HER CAPTAIN returns!

Back in December, HER CAPTAIN, one of my favorite stories and possibly one my best books, was released by Fated Desires Publishing.

HER CAPTAIN was part of FD's multi-authored "Tempting Signs" series. FD's plan was to release 12 books, one a month, each corresponding to a particular sign.

HER CAPTAIN featured a Capricorn hero, who was a former Navy SEAL, struggling to adjust to civilian life. The book was in the midst of promo and a blog tour when FD authors got word that FD was shutting down.

After only a few short weeks out in the wild, HER CAPTAIN was gone from e-shelves everywhere.

FD was good about giving rights back to their authors immediately, though.

And, luckily, one of my favorite publishers, Decadent Publishing (thank you Valerie Mann and Kate Richards), agreed to give HER CAPTAIN a new home. And with a little light editing and a brand new gorgeous cover (thank you Valerie Tibbs!),  HER CAPTAIN sails again.

 (Sometime soon.)

Want a sneak peek?

Slate Claybourne, a sniper and former Navy SEAL, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry Island, desperate for the mundane, everyday routines he once wanted to escape.

A soul-dead man unable to be around people,  his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.

But animated Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be. She shocks him to the core when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists…and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.

First she crashes into him at the island’s Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment.

He's a Capricorn. She's an Aries. Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way.

But when a furious December nor’easter traps Slate and Holly together at Pieberry House, will love be in the signs?

Coming back soon!

Cerise shows you #Regency carriages! Tryst, anyone? Happy Bunny #Easter Day!

You're out there, I can see you, looking for those hidden eggs!
I've made you work this year and concealed them in tiny places that will make your heart go boom. Meanwhile, I give you the next 2 in my Regency Romp series! Have you see them? Hope so. I have been knocking myself out telling everyone about them because they are 99 cents...until they're not. SOON, too.
Find them here:

Imagine going for a carriage ride in London and this marvelous conveyance arrives!
This is my picture from the Royal Mews, the Semi-State Landau.
And if you do not care for the wind in your hair, you can see that the tops do fold up. No messy bed head for you! This wonderful coach is often used by the younger royals in parades such as the Trooping of the Color for the Queen's Birthday. Very popular with Queen Victoria, the coach gives a feeling of youth, vibrancy and allows for a full view of those in the seats. It was gilded and decorated for her Golden Jubilee in 1887, surviving today with the excellent care of the staff at the Mews.
But what would you do, what carriage would you want if it rains?
My picture from the Royal Mews.

Try this one! Known as the Scottish State Coach, it is used for glamorous state occasions when being seen is the best PR tactic. Built in 1830 for George IV's younger brother, the Duke of Cambridge, it was refurbished for the Royal household a century later. Used by Her Majesty to attend Scottish Parliament and other state occasions, the coach bears the Scottish crown on the top.

As for me, I intend to use a coach similar to it in my next Regency. Of course, the hero must be fabulously rich, perhaps even fabulously vain! Hopelessly handsome, too. Hence, the reason for the grand display.

And what sort of woman would not want to travel in such an open and obvious carriage, hmm? One who had reason to hide!

My last picture is one that tickled me to see it. Black. Square, with an old and ugly curtain over the window. Yes, it is a sedan chair. I shudder to think what a ride in this would have felt like! And we hope it would not have been too expensive because one was certainly paying for the convenience of not walking!

I begin soon with lots of great pix of elegant homes, fabulous shops, tons of dresses and houses and all sorts of yum from Bath, too! Thanks, S&S Divas. for Welcoming an Opinionated Rhymes-with-Witch! by Suz deMello

These days, we're inundated with people's opinions, and most of them are based in lies and half-truths (yes, I am referring to politics). And I am highly opinionated. I'm never surprised when I'm labeled by the B word. Because I am, though I'd rather be a witch than a bitch. Alas, magic isn't real (oh, hush up and wipe off those rainbows coming out of your unicorn's ass along with your tears. And, Virginia, there's no such person as Santa Claus. Deal with it.)

This is my first blog for the Sweet and Sexy Divas and I'm grateful to have this forum. Though I'll keep politics out of it, I do have very strong opinions about books and will not hesitate to share them, though I will refrain from slamming another author by name despite what I may think about her writing. Because, in general, most of us are lovely people.

Despite the fact that we're sisters under the skin and all of that warm-and-fuzzy stuff, still, I find a lot to dislike these days though I am, I swear, a positive person.

In a book by an otherwise good person who will go unnamed (I wish to spare her embarrassment and public humiliation), she wrote that the detective hero had helped the prosecution's case with his testimony on appeal.

This happened early in the book and I did not read another word. Even laypersons who have watched a highly publicized trial (or are addicts of TV shows like Law and Order) are aware that testimony is never taken on appeal. In their decision-making, appellate courts are limited to the record, i.e., the evidence presented at the trial court level.

Several years passed. This same nice lady's career advanced, and I decided to try another of her books. Though I didn't read anything as egregious, still, the second book of hers I tried was simply a mess. It bore all the hallmarks of a series opening novel in which the author leaves all kinds of loose ends in order to have something to tie up in later books. A paranormal romantic suspense, it was well out of her comfort zone (she usually writes contemporary RS with a strong police procedural feel) and it was just bad bad bad. Predictably, the series sputtered and died after only one or two more books, when quite clearly the author had planned for several based on the characters she'd introduced.

I had forgiven her too early. Maybe I should not have forgiven her at all.

In another very nice lady's first book for Harlequin, she began with the heroine awakening from sleep by an odd noise, and then spent several pages with the character thinking about her situation. In other words, the author dropped an info dump on the unsuspecting reader starting at page one. That never works with me. I hate info dumps even when they're only a paragraph, and they certainly don't belong in the beginning of a book. Get me to care about the character before you lay a whole bunch of backstory on me. Otherwise, that's just boring. Actually, info dumps don't belong anywhere. Slip in the info cleverly, without me noticing.

Though I really respect this author as a person, I haven't read anything by her since, and it's been a very long time. I've tried--I swear--but after a couple minutes of struggle, I give up. I just don't like the writing, though I admire the person.

Other authors may slump and with me, my interest never recovers. And it's sad. I used to adore Ja--(oops, almost let the kitty out of the backpack) a certain author in all of her personae, especially her historicals, which I loved, loved, LOVED! Then the dreaded series bug bit her--or maybe it bit her editors. She began writing these very formulaic books, mostly three part series. They are awful, stilted, predictable bores.

I don't understand why an author of J's stature bothers. She can't possibly need more money or fame--she's already there.

Maybe I'm probably too picky about what I read, and often find myself moping around grumbling that there's nothing to read, it's all crap, I might as well go reread something I know will be good.

Should I be more open-minded? Probably. But please, authors, do your research when writing about anything, but especially about something--like the legal system--that a lot of readers have experienced.

Don't bore your readers. That means no info dumps even if you think that they're wonderful prose. Maybe they are, but until the reader is deeply invested in the characters, no one is going to want to read them.

And don't get formulaic. I hear over and over again that romances are formulaic. Okay, they are. So are mysteries--they all begin with a crime and end with a solution. Most pop fiction is formulaic.

But somehow, we still love Sherlock even though we know what's going to happen. We still love Georgette Heyer even though we know that the dashing Regency blade will marry the sweet debutante.

The search for the elusive something is what obsesses writers, who want to create it, and readers, who want to experience it.

When you find out what it is, let me know.

If you want to read more about my opinions on writing, read this book:

It really is wonderful prose.

When is not chaos? @kayelleallen #ChaosIsComing

Bringer of Chaos
As if life isn't crazy enough, we add our own issues into the mix. I am OCDC enough to insist on fixing typos as I write. I can't let a typo sit on a line above me, or the line behind where I'm writing. I have to fix it NOW. When I'm driving, I need the mirror "just so" in order to see all the lanes behind and to the side of me. I adjust it frequently. I move, it moves, the road jiggles us and it starts all over again. I recently had the mirror re-stuck to the windscreen because it fell off in my hand. Did it fall off because I adjusted it so much? I don't know, but I'm not asking.

When I decided to write about the immortal warrior Pietas, who's been the villain in several of my books, I thought he might have similar issues. Boy was I right! And I thought I was insistent on details? In the beginning of the book, Pietas performs a ritual before entering into peace talks with a group of humans. The ritual is designed to help him focus, and he repeats it later in the book. It's when he puts on the mask shown in the cover. Pietas has a mantra that he repeats a half dozen times in the book, to remind himself he will survive; he will overcome. His singleminded devotion to duty makes him one of the most implacable, indomitable warriors ever born.

After the ritual is complete in the beginning of the book, his sister (who aids him) asks if he's ready for the peace talks. Pietas says, "No. I'm ready for war." Here's a peek at the ritual. The art is by my son, Jamin Allen, created specifically for this scene.
Early on the first morning of the peace talks, Pietas entered his round bathing room.
Starlight filtered through the portal overhead. Sleek silver walls reflected the cool light.
He remained at the door, content to savor its calming glow. Its beauty did not dispel the worry niggling at his mind. Not given to trusting premonitions and omens, he grounded himself with meditation. Once he centered himself and calmed his spirit, Pietas took a deep, purifying breath, and with slow deliberation, exhaled.
"Time to begin. Lights."
The room brightened.
He shed his silk robe and let it fall at his feet. Nude, his platinum hair streaming down his back and chest, he lifted his hands, palms up as if praying.
On the planet Kaffir, warriors used this ritual to summon spirits. He used it to affirm his own superior strength and prowess.
Before a copper fire pit, he plucked one blond hair, and fed it to the fire. It singed and melted.
"As fire has victory over life, so I have victory over my enemies."
He passed a hand through the flame, and hissed at the searing heat, relishing the pain. He cupped his hand over the flame's source, and held it until the fire went out. The burns on his palm cooled, and as he watched, the skin healed. Of all the elements, fire alone had power to linger on an Ultra's skin. He welcomed it as a symbol of victory.
"I am powerful, as fire is powerful."
Pietas thrust both hands forward, clutched his fists, and yanked them back.
"I own the wind. I prevail over the breath of my enemies."
In the bathing area, he took six steps down into a waist-deep pool.
"Water submits to my presence the way enemies submit to my will."
He cupped water in his hands, lifted it, and let it pour down his arms.
"The blood of my enemies trickles into the pool of time, is absorbed, and forgotten."
He pushed wet fingers through his hair, and released it.
"My mind is clear. I do not waver."
He submersed, and rose, head thrown back, face lifted to the sparkle of stars above.
"My body submits to my will. No pain defeats me. No fear touches me."
He swept his hands down his chest to his loins, and the tops of his thighs.
"My will is absolute."
A scratching sound alerted him to the presence of his silver-skinned android servant. The creature entered, and Pietas fixed him with a hard glare. "Why did you interrupt me?"
"Your guest is here, my lord, in the living area." He offered Pietas a towel.
"Leave it." He waved the android away.
After exiting the pool, Pietas brushed off the water and wrung out his hair. He pulled out a tray holding half a dozen clasps. He chose a silver dragon studded with six turquoise stones, twisted his wet hair, and fastened it up, out of the way.
He dried his face, gathered a brush, and picked up a pot of black face paint. Leaning in close to a freestanding mirror, he outlined a bandit's mask from beneath his eyes to over his dark eyebrows, and filled it with black.
He'd worn the mask in battle ever since defeating the First Division, a human special-ops group formed to fight Ultras. It came about because Pietas had slain an enemy, and blood splashed across his eyes. Thinking the blood belonged to Pietas, the Ultra troops had rallied to him and slaughtered the humans. The blood dried almost black.
Stories of how their "bandit king" had conquered the First Division filled the night. The name stuck. To his troops, he was First Conqueror, War Leader of the Ultras.
Pietas turned his head side to side, surveying the effect.
His body would reject foreign matter on his skin. The Ultra metabolism protected from every perceived attack, even harmless face paint. He closed his eyes and sprayed sealant over the mask to delay its disappearance by a few hours.
Satisfied with his looks, Pietas pulled on a pair of loose white lounging pants. With a deep, cleansing breath, he opened the door. Damp, shirtless, barefoot, he padded into the adjacent room.
Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas
Two enemy warriors: one human, one immortal. Different in belief, alike in spirit, marooned together on an alien world.
Imprisoned and in isolation over a year without food or water, the immortal Pietas survives. Though broken in body, his intellect and will are intact, thanks to Six, the special ops warrior who captured him, but kept him sane. The warrior had no hand in his deprivation and, like Pietas, was betrayed by his own kind. When Pietas is abandoned on an alien world with nothing but his honor--and Six--he must find and rejoin other immortal exiles. After centuries of war, Pietas detests humans and kills them on sight, but he is too damaged to continue on his own. Though he despises needing help, he allows Six to nurture and restore him to full strength, and then accompany him. As they cross the planet together on foot, the immortal begins to wonder if he has found his first human friend, or if Six is loyal only because Pietas could keep the others from tearing him to shreds. This human will either be his closest living friend, or the one whose betrayal will trigger all-out vengeance by the most powerful immortal ever born.
Immortal. Warrior. Outcasts. Traitors took everything. Except their honor.

Back To The One I Love

The thrilling adventure of first love and self-discovery
is just as groovy the second time around.

Have you ever wished you could go back in time to a day or event that changed your life forever?

Over forty years ago at the Woodstock Arts and Music festival in 1969, Cash climbed on the back of Keith's motorcycle and they've been together ever since. Now, over forty years later Cash wonders what would have happened if she got on a different guy's motorcycle.

This week featured the first day of spring, the perfect time for a super zany comedy romance with a splash of fantasy and time travel is set during the summer of 69 at the Woodstock art and musical festival. My hero and heroine are in their latter 60's. So, in addition to being a great read of all ages, 17 on up, I'd say, it's especially nice for the baby boomer set, like me. And the perfect Easter/Spring/Sumer vacation read. It's a novella so you can easily breeze through it during your down time, relaxing on a blanket after a picnic, reading on the chaise lounge pool side or at the beech.

A free-spirited, baby boomer couple, Cash and Keith, find their marriage of forty-five years unraveling amid apathy, boredom and retirement. Cash feels Keith is no longer attracted to her and he’s consumed with a couch-potato life of streaming Firefly all day long. Trying to hang on to their marriage and rekindle the romance they
lost along the way they turn to a counselor. The therapist uses an unorthodox magical method of a time traveling Volkswagen van to cast them back into the garden…four days of Eden at Woodstock….the epic music festival… where they first fell in love.
Will the freedom of Woodstock lure Keith and Cash to push their individual boundaries and seek new lovers? Or can Déjà Vu and grooving to music….truly lead them to rediscover the peace, love, and harmony they once shared?
Give peace, love, and music a chance…groove on a copy of Back To the One I Love today.

Some ghosts won’t take “yes” for an answer.

Jack Harris has loved Legs Anderson since they were kids. Now that he has her in his bed, he has no intention of letting her go. Aunt Ada has other ideas, even from the grave.

Orphaned at a young age, Legs Anderson owes her Aunt Ada everything. The stoic old lady raised her, and Ada’s warnings about men—and the Harris boys in particular—have stuck, even after her death. Of course, that could be because Ada stuck around, too.

Patience is not one of Jack Harris’s virtues, and he’s waited too long to start a life with the woman he’s loved since childhood instead of them just knocking boots. Now Ada is interfering from beyond the grave, haunting the old Victorian house she bequeathed to her niece and reinforcing Legs’s fears of commitment. But Jack won’t give up. No matter what trouble may follow, the house will be renovated, Ada will learn to let go, Legs will put her money where her mouth is…and then Jack’ll put his lips everywhere else.

New Covers!! The Royal Shifters have gotten a makeover! #bookworm #pnr #coverreveal

The Royals have new covers! I've also generalized the series name to Royal Shifters instead of Royal Pride. Why?? Because book 4, Last Chance, will be about Royal Wolves. Check out all the new covers below.

Sometimes the greatest finds are unexpected.

Royal Shifters, book 1

After five centuries, Rafe Alexander knows what to expect from life--boredom broken by the occasional call from Shifter Affairs. No matter how mundane the job, he always accepts their plea for help. He knows what it's like to lose loved ones to the shifter trafficking rings decimating their species.

But the task that takes him to West Virginia changes everything. A human is dead. A shifter child is missing. And the human female connected to both tragedies is hiding a secret.

He needs to discover the mystery surrounding her. But the felines he houses--lion, tiger and jaguar--want him to get close to her for another reason. Jasmine is special, both for how she affects him and for the treasure she's been guarding.

And as danger mounts, he's left balancing his desire for revenge and his need to protect. But the line between them isn't always black and white, especially where his family is concerned.

Available at Amazon: http://amzn.to/1PeuxoR

A tortured man...A fearless woman...A mistake that'll change their lives forever.
Royal Shifters, book 2

Three centuries ago, Devin Moore sacrificed his sanity to save his sister. Every day since is spent in a constant battle of wills with the three crazed cats--lion, tiger and jaguar--he houses. Keeping his shattered mind together has taken its toll, destroying any hope of having a family, but he can't turn his back on innocents in need.

When information on his pride's missing child reaches him, he rushes to bring her home. But the rescue mission goes horribly wrong. Lena, the human female who turns herself into bait in order to protect the little girl, is wounded and struggling to survive.

In a desperate act, he saves Lena. But it doesn't erase his past mistakes. And for a broken man who's finally offered hope, there's only one thing left to do--prove his worth. The only problem? He'll never be whole. Or sane. But maybe...just maybe...even the damned can find peace.

Forbidden is in the eye of the beholder.
Royal Shifters, book 3

As a human living among shifters, Josh Conway is expected to abide by Pride law. But he’s never been very good at following rules. He’d rather make his own. The habit has gotten him in trouble over the years, but it’s all about the endgame. And this time he knows exactly what he wants--the gorgeous feline shifter who’s off-limits.

Mira is his. He knew it the moment he looked into her eyes. Of course, convincing her of the truth involves overcoming a prophecy, her protective family, and the little issue of them being different species. No big deal. He’ll figure out a way to make it work. His mind is made up. He’s not letting his woman go. Ever.
