Writing: Trying a New Genre Part 2

Well, it's not that easy to write non-romance after writing romance for years. LOL

However, I'm not one to give up so easily.

Instead of focusing on a couple who will end up together at the end of the story only after conflicts that keep them apart, I must focus on suspense, action, and witty dialogue. I'm thinking about something similar to The Avengers and how those characters interact while trying to save the world. There's comedy woven into darkness and plenty of thrills. Joss Whedon is a master at all of those storytelling components. He also did this extremely well with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

It's not too much of a hair-pulling experience though, maybe because my romances leaned toward being plot-driven.

So far, I have a rough draft that is starting to take shape, and I'm leaning toward a bit of a psychological thriller by utilizing the unreliable narrative tool. I like the challenge of telling this story through the eyes of a jaded old vampire who is an unlikely hero.

I don't like to give away too much when I'm creating a story, but I will divulge that the videos and images of the recent Los Angeles anti-ICE protests and riots are helping with my research.

Here's a tentative first line: There are predators, and there are prey.

Escape to a world of enchantment and passion.

I like your first line, Kelley. Very provocative. :)

I get what a challenge it is to change genres. But I know you'll do great at this!
