern, not idle gossip. You know he’s made a pass at most everyone who works here.” His mouth hitched into a smile. “Except me, of course.”

That caused her to return his smile. “No, Toby has been pretty clear on that score.”

Duncan held out his hand, casually examining his nails. “You know, it’s been my experience that men who protest as much as he does sometimes have something to hide. Do you know for certain that he’s not more on my team than yours?”

She laughed. “Pretty sure.”

He put his hand down and looked intently at her. “But not certain?”

“Why does it matter to you?” She left a hint of a smile on her face. Was he fishing to find out if she and Toby had had sex? Her heart fluttered a little at the possibility that he wondered.

“Because I care for you. I’m your friend and I hate to see you waste yourself on someone like him. Why do you see him, Susan?”

Friends. Oh. She said nothing. The reasons she dated Toby were rooted so far in the past she wasn’t sure she could explain them in a few quick sentences. And she certainly didn’t want to explain them to Duncan. Her feelings for him were too complicated as it was without adding Toby into the mix.

“Susan, why?”

“Toby and I have known each other a long time. You see him at his worst. He does have good qualities.”

If Duncan had worn glasses, he’d have been staring over them in abject denial, giving her a “Yeah, right” look.

She shrugged in acknowledgement. “I know it might not be obvious, but he does. My relationship with Toby is a long story, and one that’s none of your business, Duncan.”

As though a mask dropped over his face, his expression became impassive. He pushed out of the chair. “You’re right. I’m not going to apologize for worrying about you, though. Meetings are scheduled in Lexington for all day Monday, and our reservations are confirmed for Sunday and Monday nights.” He pointed to the call slips on her desk. “It’s been quiet and that’s all you have to take care of.”

He stopped on his way out the door when she called his name.

“I appreciate the worry, but it’s all right, really.”

Shrugging, he exited, closing the door behind him.

Which left her alone to wonder to herself why she went out with Toby Williams. It was more, she hoped, than proving to Toby that she was different from the overweight girl who’d had a crush on him for three years of high school. She was certain that was how it had started.

“The question is, how did it get to where it is now?” Propping her head in her hands, she considered her situation.

Quite by accident, she’d met Toby about four weeks ago at a business function. She’d scanned the crowd and noticed a distinctive looking, tall tow-head with light blue eyes. Those eyes had met hers across the room and she’d known without doubt who he was, even after sixteen years. By the questioning look he’d given her, she guessed he was confused—as though she was someone he should know, but couldn’t place. That made her smile. And her smile practically guaranteed that he would make his way to her. Which he had, in short order.

In the four weeks since, they’d seen each other only five or six times. It had started well but reflecting on it now, she realized his attitude had worsened with each meeting. While his hands and lips had grown bolder, so had his words. Not in blatant verbal attacks but in snipes and subtle hints regarding her dress, her work, her opinions. None was very noticeable individually. But taken together, as she thought of them now, each abusive comment had worked to make her revert from who she was now, to acting like the shy, embarrassed girl she had been years ago. Wanting to capture his attention, wanting so much to belong.
