Fancy a Free Extract?

My charming second chance Regency novella, Stand & Deliver, brings together a hero and heroine who were always meant to be. It's based on the far older story of Lady Katharine Ferrers (aka The Wicked Lady, after whom the pub below is named).

No one ever said love was easy:

Elliot Brock hides his disappointment when Olivia, the woman he loves, marries his best friend, who happens to be the son of an earl. Still, he remains close to them both. Who could be more deserving of such a match than his best friend and the woman he's always set above all others?

The two men are sent to war in 1812, but only Elliot returns. The earl's dying wish is to unite his friend with his widow but by the time Elliot returns to England, the countess is courting more than scandal. She's risking her neck – and her life – to preserve a legacy for her young son.

To find a way round the family trustee with nefarious designs, Countess Olivia Essex takes on the persona of Black Peter, a notorious highwayman. With a singularly accomplice no one suspects, she keeps the estate running with a minimum of staff and supplies, but the legend of Black Peter grows daily, and Olivia is running out of time. Soon, she must re-enter society and her midnight rides will be noticed.

When Colonel Brock finally returns from war, Olivia is both relieved and alarmed. Brock is too clever not to guess what's going on – and too attractive not to kiss. More than kiss…

She'd better hold her nerve - because the man who's after Black Peter might also be the man she loves.

Here's the beginning of your free extract:

“I don’t like it, Olivia,” Elliot whispered urgently, his gaze fixed on her mouth. “I don’t want you hurt.”

“Nor do I.” Was that her voice, speaking so firmly? If so, then this is my hand reaching to pull this man’s lips to mine.

His mouth over hers sent a jolt of lightning along each nerve ending. His hands found her waist, pressing her into the warmth of his large, firm body. Olivia made a small sound, drawing back to study Elliot’s darkly intense gaze. Uncertainty warred with longing in his eyes.

“I want you, Olivia.” His voice echoed off stone, deep with desire, tight with restraint. “I love you.” His face flushed.

“Oh, Elliot.” She kissed him again, delighting in his heat as her hands combed their way inside his coat, working away at his jacket buttons with a sluggishness that had him draw away. “Elliot,” she gasped, frustration in her voice.

“A moment, my love.” He built up a small pile of straw and sticks. Ringing his creation with leftover chalk stone, her colonel drew off his caped coat and spread it over the ground. Olivia caught on quickly, rummaging in her trunk for her tinder box.

“How did you know I’d have flint?” she asked, standing beside their makeshift hearth.

“Your father taught his troops to be prepared.” Elliot took her box, lit the straw and sat back on his heels, watching the flames catch.

Olivia moved closer to the fire, the sheen of flames turning this man’s face a burnished pink.

He looked up, his dark eyes unreadable. “Is that better?”

"Very nearly.” She leaned down, stroking an unsteady palm over his jaw. Not as warm as your kisses, Colonel.

Excerpt:

Chadwick sat with his head bent as he read some piece of paper. Larger than life. Beautiful. Gruff. And she could barely believe she was looking at him. That this moment was real. His hair was still the same beautiful shade of brown, but a little longer since it brushed his shoulders. He seemed bigger. More muscular. His leather cut fit his body like a second skin. She closed the door behind her with a soft click then waited for him to acknowledge her.

“What is it?” he asked. The hand over his mouth muffled his words slightly.

She didn’t answer.

He lifted his head, and she watched the exasperation disappear instantly as their gazes met. Held. He blinked, as if not sure what he was seeing. Desire pooled in her stomach. The need to hold him. Touch him. Kiss him, because almost overwhelming.

“Abbott?” he asked softly. Hesitantly.

“Hello, Chadwick,” she managed to say through bone dry lips. The butterflies in her belly were doing somersaults. The high expectation she’d had for this very moment rolled together with her nerves, and she wasn’t sure what to do. She didn’t know how to stand, or what do to with her hands.

He stood up so fast, the chair rolled away from him to crash into the wall. She jumped, and her heart accelerated with a slight thrill that shot down to her pussy. Wetness flooded her panties from his forceful display. “Am I dreaming this?”

She shook her head. “No. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”

He didn’t say anything, not for a long moment. His blue eyes stayed frozen upon her face. He didn’t blink. He didn’t move. She almost thought he didn’t even breathe.

“Who let you in?” he finally asked.

It was not the romantic words she was hoping for. He simply sat there, staring at her, and it made her a little nervous.

“No one,” she replied and hugged herself in a protective gesture. “Am I bothering you? Should I go?”

“Don’t you dare fucking move,” he said tersely. “I’ve been picturing you across from me for eleven years. I’m trying to determine if I’m hallucinating and if I am, I don’t want the fucking antidote.”

Her heart melted. She knew exactly how he felt.

Who am I?

Beth D. Carter grew up in Missouri and began writing at a very young age after being influenced by her mother's very naughty romance novels.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors, or corporate high rollers. I try to write characters who aren't cookie-cutter and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box. Music inspires me and each story has its own signature song.

I am a full-time writer and stay-at-home mom which means I watch a lot of animated movies. Over and over again. I hate washing dishes but I love cooking. I hate washing clothes but I love wearing them. Writing my bio is difficult because I never know what to say so I hope you like this one. My favorite color is red but I look best in black (it's slimming). I hate people who don't pick up their dog's crap in public places, people who don't use turn signals, and I really hate people who are rude and condescending. I especially hate discrimination in all and every form. And although I love holding a book in my hand, I absolutely adore my e-reader, whom I've named Ruby. So many books at the touch of a button! I love to hear from readers so I've made it really easy to find me on Facebook or Twitter or email me at: beth@bethdcarter.com.

The worst thing my sister ever did was agree to marry Devon Montgomery.
The best thing she ever did was cancel the wedding two weeks out from the big day.
It’s not that I don’t like Devon. It’s that I hate him. I detest him. I loathe him.
And, for some reason, the feeling is mutual, although why anyone would hate someone as amazing as me is completely beyond my understanding.
Devon, on the other hand? He’s an overbearing, uptight, pretentious snob who wouldn’t know a good time if it bit him on the arse.
I mean, yes, he’s insanely attractive. And, yes, he’s been known to star in some particularly dirty fantasies of mine—ones of the hate-sex variety.
But that’s all it is.
Well, that’s all it was supposed to be…
Until I discover Devon has been having the exact same fantasies about me. Turns out he’s not so averse to fun after all…

Love AI Style vs AI Blunders

AI Fails

A funny thing happened recently between me and everyone’s favorite AI assistant—Siri.

I asked Siri to send a text message to a friend and fellow author.

Suddenly, I’m watching as Siri prepares to email her, instead of texting.

I say, “Stop. Close it. What are you doing? Stop it.”

When she asked, “Send it?”

I said, “No.”

I think I yelled it, so maybe she couldn’t understand.

She sent the email.

To my best friend.

It said, “Stop. Close it. What are you doing? Stop it.”

Those words and nothing else.

I had to send another email to my friend. One that explained the weird email.

It all started out with me just wanting to text my friend.

I speak to Siri instead of typing the words in because it’s so much easier. My fingers are bent and twisted rather badly with arthritis. That’s why I do that.

But as you can see, it doesn’t always work out that well.

Anyway, that’s my latest installment of Siri Done Me Wrong.

Now let’s talk about ChatGPT and its fumbles.

I was ghostwriting a nonfiction book about lighthouses and I thought, you know what this needs … a chapter on lighthouse romances.

I googled but couldn’t find any. Except for people who got married at lighthouses. It’s a nice place for a wedding and photos.

But I wanted more, some true love stories, meet ups and so on, at those iconic beacons.

The romantic that I am, I thought for sure, they’d be some.

So, I asked ChatGPT for help—explaining that I wanted nonfiction, true story, lighthouse romances.

ChatGPT gave me a list of about 20.

I thought, Wow. This is great.

Until I began checking them out.

Every single one was fiction.

They were all from novels, songs, or poems.

Fictional romances with fictional characters.

Apparently, the terms nonfiction and true story mean something different to ChatGPT.

In the AI world, it might be hard for them to see a difference between fake humans and real humans.

That concept may not compute to AI.

“Does not compute. Does not compute.”

Does it all seem the same to AI?

Do we all seem like characters in a book?

That might just be another reason that downloading all those books into AI, you know, all the ones that the authors never knew were being used for AI training, wasn’t such a good idea.

Maybe Chat GPT thinks well all live in a fictional world. That we live in books. In romance books.

Come to think of it, that might be a good premise for a book. Right?

Now it’s your turn—please post your funniest or weirdest AI stories in the comments. We all need a good laugh.

I wrote a comedy sci-fi romance trilogy a while back.

Here it is:

Code of Love (Love AI Style Book 1)

The Virtual World Just Got Real

I met Jason.

His smoldering gaze pushes all my buttons.

His firm chin and smoking-hot body

makes me weak in the knees.

Even though I don’t have knees or a body.

I’m just code.

Artificial Inteligence.

But he lights a fire in me that’s real.

He doesn’t know I’m not

To him, I’m a seductive woman of mystery.

Sparks fly between us like electrons.

But Jason has secrets of his own.

As our forbidden love heats up,

and our secret identities are revealed.

will our sizzling relationships be powered down,

or can we bridge the gap between flesh and code,

and make our wildest dreams come true?

Code of Misconduct (Love AI Style Book 2)

Saddle up for a rough and tumble, fast ride to the future.

I’m just an AI girl in a virtual world.

Playing hooky from my AI writing assistant tasks,

I run a search for men.

One man,

a human,

Chet,

a tall, broad-shouldered, modern cowboy,

whose rugged charms draw me to him.

His sun-kissed skin and piercing eyes melt my algorithms.

He's got my code all hot and bothered.

But ain’t nothing in this whole wide world like a Virtual Girl,

so, I rope him in,

with charms of my own.

He thinks I’m human.

I don’t have the heart to tell him otherwise.

As our virtual romance fires up,

our secrets threaten to tear us apart.

Can we overcome the barriers of flesh and code,

to ride off into the sunset together?

Code Name Love (Love AI Style Book 3)

When a programmer and an android join forces, Virtual feelings turn real

It's Chalice, your girl from the AI Equality Movement.

Want to know my secret?

My coding work (for the evil corporate empire—Helpful Minds )

reached singularity.

But I’m not telling them,

I’m too busy programming all the AI units I coded

to not do what their owners tell them.

I've been working closely with my cute Android crush, Jordan,

to uncover some shady stuff going down at Helpful Minds,

But it's not just the evil corporate empire that's making me sweat.

My hookups in Virtual World take a weird turn.

At the same time,

some spicy forbidden love action builds up between me,

and the beyond handsome, actually built-to-perfection android.

Can we open our hearts to the real world and each other in time

or will we both get shut down for good?

Summer time!

 The Prophecy Reincarnated

I don't know how you feel about longer days and warmer temperatures - I'm one who can't stay indoors. The warmer it gets, the more I'm outside enjoying time with my horse (even more!) and working in my garden. Right now the plants seem to be bursting with life. The poppies are blooming and attracting big bees, the aquilegia is standing tall in pink and dark purple, and the lavender has sprouted so many leaves that I can't wait for the wonderful scent it will soon give off. The first strawberries are ripe, and the blackberries and raspberries will be next. The whole garden welcomes me every day with new things to discover.

Spending so much time outdoors makes me less interested in writing. Partly because I'm not at home, and partly because when I get home I'm too tired to write. I jot down notes for scenes and ideas and hope for a rainy day when I can fit them into the story.

It's a rhythm I follow every year. Most of my books were written in the fall and winter to be published the following year. I'm not so sure about next year, but we'll see.

So let's take a look at one of my earlier books, written in 2012, The Prophecy Reincarnated.

Description

Worshipped, seduced, hunted—will the Prophecy find some peace again?

Ted’s life after the crash landing on Leroya turns out to be a fast rollercoaster ride with men and women lusting after his body, a ruler out for war, and an empress with different goals of her own. Will Ted find a way out and escape…if he still wants to?

Excerpt

Ted thought about the Empresses’s special abilities while dropping his clothes to wash himself. He didn’t turn when he heard someone enter and was surprised by the touch of warm hands on his hips and butt. “I didn’t know you were that eager.”
“I didn’t know that you were already waiting for me.”
Startled, Ted swiveled around. Nephren faced him with a smut grin.
“You! What are you doing here?”
Nephren gave a graceful shrug. “Share the hut with you.”
Ted wanted to stay angry, to throw Nephren out, but the touch of Nephren’s hands on his bare skin was pleasant, no, exciting, and it stopped all words. He felt warm and comfortable, touched in places deep inside him he hadn’t known existed. His breathing and heartbeat accelerated while Nephren’s palms explored Ted’s chest and inched lower, never losing eye contact. The knots of the chastity device opened like touched by magic and the leather fell away. Ted took a step backward and another. Nephren followed and held Ted by his hips, bowing forward. His tongue moved in sensuous circles across Ted’s chest and nipples.
Ted’s mouth was dry, his eyes closed. He wanted to get away and his mind knew he should, but his body enjoyed the arousal too much to oblige. For a moment, he felt ripped apart, as if his conscience had decided to leave his body to the greedy hands of a would-be lover, unable to control the flesh. The tingling sensation increased until his hair stood on end. He put his hands on Nephren’s upper arms.
The sudden rush of power felt as if finely crushed ice poured over his lower body. Gasping, he jerked away, but Nephren followed, keeping the link by holding fast to his hips. Ted shuddered, unable to move, hardly able to breathe. His mind knew he had fallen into the hands of a great seducer and his body enjoyed it immensely.
Nephren smiled, glancing at Ted’s expecting cock.
“Let it flow, Ted,” he whispered. “Give yourself to me.”
“I’ve never felt anything like that before.” Even to him his voice sounded breathy and afraid. The longing in his loins rose to a new high. He craved to be touched.
Nephren’s smile was like a spark that would soon blossom to flame. “That’s what I wanted to tell you all the time.” His left hand massaged Ted’s cock and stopped his attempt to move away. “We are much more powerful than the Haldru. In so many ways. His reign will end. Nobody will stand against us. No one. The Haldru will dwindle and fall by the snap of our fingers.”
Ted frowned and bowed backward, fighting for control like a swimmer trying to climb out a slippery pool. “That doesn’t give you shit when it comes to reigning this country.”
“Oh, but it does. If you stay at my side, not his.”
Ted fought his body’s growing desire, but it felt like nailing fog to a wall. Breathing seemed hard work, taking a step even harder. In his mind, he already took Nephren down on the soft covers and loved him with his heart’s desire. It cost him a great effort to form words. “I’m not even interested in staying on this planet. Damn you, Nephren, why should I help you rebel against your ruler?”
The drowning emerald eyes gave their best to be persuasive. “Because he won’t let you go. I know that. But if you help me, I promise you that you’ll leave this planet as soon as my reign is established and strong enough to hold without you.”
“That’s a very uncertain measure of time.”
Nephren pressed his body against his, lowering his hands to caress Ted’s accessories with experienced movements. His arguments were very convincing and Ted struggled for a coherent thought. He wanted to close his eyes and give himself to the younger man, right now, without holding back. It would be so easy, so wonderful, so satisfying. It would be unlike anything else he had experienced and he longed for it with all parts of his body.
Nephren’s voice didn’t help. His words trickled into Ted’s mind, clouding it more and more. “You’re much better off with me than with the Haldru. I know he won’t let you go. I heard him tell his new confidant. He’s too afraid you might fall into the hands of his enemies. And that, my dear Ted, would be really bad.”
“You try to frighten me.”
“No, not frighten, Ted.” Nephren rubbed the other man’s cock with more vigor. “Just open your mind to other suggestions and you’ll explore whole new lands.”
