The Writes of Spring - Escaping with my Muse

Vital to the survival of any creative soul, and I would argue everyone falls into this category in part, is discovering some way to feed the soul.

To stop and savor the moment.

To appreciate the colorful nature of the world.

In this case to welcome spring.

You know the old saying, stop and smell the roses? It's not just about the sweet perfume of the flower(s), but about taking the time to just be! There will always be deadlines, demands, and time dedicated to getting things done. For example, I've just celebrated a new release (Protecting Pilar) and I have another coming up this week (Wrangling Wanda). I'm hard at work on yet another book, I have a family to care for, animals to look after, physical therapy to go to and the list goes on and on.

Two weeks ago, I took two hours and I just was. I stopped to smell the roses and filled my soul to bursting. Two hours sustained me for two weeks. Imagine if you stopped for two hours every week? When the land is parched, even a drop of water is a welcome respite. Today is another day to escape with my muse and refill the well.

What will you do to stop and smell the roses this week?

Time for Spring Reading #Kensingtonromance #kensingtonbooks

Hi All,

As I write tonight, the sun still shines outside my window, birds sing, and the air feels like Spring. We're ready to put away the tissue boxes and cough medicine, and I hope you are, too.

As a writer, I’m also celebrating the launch of my Husband Hunter series from Kensington. Book 1: The Husband Hunter’s Guide to London, is available now. It’s the story of disgraced Viscount Hazelwood, and London newcomer, Jane Fawkener, daughter of a missing British agent. Together they must face society and foreign spies to discover the truth about Jane’s father and find a home in each other.

You’ll find more about the series here:  http://www.kensingtonbooks.com/book.aspx/35723

Coming in July is Book 2 of the series: The Lady’s Guide to Property and Passion. Book 2 is a cold case mystery, assigned to Napoleonic Wars veteran Captain Harry Clare. When Harry discovers a simple-minded blind man who may be the only witness to a murder, he also meets Lucy Holbrook, the man’s caretaker. Lucy’s just inherited her father’s inn. Her aristocratic friends push her to sell it and leave her home. Lucy’s torn between the London life her father wanted for her and her oldest friend from childhood, blind Adam. Her loyalty to the blind man soon brings a dangerous enemy to her doorstep, and it takes Harry and Lucy’s love to overcome Adam’s enemy and solve the mystery that has shaped her life. I love the cover Kensington gave this story, which perfectly captures Lucy.

If you are in a spring mode, a free download of my early RITA finalist book Sweet Bargain is available here.  https://katemoore.authorreach.com/lead/5f0676cb

Happy reading. Happy Spring.

Once again, Ms. Alta Hensley has penned a story that is spine-tingling, on-the-edge-of-your-seat, I can’t look, but I can’t look away page-turning tale.  There is a unique cast of characters, some you will hate, some will have you hot and bothered, and some, you just aren’t sure about.   The characters and situations are explicated detailed.  The story is not for those who want wine and roses with a sweet storyline.  The story is raw, edgy, dirty, painful, intense, explicit and erotic.   If you don’t like a splash of shock, a dash of taboo, and a heavy dose of sex, then don’t take a sip of this TOP SHELF cocktail.

Alec is one of the owners of Spiked Roses, he has done well for himself, still single, but doing well financially.  He is shocked when he hears from his former business partner and longtime friend, Rhett Knox.  In a letter, he asks Alec to please take Makayla to their lake house and keep her safe.

Makayla, twenty-years-old, had just come to New Orleans and was to start working as a hostess in the club.  The letter brings up old demons, ones that Alec walked away from but once again; they have made their presences known and not only will it affect Rhett, but Makayla and her innocence.
It all revolves around the long-standing Iron Colt Brotherhood, which has been around since before the civil war, and most of the well-to-do families were born into it and passed down from generation to generation in families like it was for Rhett and Alec.

“I know that being part of the society can help make every man’s—who is willing to pay the price—dreams to come true.  The power of the men involved, the connections, the favors that can be granted.  Politicians have gained their positions because of the brotherhood.  Investments that have formed multi-billion dollar companies from nothing originated out of the brotherhood.  If a member asks for a ‘favor,’ then the favor is granted by the other members of the brotherhood.  But no favor comes for free.  For every favor you ask, you have to put your name on a rock that goes into a large urn.”

“That every a year, rocks are pulled, and the names on those rocks have to participate in a ritual of some kind.  A ritual that could be deadly. “

Rhett will leave his most precious item, his sheltered daughter, Makayla, in the care of Alec because he refuses to allow her to be part of the ritual when her name is drawn and instead, forfeits himself.  But will that be good enough?

Alec and Makayla at the lake house are attracted to each other, and he is fighting his desires to claim her. For Makayla, she wants Alec, and their desires will take over.  Alec is old enough to be her father, he and her father were business partners, and he should resist, yet she wants this too.  What they have at the lake house is sweet, but that is going to change because of her impetuous decision, the very one these men are trying to protect her from.

Makayla can’t let her father’s life remain in jeopardy, and she will take off to try and rescue him, and the story will take on a matter of life and death danger.  Now it isn’t only Rhett, but Makayla who will be part of the ritualistic games.  Will Alec be able to save them, and what will be the cost of returning to the Brotherhood?  Six women are going to be sold off to the highest bidder as slaves, and their Masters are allowed to do whatever they chose, for the women, they will endure a living hell of humiliation and pain.

“There was no Makayla and Alec.  There was only Master and slave.  It decimated all that was good left inside.  All that was left was evil as the demons watching on.  All that was left was rape, conquer, demand, hate, and hope.  A dark, awful, alluring hope that if we played along, maybe—just maybe we could save my father and walk out of her alive.”

The rituals of the Brotherhood are all a game to many of them, and that is why Alec walked away.  The treatment of the six women and six men, one of whom will die, all for greed and power.  Will Alec, Rhett, and Makayla survive the ritual and walk away?  If they do, what will become of them when this ordeal is over?

“To have to sit at a table and wish for another man’s death turned me into the living and breathing Devil—evil, sinister, and a pure monster.”

Meet the "Queen of Shadow" by Suz deMello (@suzdemello #futuristic #romance)

One of the most common and disliked questions readers ask writers is "Where do you get your ideas?" Quite honestly, we don't always know. Sometimes it's obvious--the germ of a story I wrote for Harlequin/Silhouette under a different pen name, His Baby, Her Heart, came from a magazine article about in vitro fertilization I read in a medical office waiting room.

But most of the time, the line from idea to story is not so clear.

I wrote Queen of Shadow when I was living in Thailand. I was attempting to recover from a particularly traumatic time in my life. My father had died in 2002 after a two-year-long bout with cancer. My best friend and her husband killed themselves in 2005 in an incomprehensible double suicide. My eldest brother had died in 2006 after a year-long fight with, again, cancer. I now understand that I had experienced a nervous breakdown without knowing it, desperately flailing about to keep my life together as everything fell apart. But under the stress, my marriage had failed, also.

Some believe that "wherever you go, there you are," meaning that running away doesn't solve problems. But for me, it does. Physical distance often results in emotional distance, and leaving helps me gain objectivity, perspective and detachment.

After spending a couple of months in Europe, I traveled to Thailand and made a nice life for myself in Chiang Mai. As I settled into the structured serenity I

created, I found myself able to write again after a prolonged absence--all the trauma had created a writer's block about the size of Gibraltar.

I had seen a science fiction movie about ten years before that had posited a planet strictly divided into bands of light and darkness. It wasn't very good, but the concept had stuck with me, and I decided to write my own take on what such a planet would be like.

Thus was born Queen of Shadow, a full-length, 55K+ word novel. Here's the blurb:

Looking for the next GoT? Here you are.

My little studio apartment in Chiang Mai,
where I wrote Queen of Shadow
A brave queen struggles to control divided kingdoms on a terraformed planet thirty thousand years in the future.

Janus is a planet which lacks both tilt and spin, and its Shadowlands are the pewter band of dusk dividing the violently hot Lightside of the planet from its Darkside, imprisoned by eternal night. Because of the peculiar conformation of the planet, birthrates are low and indiscriminate mating encouraged.

Audryn, Queen of Shadow has reached that time in her life when she must choose a king to rule with her or fail to bear an heir, casting not only her realm but all of Janus into chaos. Despite her duty, she is reluctant to share power, even a bit distrustful. Janus’ nobles vie for Audryn’s hand. Although she enjoys trysting with all her suitors, none seize her heart.

Then Storne, the warrior Prince of Darkness, arrives to claim her as his bride. Will his masterful ways allure or repel the willful Queen?

And a sexy little snippet (NSFW) to brighten your day:

Although I believed I could trust Storne, I couldn’t stop the nervous flutters in my belly. I occasionally allowed myself to be dominated by Rall and Parron as a change from the norm, and because their loyalty was absolute. Each would give his life for me.

But Storne wanted the throne, wanted his blood and bone to rule even after our deaths, or so I surmised. He did not hesitate to kill in order to win; what stopped him from taking me against my will?

And my will was strong. After learning that someone that we had trusted had plotted to kill my family—and had succeeded—had seemingly strengthened my unwillingness to hastily make the choice that must be made.

My worries must have showed, for he asked, “What’s wrong, Audryn?”

He slid his fingers out of my pussy and laid his hand on my belly. His gray eyes were steady, his gaze fixed on my face.

I breathed deeply. “I want you, but—"

“I won’t take advantage of the situation.”

I sighed. “I hope you are not insulted.”

His brows raised. “Your decision is momentous and final. I can afford to wait.” His voice oozed confidence.

“You are sure you are the best candidate.”

“Yes.” He leaned closer and purred against my ear, “I’m bigger, stronger, tougher and I don’t look like your great-grandpa."

I giggled.

He chuckled, a deep, sexy growl of a sound and bit my lobe. His fingers again busied themselves inside my pussy.

"Three Days From Hell: Kushiel's Assassin" Excerpt From Mystic Realms

Hello there! I hope you're enjoying your weekend. This has been an exceptionally busy month, with "Mystic Realms" only 2-weeks away, and on pre-order right now, we're all hustling to get the word out about it. There are so many great stories in this set, and each one is very different. Believe me, you do not want to miss this one! So, I'll get right to it. This is a short excerpt from my contribution to the set, "Three Days From Hell: Kushiel's Assassin." I'm sharing it in my new Facebook group today, and thought decided to share it with you as well. Let me know what you think in comments.

“Your key.” The manager handed Anitra a small envelope with the keycard. “Suite 333.”

She accepted it and walked to the elevator. She could not help wondering about the sudden glint in the manager’s eyes when he saw the suite number, but decided not to ask. The night had already been strange enough, and she wasn’t sure she wanted an answer. She gathered Rumor and his things and walked away without a word, the added bonus of Ms. Lillian allowing her to charge whatever she needed to the room rendering her speechless.

Anitra smiled as she stepped onto the elevator. Ms. Lillian’s exclusive matchmaking business, “Heaven’s Touch,” was revered and respected by any and everyone with money and power – those who knew about it, that is. No matter how grateful she was, Anitra still hoped to God her benefactor was not trying to hook her up with some clown.

She needed a man’s drama like she needed a bullet in her back a few hours ago. Plus, most men seemed intimidated by her…unless they were trying to kill her, that is. She was a big girl, and she had always been a fighter, but she had never been more frightened than she had been when she smelled the sulfur from that bullet aimed at her. Right now, she was just tired and... lonely. The voice in her head that never seemed to keep silent long enough spoke up. Matchmaking is what she does. Getting hooked up with a man is a hell of a lot better than running for your life.

She blew an errant strand of hair out of her face. As long as there was no one in her room, suite, whatever, waiting to kill her, it was all good.

Just before the door closed, Rumor whimpered and a huge hand slid inside, causing the doors to automatically stop. Heat rushed through Anitra’s body like a furnace. She glanced around to see if anyone else had been affected by the unseen force, but apparently, she was just having a young adult hot flash. At least that was what she thought until the elevator doors opened to reveal the source of titillating heat.

She covered her heart with her right hand as she gazed into the smoky gray eyes of very possibly the most gorgeous man she had ever seen in her twenty-nine years. Not a pretty man, but breathtakingly beautiful in his masculinity. Testosterone rolled off him in waves, yet Rumor did not say a word. Testosterone in any amount usually resulted in low-pitched growls and vicious, territorial barking from her four-legged best friend. Anitra glanced down at him to make sure he was still breathing.
He was.
Next, she looked behind her to find every pair of eyes on the elevator glued to the smokin’ hot new arrival. Of course, they all appeared to be more terrified than excited. As usual, she was the odd one out.
