Spring Break by Harlie Williams

View from the Carnival Freedom last year
By the time people read this, we will be 4 days from our second cruise.  Last year, my husband surprised me for my 50th birthday with a cruise to Cozumel, Belize, and Honduras.  We had such a great time that we are going again but taking our son, too.  This year we are off to Jamacia, Grand Caymans, and Cozumel.

However, with the instability of Jamaica, we are not doing anything except shopping in our little port area.  For the Grand Caymans Island it is 7 Mile Beach and in Cozumel, a boat ride to a private beach.  The boat we will be on is bigger and it's the Carnival Breeze.

So why am I telling you this?  Because this is the first family vacation that we are taking WITHOUT other relatives.  Most of our vacations are with my husband's family and we love it.  But this time, it's just the three of us and we are all excited.

Some people ask why we cruise during Spring Break?  Sure, it's more expensive but with school and work, it's really the only time that we can do it.  I'm not a believer in pulling out our child for a vacation during the school year.  Yes, I'm that mean mom.

So be good while I'm gone.  It was so nice to completely unplug from anything associated with my phone or computer last year.  The blogs will be silent during that time, too.  Email will be a mess but I can handle that.  I'm already getting my reading materials together, too.  I know have 3 e-readers.  Two Nooks and 1 Kindle Fire.

I'm so totally jealous! Way back, BC (before children), right after we got married, I was in sales and managed to earn a 1 week cruise down to Cancun (where the first thing we saw in Mexico was an old Chevy with a Cubs bumper sticker!) We also stopped in Cozymel and went snorkling, then in Cayman Islands to shop around in the town. Then we went to the private island owned by Norwegisn Cruise Lines. Sigh...Of course, we had to pay our own bar bill, and when we got off the boat and signed the tab...sheesh! How many people were we buying for? No wonder they never tell you what each drink costs.

We always swore we'd do it again, on an exciting decade anniversary. Alas, raising 4 kids has taken up all of the money we've made, as well as much of what we haven't even earned yet! So no cruising for us. We didn't even get a camping vacation last summer, since the husband was unemployed for a year. Now he just started a new job, but it will be a while before we can even do any camping.

So have a piña colada for me, and enjoy!
