Spring: The Most Romantic Season of All

As you might suspect from my branding as the Celtic Romance Queen,

I’ve written Romantasy set at the Summer Solstice.

The longest day of the year.

The Unicorn and the Druidess

At Summer Solstice, people aren’t what they seem—they could be… a unicorn …a god…or someone you fall in love with.

Druidess Maelona pursues a unicorn into the woods and returns with a runaway slave boy she takes under her wing. Before she can go back to look for the unicorn, a handsome stranger ignites a fiery attraction within her. But she can tell he's keeping something from her. She suspects that he may be a Roman spy.

God Epon’s blood burns at first sight of the gorgeous Druidess. Goaded by his desire for her, he passes through the portal from the otherworld as a unicorn. Then he runs into the forest and she gives chase. There, he shapeshifts into human form to get to know her better. Plus, to win her trust, he fights the Romans and saves her tribe.

But even then, will he and Maelona be able to overcome the insurmountable odds of a romance between a mortal and an immortal being anything more than a summertime tryst?

And I've written Romantasy set at the Winter Solstice.

The longest night of the year.

The Bear and the Druidess.
Sometimes a secret must be revealed to move from the winter of love into its spring.

Romans stole all the winter grain from Druidess Bronwen’s tribe. Now, pursued by Romans, she ducks into a cave to hide. There she finds a handsome warrior who offers to help. He ignites a fiery spark of attraction within her but she can tell he’s keeping something from her.

The prayers of a beautiful druidess he can’t resist lead the Bear God Artaois into the cave where Bronwen is hiding. He pretends to be asleep until she finds him.

Artaois (Art) is determined to spend the longest night of the year with her. But Bronwen doesn’t realize he’s a god. He keeps his secret from her and even though he can transform into a bear, he only reveals himself in human form.

With the Winter Solstice upon them, can Artaois (Art) find a way to save her tribe from starvation? And, when Bronwen finally discovers his secret, will she leave the romance building between them out in the cold?

But I’ve never written about the Spring Equinox—Ostara.

That may change after attending an Ostara celebration the other day at Lark & Owl Bookstore in the Austin, Texas area.

Ostara falls at the spring equinox, usually between March 19 and 22, when day and night stand in perfect balance before the year tips toward the sun.

The name comes from a root meaning to shine, to rise, to bring light. Eostre was a dawn goddess tied to the east, where the sun rises after darkness. That is where we get Easter from—the Saxon name for the goddess, Eostre—which means east.

The festival honors rebirth and new beginnings, but in a gentler way—a slow unfolding. The first green breaking through the cold. Life stirring, even before it’s fully seen.

Its symbols—hares and eggs—reflect that same sense of new life.

This is a video of a recipe for a soothing salt bath you can make at Lark and Owl for Ostara.

Lark and Owl also has a book of Love Spells.

In my enemies-to-lovers novel, The Celtic Prince, which takes place during the Saxon Wars, my heroine, Alefreada, is a Saxon and would have celebrated Ostara as a child. She also has a love potion of her own.

Happy Ostara to Everyone.

The Bodyguard Series

 The Secretary’s Bodyguard

After writing several science fiction stories, my muse and I decided to try our hand at a contemporary romance novel with a twist. So, we mixed romance with action. The result was The Secretary's Bodyguard, starring Ethan Mahoney, the bodyguard of the Secretary of State, and his lovely wife, Jazmin. During an official visit to Colombia, the team is attacked and chased out of town and must find its way back from the jungle on foot. The team comes together better than expected, thanks to the bodyguards’ excellent leadership and Jazmin’s toughness and her preparedness for a survival tour.

My muse and I didn't initially intend to write a sequel, but the characters grew on us as I wrote, and seven more stories followed in the years that followed. We loved the main characters, as well as the ones on the team. For instance, we had planned to kill off the secretary’s assistant during the escape but decided against it. It was a wise decision—in the sequels, the same assistant plays an important role and becomes a valuable asset.

Yes, we had fun with all the stories, characters, and twists that practically wrote themselves. LOL.

Enjoy!

Description

Ethan Mahoney loves his wife dearly and arranges for her to accompany him on his assignment as bodyguard of the Secretary of State to Colombia. The journey ends in a fiasco that leaves the secretary and his entourage stranded in the Colombian woods with terrorists on their heels, not knowing if they will survive and find their way back to civilization.

Excerpt

“You would’ve slapped him?” His voice tipped over with the last word. Ethan tried to imagine his wife hitting Walter Coleman, the incarnation of a strict, very conservative and always serious chief of security. It was funny. Reconsidering that she had brought down Ryan, the image lost some of its entertainment value. He frowned as he watched her very nice butt on a westbound trail that only she saw. There was that little idea in the back of his head he better ignored.

“He insinuated that I might be in a setup with the terrorists following us. It’s completely stupid, I know, but that’s the way he thinks.” She stopped on the way up and turned to where Ethan reached her. Her frown was deep and she looked tired. “He does his job and he was right to remind you to do yours. We’re not here because of some weekend trip gone wonky. You have to work and probably risk your life saving the secretary.”

He put his hands on her hips. “Princess, can you imagine that I put his life over yours? It’s not gonna happen. I’m very proud that you’re so brave. So tough. It might come out all wrong, but it’s not. I didn’t expect you to be like this. Not even with the police training and all.”

“I panic on the inside, Ethan.” She caressed his stubbly cheek and ran her thumb over the cleft in his chin. He saw her fight off emotions that would lead to tears. “I’m so afraid you’ll get hurt. And that those men catch up to us and kill us all in cold blood. I can’t stand the thought that you’ll throw yourself in the line of fire and that those bastards finally end what they began.” She combed his hair with her fingers. “I can’t think of a life without you.”

“I’ll work hard so no one gets killed. Would that be okay?”

She trembled as he took her in his arms. “They’re still coming after us and they’ve got the larger firepower, don’t they? Please, Ethan, tell me that we stand a chance.”

He let go and smiled at her. “Well, we got you with us. And if I got the secretary right, he’ll hire you as recruitment. Wait an hour and he’ll order Walter to hand you a gun.”

She turned and walked on. “I can fire a gun. I was a police officer.”

Ethan, his eyes already back on her derrière, opened his mouth for a reply, rethought the argument, and kept silent until she turned with a frown.

“Do you doubt I can shoot?”

Again, Ethan knew he was in trouble, no matter how he answered the question. “Walter…won’t hand a weapon to anyone he hasn’t personally trained. He’s…nuts when it comes to weapons and shooting. He wouldn’t let you touch—”

“He’d reject my help even if Ryan can’t shoot anymore?”

Ethan heard the outrage in her voice and called himself stupid to have brought up the subject. His mind juggled the possible ways to end the discussion. “Ryan’s fine, even with his left hand. I saw him train.”

“But, honestly, if those bastards come up to us, we stand a better chance to fight if I’m with you.”

“You’re right.” He didn’t know what else to say. Yet her argument would fall on the deaf ears of Walter Coleman. Ethan marched on, pondering how to avoid the unnecessary confrontation between his strong wife and the even stronger chief of security.

A steamy, slow-burn paranormal romance set in ancient Scotland #fantasy #historicalparanormalromance #enemiestolovers

Blurb:

Do you like romance, intrigue, and star-crossed love? A mixture of history and Celtic mythology, Cat’s Curse is an ancient Scotland paranormal romance based on a real Irish king known as Aedan the Treacherous in the Welsh court. Warning: Iron-willed enchantresses, hunky sword-wielding warriors, some violence and steamy sex, more than a little blood-drinking, a complicated love triangle, and lots of passion.

Note: This 3-book series must be read in order.

He’s a cursed, exiled Irish prince. She’s a succubus with lost memories. Destiny brought them together. Their dark secrets will tear them apart.

Excerpt:

The hunt summoned Cardea, it’s call as alluring as a siren’s song. Driven by hunger, she ventured further into the thick forest. Pale, ghostly beeches, birches, and rowans gleamed amid shadowy, lush pines and oaks. Moonbeams cleaved the night, striking the earth between outstretched branches like glinting metal blades, and icy air nipped her face, reminding her she had once been mortal.

In the distance, a man’s deep voice echoed a thread of angry curses. Slumbering birds awoke and took off from a neighboring oak’s top-most branches. Wings fluttered far above her head.

The strong, coppery smell of warm human blood stirred her senses. A pleased smile formed on Cardea’s lips as she anticipated feeding and slaking her thirst. She avoided the crunchy frost-encrusted earth and stalked on silent boot-clad feet through carpets of fern toward the delectable scent. Like a shadow, she darted in and out of the lofty trees.

Another sound roused the hushed, sleeping wood. Something moved at a fast pace toward her, crunching leaves and twigs beneath pounding feet. Cardea stopped in her tracks and shimmered her body into the shadows.

The baying of hounds tore through the night.

Fear struck her like a resounding hammer blow, and she froze. Demon hunters used hounds to hunt creatures like her. Animals could sense Cardea even when she became one with the shadows. In her haste to prey on the human, she’d failed to notice the hounds’ scent. Before she could react, two calf-sized dogs pinned her to the ground and licked her face.

Cardea sputtered and struggled to get the slavering beasts off her.

“Fian, Donnan!” a man shouted in a deep, commanding voice.

The two hounds obeyed their master and backed off.

Cardea sat up and faced the sharp edge of a sword blade. She drew in a sharp breath and remained still. A splash of pale moonlight revealed a man with long black hair standing over her, his great height matching a towering oak, his arms thick and muscled.

“I would not move if I were ye, lass.” The man’s thick brogue washed over her, sweet and honey-like.

*

Reviewer Quote:

I enjoyed the setting and era of this story, especially with the mix of mythology and romance. Aedan and Cardea’s friendship runs hot and cold, both making assumptions and mistakes as their relationship develops. I liked the magical elements and the ancient ways with the beliefs in fae and nature. There’s a battle to be won in this story, but I’m sure there will be more wars in the next book in the series.

Speaking of aliens...

Okay, we weren’t really speaking of aliens but they’re often not far from my mind. I admit to watching the news attentively when they discuss UAPs (formerly known as an easier title of UFOs). Imagine, it wasn’t that long ago that no one mentioned UFOs for fear of being thought a looney tune. If a pilot reported seeing a UFO he might risk his career. Now, extraterrestrials are nearly an accepted conversation topic in polite society. Ancient Aliens is a hit TV show, and everyone recognizes the names Mulder and Scully.

Triple S Bride was my first foray into a sci-fi/space story and only my second dip into the ménage pool. It was fun! Sabina, a woman on the run, escapes from an abusive relationship by signing up to be an intergalactic bride. She thinks she’s going to marry Walt Sheridan on a far-off planet. Instead, with a dearth of women on C8282, she’s to serve as the bride to Walt and his two brothers. It’s only fair. At least from the men’s viewpoint. Takes Sabina a minute to get used to the idea.

C8282 isn’t a planet inhabited by aliens as much as by creatures, each more dangerous than the last. It’s quite an adjustment. But all in a bride’s work on the Triple S Ranch.

Blurb:
Sabina Volt signs on to be a futuristic mail order bride in an effort to escape her abusive fiancé on Earth. And oh, yeah, the attempted murder charge he trumped up to bring her back from wherever she escaped. She flew off into the universe to marry rancher Walt Sheridan on C8282, but she is in for a surprise. She thinks she’s marrying Walt. Instead, she’s marrying the Sheridans: Walt and his two brothers, Charlie and Dan. C8282 holds all kinds of new dangers—versas and grenetts and more—but it also holds a whole lot a lovin’.

Excerpt:
"Do you need help with your bags, ma'am?"

Sabina Volt looked up into the earnest young face of the transporter steward. He set her two duffel bags beside the seat, retrieved from the storage closet assigned her. Once petrified of stepping aboard a plane or shuttle, Sabina now wished she could hide in the cabin and avoid disembarking. She no longer had that option—she had to get off.

She shoved to her feet. "No thanks. These are all I have." A glance up the aisle showed an empty cabin. Though the young man's face didn't show impatience, he probably wished she'd get her sorry ass in gear so he could leave.

The steward politely stood aside so she could follow the flashing green lights embedded in the floor leading to the hatch. Dragging her feet as much as possible, dread building with each step, she made her way.

How had she ended up here? It had been sheer madness, signing a contract as a mail-order bride to a man she didn't know in order to escape a man she knew all too well. But the remaining ache from nearly-healed broken ribs proved that most any action would be better than staying on Earth as Kevin Groman's punching bag.

"Thank you for flying with us," said another steward at the hatch.

"Sure," Sabina muttered. Hopefully she wouldn't soon fly with them or anyone else. Not back to Earth at least, or anywhere near her former fiancé.

She took a deep breath, eyeing the length of insulated portable structure connecting the shuttle to the terminal. You've come this far. Don't turn coward now. "It's going to be all right," she muttered. "Buck up."

The lights in the terminal stung her eyes, and after the quiet of the shuttle the noise struck her like a living thing. Comm sets dotted the walls every fifty feet or so, all sending out the latest news from Earth at top decibels. Dozens of people, mostly men and shuttle crews, stood around watching the sets or holding shouted conversations over the din. She blinked and stood a moment, adjusting to the new environment.

Then she saw him. Or at least, the cowboy with crossed arms who leaned insolently against the check-in desk sure looked like Walter Sheridan. She’d stared at his hologram often enough to have his features memorized, yet the man watching her wasn't exactly what she expected.

His face looked sculpted from stone, with a squared chin and sharp cheekbones. Wives' tales claimed smiling caused wrinkles, but no tell-tale lines marred this man's face. He had the coloring of someone with brown hair, but she couldn't tell the color because a sweat-stained, dusty cowboy hat covered his head. When their gazes met, his eyes gave her pause. Green as late spring fields depicted in laser paintings, they were also penetrating and unforgiving. This man wouldn't trust easily or give any quarter. Like Kevin.

Oh, God. She couldn't breathe. For a panicky moment she thought she might pass out. Turn around! Get back on that shuttle. Make them pry you out if need be. She swung back toward the door only to find it locked. Fanning her face with her hand, she had no choice but to find someplace to hide. Coming here had been a mistake, a horrible mistake. Run! Anywhere would be better than—

"Are you okay?"

She didn't look but knew instinctively who stood beside her and took her elbow. He firmly guided her to a chair. When she sat, he forced her head down between her knees.

"Breathe," he ordered.

"I'm fine," Sabina said at last, and she did feel better, though a little silly. Kevin was a long way off. It might have taken her half a year and two beatings, but she finally regained her mind, took back her life and escaped him. The method might prove cowardly and impulsive, but she didn't care. As long as coming here didn't mean jumping from the solar roaster into the core generator.

Please don't let Walter be like Kevin!

Reviews:

Absolutely loved every moment throughout this book an hope to see what happens next with the entire series. Worth every penny...a story that I'll be rereading again.”

“I really did enjoy this book a new author for me and probably one I will follow further.”

“This novel is a wild erotic ride! It takes you to new worlds with all kinds of great characters.”

“In my opinion it's the great character development that sets this book apart from others. I'm not usually a sci-fi fan, but the seamless way it's woven into the story did not feel like the usual easy-out plot vehicle. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys a well-written, comitted [sic] menage story.”

“I love the science fiction and the menage mix! Enjoyed every page and didn't put it down until I was done! I can't wait until the next one.”

“Couldn't put it down. Worth a read definitely.”

Brody gritted his teeth again. She had to be there. He had no choice. People were discussing robbing her and belittling her… just like he had. Damn it.

He bowed his head. He had to think about her as a person and para, not a source of money. That’s how they all saw her -- a reflection of her disposable income. She lived her life like nothing mattered. It was all a big party. She didn’t command respect.

Then again, he didn’t exactly command it, either. He did better behind the scenes. Let him stay in his lab with his medicines and potions. There he was fine. All he wanted to do was help his fellow paras.

“Excuse me.” A woman tugged his arm and yanked him out of the main space and behind a curtain.

“What the?” He stared at her. He’d never seen anyone with golden brown eyes. They were transfixing. But she’d grabbed him. “What do you want?”

“You.”

He couldn’t look away from her. Most of her face was concealed behind a black, feathery mask. He could swear he knew her, but he couldn’t place her.

“I need to speak to you.” She held onto him. “Do you know Skylar?”

Location, Location, Location

When it comes to writing a romance series, there's many elements that need to come together. Most of them are fairly obvious. There needs to be great characters, fantastic stories with lots of love and pining and banter and tension, some defining similarity between all the stories, whether it's taking place in the same place, or the same group of people, whether they are family, friends, coworkers, on the same team, something like that.

But one of the elements I see forgotten most often is the setting. The location where the stories take place is just as important as any of part of the story. Setting gives the reader a place they want to return to for multiple books. A place to escape to when they want to check out from the real world. And as the world gets more and more crazy, having that escape is more and more essential to all of us.

Not focusing on location is a missed opportunity for any author. Building that world in your story allows you to create depth, complexity, excitement, and conflict that might not be there otherwise.

When I approach writing a series, I try to think of the setting as another character. A character I can grow, expand, explore. A character I can use to show the different facets of any of the other characters, just like how your heroine might react differently to her big brother than her best friend does. Wink, wink. A character I can use to increase the conflict and tension when it’s needed, or add levity. Whatever the story needs.

The more real and vibrant the location feels, the more the world is grounded for readers, and the more they can escape into your world and away from their own troubles. A place nothing like the world they live in.

But one of my all-time favorite parts about creating a locations is that I get to make up the rules. I can create a world where anything and everything is possible. I can write a small town that holds massive Christmas Ball that is attended by everyone in town. That isn’t happening in my town, or any I know, but it can happen in the ones I create. When I’m in charge, anything can happen.

And if in one mysterious small town, the town’s inhabitants can find love through mysterious letters that grant the opportunity to explore their deepest desires, I can do that. And that’s exactly what happens in Snowedin, VT. A small town where everyone knows everyone's business and fantasies come true, because I want them to.

In each of these Snowedin fantasies, a mysterious letter arrives for the characters that allows them to enjoy a night of fantasy with someone, or multiple someone’s depending on the fantasy, that wants to explore the same desires they do. And in my world, every fantasy always ends in true love.

If this sounds like the perfect way to spend a day, you should check out my Snowedin fantasies series. The first book, Reunion Makes Three, is currently on sale for only $0.99 at bookstrand.com.
