It's the month for weddings!

Intro:
I guess I can see why so many women want to marry in June. Flowers are in bloom, the weather isn’t so very hot, and there are perhaps fewer showers, so outdoor venues are available without too many worries. I’ve never considered it myself. And in fact, I was never one of those little girls who dreamed of her wedding. I didn’t pore over bridal magazines or dream of my dress. Didn’t imagine the church or the bridesmaids, or the honeymoon. I just wanted the best groom in the world and figured everything else would fall into place. And that’s pretty much what happened! Here’s a story with one groom—but two husbands. Funny how that happened!

For the month for weddings, here’s Siobhan, from the Sisters O’Ryan series.

Blurb:

In 1875, Siobhan O'Ryan marries Micah, one of Boston's Berwick twins. Micah has charm, good looks, a nice nature and money. Lots of money. Siobhan has seen two of her sisters suffer because one married for love and the other let their father select her husband. Siobhan will stake her future on her own practicality. Choosing Micah means she will be the belle of Boston.

Micah hates destroying Siobhan's dreams by telling her they must move to San Francisco, but it's that or be disinherited. Surprisingly, he falls in love with his new wife along the way and then discovers that his twin loves her too. Even more surprising is when Siobhan reveals that she would enjoy having both men in her bed. Just when they think nothing can destroy their freedom and happiness in wild California, visitors arrive from straight-laced Boston that threaten everything.

Excerpt:
“This necklace, I think, Ching Li,” she said, pointing to a simple gold chain with a ruby cabochon suspended from it. Smaller rubies dangled from her ears and encircled her wrist. Mai had outdone herself with the gown, a high-waisted design of black silk. Lace interwoven with slivers of cut glass covered the bodice and capped sleeves, making them sparkle in the candlelight. A sheath of black silk fell to the floor without further adornment.

Examining herself in the mirror, she smiled in approval. Serious Andrew would appreciate simplicity, whereas she would have worn color and a style with flair for Micah. The accountant and the artist. In some ways they were different as night and day. In others, they were as though one man, one soul.

“That’s perfect. Thank you. There’s no need to wait up tonight.”

Ching Li bowed. “Yes, Missy.”

Siobhan retrieved an envelope from a drawer in her dressing table and then stood. “And please do not wake me at the usual time tomorrow. I have no appointments until after noon. But you may take this contract to your friend. Like Mai, she’s a real talent. I think she will be a fine second seamstress.”

“Thank you. She will be very happy.” With another bow, Ching Li left the room.

“Time to face the lion,” she said out loud.

She walked down the stairs thinking Andrew might meet her at the foot.

“He hasn't come down yet, ma’am.” Martin, the butler, stood in the entrance hall with her wrap in hand.

“Thank you, Martin. Would you be a dear and run up and tell him we will be late if he doesn’t hurry?”

“No need. Here I am.” Andrew came down the steps tightening his tie.

“Here, let me do that,” she said, when he came to a stop beside her. She reached up and straightened it, an intimate gesture not wasted on either of them.

She allowed Martin to help her with her wrap, and they descended the outside steps to the waiting carriage.

“Have you ever seen Carmen?” Andrew asked as they bumped over the streets.

“No, have you?”

“Once, in New York. I went with Mother while Micah went off to a museum.”

“You two are very unalike in some ways.”

“I suppose we are. Yet even in our differences we shared with each other. When he was really entranced, truly concentrating on a subject for a drawing, I always knew what it was—the shape and color of it—before he told me.”

“That’s amazing.”

“Conversely, when I struggled with a math problem, he discerned enough to help talk me through it.”

She stared out at the passing street scene, musing. “That must be strange, having someone know your mind almost as well as you do. I have three sisters and they’ve never come close to knowing who I am or what I want.”

“And what is that, Siobhan?” He said it softly.

She faced him squarely. “Security. I want to be safely secure, yet in control of my life.”

“Did you think marrying a Berwick would do that?”

“Yes.” He quirked his head. A flash of streetlight showed the interest in his eyes. She said, “One sister ran off and married for what she thought was love. The emotion didn’t keep him alive or give her money to live well. My next sister accepted my father’s wise decision of an older, wealthy man. He’d be steady, Father assured Anya. The filthy, old man cornered me in a closet and tried for a kiss before they’d been married three days. So in the examples of my two sisters, I discovered that love doesn’t last and steadfastness can be faked. I prefer to live a good life in good style, but control my heart and mind, thank you.”

“Did you tell her?”

He didn’t need to elaborate. She knew what he meant. “I should have, I suppose.” She frowned and bit her bottom lip. “But there could be no annulment and they were leaving the next day for Atlanta. How could I make her unhappy in her choice before she had a chance to assert herself as a wife?”

He seemed amused at her rationalization. “And is she happy?”

No, she didn’t think so, not if a letter they’d received before she left for New York was any indication. She lifted one shoulder in question. “Who knows what happiness is?”

The carriage slowed. “Oh, look! We’re here.” She couldn't keep excitement from her voice.

Andrew jumped out when they stopped and helped her down. After dismissing the carriage and making arrangements for when the driver should return, he offered his arm.

He’d dressed in a tuxedo for the wedding. But since then, she hadn’t seen Micah or Andrew in anything other than suit and tie for dinner. She didn’t believe in formal wear for family meals, but seeing Andrew now, in proper black tie, could change her mind.

His jacket and trousers were as black as his hair. His blue eyes blazed from under long, charcoal lashes. His shoulders appeared broad as the Bay, tucked into his jacket. She imagined two Adonises like this on each side of the dining table. She would never tire of the sight.

They took their box seats just before the lights dimmed. Another couple shared the box with them, and hasty introductions were made. Then Siobhan found herself lost in the performance.

A little about me:
A few years ago, Dee S. Knight began writing, making getting up in the morning fun. During the day, her characters killed people, fell in love, became drunk with power, or sober with responsibility. And they had sex, lots of sex.

After a while, Dee split her personality into thirds. She writes as Anne Krist for sweeter romances, and Jenna Stewart for ménage and shifter stories. All three of her personas are found on the Nomad Authors website. And all three offer some of the best romance you can find! “Christ, I’m tired.” Meela Durning stretched and cracked her back. She shook her head, then closed her laptop. She hadn’t spoken to anyone in particular. There wasn’t anyone there to hear her. Just as well. When she’d had someone there to listen, he hadn’t listened. Hadn’t wanted to be there, either.

She’d grown used to being alone.

Tonight, she didn’t want to be by herself. It wasn’t like she could poof a man into existence. She’d wanted to try that for ages, but with no magical abilities, a spell was out of the question. She supposed she could summon one, but that only worked in her dreams and she swore it had nothing to do with magic. Just her overly active imagination.

She shrugged, then stretched her legs before standing. The man of her dreams might only be in said dreams, but that didn’t matter. He couldn’t let her down that way. Didn’t have faults. He wanted to be there. Wanted to please her. Wanted to be with her.

Unlike her ex -- the rotten troll.

She sighed and pushed in her chair. She didn’t even have a fish. She’d wanted a cat, but the building manager didn’t permit animals that had fur. Ridiculous rules.

She checked that the apartment door was locked, then picked up her phone before switching off the lights. She padded into the bedroom. Once she tossed the phone onto the bed, she made her way into the bathroom. She stripped out of her shirt, and bra, then her jeans and panties, returning to the bedroom long enough to don her sleep shirt. She brushed her teeth, but her thoughts turned to the man of her dreams.

She paused, mid-brushing. Man of her dreams. That sounded so silly. The only time he’d ever appeared physically, she’d been asleep.

A vision of him formed in her mind. Tall, muscled, but not huge… thick dark-blond hair with just a bit of shag to it. Enough to remind her of a superhero, with his hair blowing in the breeze. Twinkling green eyes, a wicked smile that hinted at mischief, but he’d been a gentleman. A dusting of hair from his navel to below the belt.

She’d never seen his cock, but she’d felt it. Heat washed over her. She swore she’d felt his hands on her body, the way he’d touched her and kissed every inch of her. He took care of her. Treated her like a treasure. Like she had worth.

She knew damn well she had value. It’d taken her years to figure that out, but now that she knew, she wasn’t about to let anyone tell her otherwise. She refused to be a doormat again.

Give Yourself a Tip

For the last month or so I’ve been having trouble getting motivated. I was doing well for a few a while. I managed to write twenty-four thousand words into a new story, brainstorming new ideas, and starting to get exciting about writing again. Then a month-long bout of illness hit my household, just one right after the other, and since then I’ve been feeling like I can’t quite get my feet underneath me. I want to get back to working on my goals again, but being so far behind already, it's hard to get the motivation to start grinding again. Even simple stuff like making dinner or cleaning the house can feel insurmountable somedays.

I’ve talked multiple times before about how I’m not good at giving myself rewards. I never seem to be able to find anything that can motivate me. I just don’t have a lot of things I want. Especially not little things. Earning books has worked okay for me, I can always use more books, but anything else has failed to be appealing enough to motivate me. And now that I have a toddler, my options for 'gifting' myself things are even fewer. I don’t have the time to get a manicure or pedicure, or take a workout class anymore, even if I was interested in doing something like that.

I decided to try something different this month. Since Covid,  everywhere now seems to be asking for tips. Everyone wants a little something extra when they do a good job. Why not me?

I set up a new system where I get a dollar every time I go above and beyond in my own life. Or at least above and beyond what I have been doing. If I can get to bed on time and get a good night sleep, instead of staying up late into the night scrolling social media, one dollar. Make a good healthy meal for my family, one dollar. Organize an activity to keep my toddler happy and give me a break, one dollar. Anything else I want to encourage myself to do constantly, I give myself a tip when I accomplish it.

I take all these little tips and put them in a special bank account. The start of a savings account to do something really fun. Right now, I’ve unofficially earmarked this money for taking my son to Disney World in a few years, but we’ll see how quickly it grows, and if we’ll have enough funds for that when the time comes.

You might notice none of these activities are directly related to helping me meet my goals, but indirectly they have been very helpful to get me back on track. Now that I’m getting better sleep and eating better, I have more mental bandwidth to start thinking about writing again. Now that I’m feeling better about where I am, and what progress I am making, I’m more able to conquer that massive cleaning projects on my plate or dealing with another terrible night of illness.

So if you’re struggling to complete what you need to do, think about giving yourself a tip for taking those critical first steps towards your goals. It's amazing what a little encouragement can do for your state of mind. And you can also be saving to some special future fun at the same time.

What would you give yourself a tip for doing? Is there anything you can think of that would be worth encouraging with a nice fat tip?

Shifters in the wild woods #PNR #shifters #shifterromance #paranormalromance

I live in beautiful Virginia, near rushing rivers and forests full of streams and lovely, old trees. The beauty I see in nature has served as the inspiration for much of my work.

The town of Great Oaks, where the majority of steamy, paranormal Stranger Creatures series takes place, was once an abandoned former factory town near Roanoke, Virginia. Shape shifters were attracted to the wild, beautiful forests and streams that run through Great Oaks, so the town is in the process of being rebuilt and revived in a way that protects and preserves the land as much as possible. Wolf’s Challenge (Stranger Creatures book 1) is Derricks and Sydney’s story. – When Derrick, a powerful wolf shifter, dares shy, single mom Sydney to take a chance with him, will she rise to the challenge or will she run for safety, leaving him in the dust?

I ended up creating the Haven Forest Resort series because I had two characters from the Stranger Creatures series, brothers AJ and Greg Shepherd, who needed their own stories. Each book in both of my series features a different couple in their fight for a happily-ever-after.

In Bear’s Dream, (Haven Forest Resort book 1), AJ and Greg are pursuing their dream of opening up a shifter resort. Ellie Ortiz wants nothing to do with AJ until a chance encounter on New Years Eve reveals he's not the heartless man she once thought. After a new job puts her in contact with him every day, the sparks between them threaten to catch fire. When Ellie ends up in danger, she and AJ must work together to survive.

What I’m working on now:

I’ve been busy writing steamy, paranormal romance, Hawk’s Heart. This will be Jordan and Luke’s story, and the very last book in my Stranger Creatures series. I’ve also been working on a couple of romantasy novellas featuring women in their forties navigating unexpected new paths in life, as well as writing more poetry and learning how to write flash fiction.

Hit the Beach!

Warm weather is finally here and outdoor activities have returned, including leisure time by the water. Just in time for you to load up your e-reader for that trip to the pool, here’s one of my summer short reads from Extasy Books, “Beauty and the Beach (Key West Heat, Book 2).”

“When supermodel Brandi Knox is hired for a tropical-themed magazine spread, she insists on having her favorite photographer, Justin Malone, do the job. He arranges the shoot on Sunset Key, near Key West. The two have been involved on and off for several years, in a friends-with-benefits situation. This time, their feelings for each other seem to have developed into something deeper. When the sun finally sets on their latest assignment, will they still be just friends, or something more?”

This is a fun read with two likeable characters who share a lot of heat ‘neath the palms. It’s an interracial romantic comedy that touches on the perils of pop culture and celebrity. Brandi is a popular fashion model, sort of a Tyra Banks type, with an entourage and a huge following. Justin has always been protective of her when they’ve worked together, making certain that she not only looks good in his photos, but that she leaves the assignment with her emotions intact. The attraction between them has been evident, but more along the lines of casual hook-ups and booty calls. Their interactions are playful and teasing, as in this excerpt:

Justin took a drink of wine before aiming his camera at the sunset over Key West. “How come you still live in Georgia? Most of the models I work with operate out of New York or LA.”

“I like to stay close to my family and my roots. Why do you still live in Cincinnati?”

“Same reason, I suppose.” He laughed softly. “I remember when you came there to visit me last year in the dead of winter.”

Brandi shuddered. “I’ll never forget it. Froze my ass off. Do you still have that God-awful brown velveteen couch and armchair combo in your living room?”

“Nah, I upgraded to something better.”

She chuckled. “When I told my mother that I was going to spend a long weekend with a white guy I’d been seeing, she almost fainted.”

 “Why?”

“That sort of thing just isn’t done on her side of the family.”

“What about your father? How did he feel about it?”

“He’s pretty cool about things and he doesn’t have a problem with my life choices.” She paused. “In fact, you were my first.”

 “Your first what?”

 “My first white guy, silly.”

 “I hope you weren’t disappointed.”

She looked into his eyes. “I kept coming back for more, didn’t I?” Brandi rested her hand on his arm. “I liked shacking up in that one-bedroom apartment of yours.”

 “Even though it was cramped?”

“It was big enough for the two of us and that’s all that mattered.”

“Yeah, it was kinda cozy, wasn’t it?”

“Mm-hmm. The fact that it was twenty below zero outside made cuddling more fun, too.”

He smiled at the memory. “I think that was the best staycation I ever spent with a woman.” He paused as something came back to him. “I still remember the phone call two weeks after you went home.”

Brandi cast her eyes down. “I was really scared when I was late.” She looked at him. “What would you have done if I’d been pregnant?”

He took her hand and squeezed it. “I would’ve been there for you.”

 “Seriously?”

“Yeah.” He sipped his wine while deciding if he really wanted to say what was on his mind. “Brandi, when we started our affair, I knew I was breaking the first rule.”

 “Which rule?”

“Don’t sleep with the models. It’s what they teach you in Photography 101. But there was something about you that made me want to take the chance, and made me care about you. I know we’ve always said Don’t ask, don’t tell, but when I see a tabloid pic of you on the arm of some jock or rock star, I die a little inside.”

She leaned in close, cupped his cheek in her palm then kissed him. “They don’t mean anything, Justin. They’re just photo ops arranged by some paparazzi to hustle a quick buck.”

“I’m going to respect our rule and not ask what happens after the cameras go away.”

“You don’t need to because I’ll tell you what happens – nothing. Some of them try their damnedest to get me into bed but I know how to say no.”

Justin leaned over and gently kissed her. “You didn’t have to tell me that, but thanks.”

If you’re in the mood for quick fun read with great atmosphere, some laughs, steamy sex and a realistic romance with a will-they-or-won’t-they premise, check out “Beauty and the Beach.” Available at Amazon Kindle, and wherever great e-books are sold.

Five More Favorite Antique Book Covers

I have a love-hate relationship with book covers. I know a book is supposed to have a good cover. As a broke graphic design school dropout, I design what I think are passable covers for my books. I'm sure actual book cover artists would disagree.

However, we aren't here to talk about my questionable book cover design skills.

Back in December, I published a post featuring some of my favorite old-fashioned book covers. If you'd like to revisit that post, here's the link.

https://sweetnsexydivas.blogspot.com/2024/12/the-art-of-old-fashioned-book-covers.html

Today, I'd like to share a few more gems from the golden age of publishing.

I really do have a thing for classic book covers, and while I am not one to judge a book by its cover, this cover screams "quality." The red lettering and embellishments on the muted golden-brown background is classy and classical. An angel is telling us this book would be a divine read. What's not to like?

As for the cons, this cover does nothing to hint at the contents of the book. Still, it's undeniably an impressive piece of artwork.

This cover, on the other hand, tells the reader exactly what they can expect. The image features a variety of animals in a pleasing shade of green. The artistic style gives the creatures a three-dimensional quality. The elephant looks like it's about to march right off the book's cover. This is a stunning work of art.

This little skeleton is marvelously freaky. I love it! I'm assuming this is a journal or diary. However, it would make an excellent cover for a collection of macabre poetry.

This cover is a masterpiece! The way the snake threads through the skull's eyes, the bat holding the skull in its claws, the bright golden stars on the gray background; all the elements come together in fantastical, macabre beauty. This is the sort of book that I would put in a glass case and not let anyone touch it.

Wrapping things up on a less eerie note, these charming golden frogs on a rusty background with green leaves and little white bell-shaped flowers draw the eye to the center of the image. This cover is a delightful work of art.

I hope you've enjoyed this little diversion. I know these covers wouldn't work for today's market, except perhaps with a poetry collection. However, I always appreciate their true artistic quality and the hard work that went into designing and creating them.

A New Apocalyptic Survival Thriller Series by January Bain

Good Morning from me and Baby Ling Ling!

A wise woman told me a photo of a cat is always appreciated, so I thought, why not show off my beautiful fluffy baby girl!

I hope this message finds you well this fine June morning! Such a wonderful time of year with everything summer on the horizon.

I'm here today to talk about a new series I've just begun writing: World Gone Dark. I mention it because I have 9 books planned, something a bit out of my comfort zone. I think the stretch as a writer is good for me. I'll let you know next month if I manage to keep my sanity or not?!

This new series will follow the Mackenzie clan as they struggle to survive in the hollers of Kentucky. I always wanted to write a series set in the South and have thoroughly enjoyed the research, including family good recipes passed down for generations.

One of the interesting things I've discovered is what people keep in their bug-out bags when they are expecting a disaster to strike. This is an incomplete list but it gets one thinking. Perhaps you would like to add something to a comment about what you couldn't live without? I would find that very interesting! Thank you and have a grand month.

General bug-out bag list:

First Aid Supplies

Cash

NOAA battery-powered radio

Rain jacket

Headlamp

Flashlight

Multi-tool like a Leatherman

Compass and paper maps

Packets of food and nuts

Energy bars

Bottle of water

LifeStraw

Medicines

Extra clothes and especially socks

Plastic tarp if you have room

Toilet paper

So, what couldn't you do without?

Happy Day to you!

Hugs, January /Storyteller
