Happy Halloween, Blessed Samhain, Marry All Hallow's Eve!

In the spirit of Halloween today, I am going to share some of my favorite scary stories and fun Halloween reads! I hope everyone gets lots of parent tax from their kids, and if there's no kids, go treat yourself! It's Halloween!

I was always one to read true haunted locations stories, and being here in Ohio there’s many of those floating around. In fact there are five Haunted Ohio books with over 500 stories of haunted places from around the state.

If you’re into true ghost stories, these will not disappoint.

If you’re looking for a touch of fantasy, these stories still give me chills and I first read them back in third grade. Not to mention the artwork which is enough to give people nightmares to this day.

Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark collects folklore and urban legends to chill readers to the bone and be certain you won’t sleep at night!

They are written for kids, and yet even as an adult I still love them.

Want even more fiction?

I adore Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire series. They were the novels that inspired True Blood, and honestly were much better than the TV series.

I’ve heard the Anita Blake novels are fantastic as well, still have yet to read them, but you can’t go wrong with novels that have received such high praise.

What is YOUR favorite Halloween read?

Drop into Las Vegas this #Halloween Meet the #Soulgirls at the #Paranormal Casino

Minion is the imp seen bouncing around behind the scenes of the Arcana Royale's Midnight Mystery Lounge. The fuzzy little demon with her cat-like face and prankster sense of humor delights in playing with the dancers clothes, cosmetics, and choices. Despite her mischievous nature, she's fiercely loyal and has her favorites. Pandora's exodus in Into the Spotlight has started a domino effect, and Minion's pouting. To get her to stop, Heidi challenges the little beast to make a list of why you shouldn't miss the show.

Here's what she came up with:

The costumes! You have never seen so much bling. I wish I could wear the headpieces, but some of them weigh 30 pounds--you know, that's more than me!

Into the Spotlight

The shoes! I want Pandora's shoes. They're these beautiful, shimmery creations that glitter and catch all the light in the room. If I could find a way to snitch them, I totally would. Pandora gave them to Roseatre, and Roseatre gave them to Kiki...hmm...is there a pattern there?

Taking the Stage

The music! Most of the shows feature their own original score. The tiger show's music isn't as splashy as some of the other performances, but it has these beautiful white tigers. But when Kiki takes over, she let me help plan what she's going to do and it's **BLEEP**  I bet you can't wait either!

Waiting in the Wings

The dancers, of course, they're the best reason. The girls are all awesome. But don't tell anyone...Kiki is my favorite!

Of course, the best reason to go to the show and see what's happening? If you don't, I'll stick you into one of Heidi's puzzle boxes. *grins* I like her puzzle boxes.

Who can blame Richard for his half-century-long bad mood? For fifty years he’s been waiting for his bride to get over the spat that sent her storming away from the safety of his territory. For fifty years, he’s missed everything about her—even her whimsical challenges to his authority.

It’s time for her to come home, but when he gets a lead on her whereabouts, he’s stunned. She’s dancing in a glitzy, gaudy Las Vegas show. And her memory of him has been wiped clean.

Kiki finally has the opportunity to headline at the Arcana Royale, but she’s not sure she’s happy about it. Especially when a dark, handsome stranger arouses forbidden passions from deep inside of the fog of her lost past.

Richard has been granted only three days in hostile territory to free his Kiki from the curse binding her mind.

Only one problem. When Kiki remembers Richard, she may not forgive him, but if she never remembers, she'll never be free.

Warning: Contains an arrogant-as-hell vampire prince who will stop at nothing to get the girl he loves, an unpredictable showgirl who loves to party, and scorching sex that drives them both wild.

Princess Mary and the "Tommy Tin"

When I was visiting Harewood House last month, I learned about the Princess Mary, daughter of George V and therefore aunt of Queen Elizabeth II, who, when she was 16-17 and the country was beset by the "Great War," wanted to do her part to help the war effort. Her idea was to see that every soldier in 1914 had a Christmas gift from her—a gold metal box filled with treats such as cigarettes and playing cards.

I recognized this box when I saw it at Fortnum & Mason the day before I left England. In this box you will find two chocolate blocks and a miniature set of playing cards (no tobacco!). But the treasure is really the memory of a young princess who wanted to do her share in a war that proved very costly in terms of Britain's brave young men.

The card inside:

Fortnum's at War

What came to be known as "The Great War' broke out in August 1914. Princess Mary, the daughter of King George and Queen Mary, announced her plan in October 1914 to send a Christmas gift to

"every sailor afloat and every soldier at the front".

Over the years of conflict, two and a half million Christmas gift tins, filled with treats and comforts, were sent to those on active service.

Fortnum & Mason was one of the most significant suppliers of food and equipment to British officers during the First World War. Parcels filled with a taste of home were sent out daily to service personnel on the Western Front and the Mediterranean, to ships' companies, and to the adventurous members of the Royal Flying Corps and its reincarnation as the Royal Air Force.

Through the International Red Cross, Allied Prisoners of War received comfort in the shape of a Fortnum's parcel, as proof of the devotion of those loved ones in Blighty. Wherever they served,

'a Fortnum's delivery brought the warmth of home.'

To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War, Fortnum & Mason has created this version of Princess Mary's tin.

Named 'Tommy's Tin', in homage to the historic soubriquet for British servicemen, it contains chocolate and specially-designed playing cards. It is presented as a mark of gratitude to the men and women of the British Armed Forces serving away and in danger.

1914-2014

P.S. She later married the Viscount Lascelles (who later became Earl of Harewood), who was himself a soldier in the First World War. She went on to live the rest of her life at Harewood, which you can see here: https://www.pinterest.com/susanaaut…/susanas-harewood-house/

If you are interested, I am giving away the above prize on the Belles' Launch Party Page. All you have to do is post an ornament for my Christmas tree!

Spooky and Sexy Greetings!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Yes, I'm aware that Halloween isn't actually until the 31st, however for some of us it's all of October.  I am running (and maybe walking a bit) in a Halloween themed 5K tomorrow and I have two photoshoots scheduled for next weekend so I am in the spirit so to speak.  I've just finished The Pale Emperor, a paranormal M/F erotic romance that I will be adding to an anthology with some awesome paranormal authors.  I've also just finished edits on Kendall's Promise soon to be released from Evernight!  Lots of things happening in the writing world, and it's important to reflect.  Halloween weekend is actually my one year publish-versary and in that time since Truthful Silence I've had three books published and have two more coming out soon.

On a personal note this year has been wonderful and full of growth (even if it didn't appear that way at the time) and I've my supportive friends, family, colleagues, and readers to thank for that!  I grew up in a Wiccan home and I suspect largely due to that, Halloween (Samhain) will always feel like New Years to me.  Strive and believe to achieve people, I wish the absolute best for each and every one of you in the upcoming year!

A Romance for Christmas @kayelleallen #HolidayRomance

A Romance for Christmas
A cop at the door on Christmas Eve brings an unexpected gift.
It's Christmas Eve, and the end of a year in which everything Dara loves has been lost. Everything but her little girl and a fierce determination to survive. When a cop brings Christmas to her door, he brings another gift she never expected to get.

Excerpt

Dara was gaining strength daily, and would finish therapy the first week of January and return to work. Disability paid for the basics - lights, phone, water, trash collection, and she'd never bought anything on credit, refusing to dig herself into a hole she'd never escape once it got started.
She went to the closet and pulled down a box with a ball, crayons, paper, and three books. A friend had brought over a few things as well. This wasn't the grand Christmas Dara had wanted for her daughter, but all the other valuables had been sold. There was nothing left but her wedding ring.
She didn't wear it. Removing it had been part of saying good-bye to Jack. People said it would help, and it had. Sort of. But not much.
Dara sank into one of the kitchen chairs and put her face in her hands.

Sometime later, when the doorbell rang, she grabbed a paper towel and dried her eyes. The clock over the stove said nine o'clock. Who would be calling at this hour on Christmas Eve? She stuffed the wet towel in her robe pocket on the way to the door.

Samhain is Coming...Vampires and all

As an author of Celtic/Paranormal/Romance novels, my favorite holiday is Samhain, the Celtic festival which gives us our Halloween traditions. Samhain, pronounced SOW-uhn, is the Celtic New Year, October 31st or November 1st. Samhain falls between the old year and the new, it is a day without time. Spirits of the dead and supernatural beings easily cross into our earthly dimension on this day, since the veil between worlds is at its thinnest.

In our modern Halloween celebration, one of our favorite supernatural creatures are vampires. The Celts have their own versions of vampires, the Manx Leanan Sidhe and the Scottish baobhan sith.

From Manx and Irish mythology the Lhiannan Shee (lannan-shee) and the Leanan Sidhe (lan-awn shee) are vampiric fey women. A Leanan Sidhe is a succubus muse, targeting poets or musicians. She inspires her victim to create a great masterpiece by inflaming them with the creativity of an entire lifetime at once. Then, she drains them of all that artistic energy, so the men die shortly after. The Lhiannan Shee, drain their mortal lovers of their blood and store it in a red cauldron in an underwater cave. Something about that struck me as funny. So I wrote a paranormal/comedy romance about a Leanan Sidhe on the Isle of Man, A Fine Cauldron Fish. This short, single title comedy romance takes place on the island of the Celtic pagan god ManannĂ¡n mac Lir.

It's summer on the Isle of Man and Andrew is looking for hot girls and good times. So when he meets the dreamy and seductive Margaid, he thinks he's hit the jackpot. There are only a couple of minor problems: Margaid lives in a cave under the sea, is invisible, and thinks that only Andrew's blood can save her from turning into a water horse!
But hey, whoever said love was perfect!? A Fine Cauldron Fish

Another Celtic vampiric fey is the Scottish baobhan sith (baa'-van shee), who wear green dresses and in some legends have goat hooves for feet. Like the Manx, Lhiannan Shee, they don’t have fangs, their nails extend like claws and they rake them down their lovers back to draw blood. They are known as the dancing vampires. I thought, what a great character for an erotica paranormal romance, and I wrote the six book Dancing Vampire series.

Ian captures Sorcha, giving his brothers a chance to escape. With the vampiric fey woman still in his grasp, Ian is saved by the rising sun. Sorcha's sisters vanish with the light of dawn leaving her trapped in the mortal realm. Ian is bewitched by the wild delights she offers and Sorcha can't resist the urges he stirs in her. But her wicked sisters and his highland brothers only want to attack and kill each other. Will Sorcha and Ian's sizzling passion prove strong enough to overcome the differences between human and fey? Dance of the Vampires Free on Amazon, B & N, I Store, I Tunes, & Kobo.

Murdina a vampiric fey is hunting for a man, but this time she wants love not blood. She spots Cameron just as a strong wind lifts his kilt, she takes a good look and decides he’s the one.

Cameron meets a mysterious beauty, who dances the Highland fling for him, and his blood boils for her. Soon Murdina and Cameron are doing more than dancing. But their time together is limited. Murdina’s fey sisters are crossing the portal to steal her back and probably kill him. Is their love strong enough to overcome the threat posed to Murdina’s heart and to Cameron’s life? Vampire Highland Fling

Calin has fantasized about the vampiric fey, Ever, since they danced a year ago. When they meet again he waste no time in claiming and capturing her. Once the sun rises, Ever can’t leave the earthly realm and is bound by fey lore to Calin. Though he has saved her from the sun, things get pretty hot in his arms. But she made a vow to her sisters to not leave them for a mortal man. She fights her feelings for Calin and seeks help from goddess Morrigan.

The goddess wants the tall, muscular mortal for herself. So she frees Ever to return underhill. It isn’t until Ever’s back with her sisters that she realizes her heart is still held captive by Calin. When Calin spurns Morrigan’s attentions, the goddess’s lust turns to vengeance. With the odds against him, will Calin escape the goddess’ clutches, get Ever back from underhill and figure out a way to be with the woman he loves. A Bonnie Vampire Dancer

Angus, comes upon the alluring fey woman again and despite the danger, he has to have one dance with her. From different worlds, fey and human, her sisters and his brothers threaten at every turn to keep them apart. Tearlag and Angus fight for a future for their forbidden love. One Dance With A Vampire

Valkyrie Vampire Ball

hen Mordak spots Tor, she burns for his touch but before she can steal a kiss, three Valkyrie land in front of him. When Mordak fights the Valkyrie and saves his life, he knows she's the woman for him. But can he win Mordak's love even though he's only human?
Mordak and her sisters search the highlands for men to dance with and drink from. The moment Mordak spots Tor, she burns for his touch and yearns for the taste of his lips in a lingering kiss. Before she can steal that kiss, three Valkyrie land in front of him. Mordak is not about to let the Norse blondes fly off with the man she chose. Valkyrie Vampire Ball

Some Vampires Shimmy

Gorgeous Full Moon, October Sky

Luna, our beautiful moon, fascinates me, and for a time I took a casual interest in learning about its phases and its intricate relationship to earth and our oceans. One of the benefits of living in the country is the vastness of a night sky that lets us enjoy the view of the moon and stars for as long as we’d like to linger.

The sky seemed to peel back layers the night of this stunning full moon, and so I grabbed my camera. I took these pictures on the front lawn of my home in southeastern Pennsylvania.

If I hadn’t seen this sky with my own eyes, and taken a series of photographs that included this one, I might have assumed the picture was created by a cover artist for a science fiction or urban fantasy novel. This stunning display greeted me outside my front door.

Fun moon facts about October:

October is the month of the Blood Moon, also called Hunter’s Moon or Travel Moon. The Blood Moon is named for the ancient custom of killing and salting common livestock before winter’s cold and snow made it impossible for families to feed their animals. Only the most vital livestock were cared for during those harsh months. In modern times we recognize the need to prepare for frigid temperatures by raking fallen leaves from our lawns, ‘winterizing’ our cars and houses, and deep cleaning our homes before the holiday season arrives.

The full Blood Moon rises at sunset Tuesday, October 27, 2015, three days after the astrological calendar moves into the sign of Scorpio. Since there will be no full moon for Halloween until 2020, Trick or Treat’ers will walk to the light of the waning full moon this year.  — Adele Downs

Treasured Find is coming soon! #preorder #shifters

I have a pre-order link and an excerpt for Treasured Find!
The Royal Pride, my multi-feline shifter series, returns bigger and better than ever on 11-11-15. If you've been following my writing since 2013, you might recognize this book. It released as my debut, Unexpected Find. I have since gotten rights back on it, and it's gone through a makeover.
From an author's point of view, it's been refreshing and satisfying to rewrite this book. Rafe and Jasmine's story has always held a special place in my heart. It's because of them that I started writing. From a reader's viewpoint, I've given more of what you asked for -- more story! And you can get your expanded version (over 75 pages of new material) on...PRE-ORDER for $0.99!

Okay, here are the details...

Royal Pride, book 1

Sometimes the greatest finds are unexpected.

After five centuries, Rafe Alexander knows what to expect from life—boredom broken by the occasional call from Shifter Affairs. No matter how mundane the job, he always accepts their plea for help. He knows what it’s like to lose loved ones to the shifter trafficking rings decimating their species.
But the task that takes him to West Virginia changes everything. A human is dead. A shifter child is missing. And the human female connected to both tragedies is hiding a secret.
He needs to discover the mystery surrounding her. But the felines he houses—lion, tiger and jaguar—want him to get close to her for another reason. Jasmine is special, both for how she affects him and for the treasure she’s been guarding.
And as danger mounts, he’s left balancing his desire for revenge and his need to protect. But the line between them isn’t always black and white, especially where his family is concerned.
NOTE: This book was previously released. It has been revised and re-edited.

Excerpt #1

“Don’t get any crazy ideas. I am not going out with any of your husband’s friends. No more blind dates, thank you very much.”

“You don’t need any help from me. Once you drop the ‘stay away from me’ glare you usually wear around members of the opposite sex, you’ll have no problem picking up a guy.” Cindy tapped a single finger against her chin. “We might even have to beat them off you, especially if you display your goods a little more.”

She tugged at Jazz’s shirt until the lacy edge barely covered her nipples.

Jazz gasped and slapped away her friend’s hands. She quickly righted her top and glared at Cindy. Jazz hated her goods. Her breasts were too big for her frame, but genetics was a crapshoot. You got whatever the DNA mixing bowl dished out.

“Stop it. I am not enticing any lewd perverts with a showing of my goods.”

Cindy raised her hands. “Just promise me you’ll keep an open mind.”

She bit back her sharp retort. Cindy meant well. It wasn’t her fault Jazz had to keep men at arm’s length. It wasn’t Jazz’s either, but those were the facts. Time for another lie. What was one more?

“Fine. The next hot guy who shows any interest in me…” I’ll ignore just like I did with the blond hunk Josh was talking with. She inwardly rolled her eyes at the ridiculousness of her lame fib. “will be the one I take home.”

“Now that’s an offer I can’t resist.”

Jazz pivoted. A wide expanse of muscle filled her vision. She followed the ridges of his stomach lower. His narrow waist met lean, denim-covered hips. Openmouthed, she stared at the growing bulge in his pants. An answering spark of arousal lighted within her. Shivers of awareness, the same ones that had skipped down her spine a few minutes ago, traveled from the hardening tips of her breasts to her clit. The bundle of nerves took on a heartbeat of its own.

She glanced into his face. Exotic, uptilted honey-brown eyes were framed by long blond lashes. Specks of color floated in those oddly bright eyes—gold, blue, green. Beautiful and downright captivating.

His full lips, parted slightly, glistened as if he’d licked them. She swiped her tongue across her suddenly dry ones.

“Am I hot enough for you?” He rubbed his thumb over the corner of her mouth. “Because I’m interested. Very, very interested.”

A little about Nancy…
A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there’s a knight in shining armor for every woman (or man), but you won’t find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is—love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone’s norm.

She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she’s the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she’s married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Her other interests include tattoos, animals, classic cars and all things spooky and sexy.

Night's Companion, a Perfect Hallowe'en Read

As we are approaching Hallowe'en, I thought I'd go back a bit to a horror release from last year. Night's Companion is a full-length novel you can really sink your teeth into. *wink*

Kord is sexy, controlling and just too hot for Michelle to resist beginning a torrid sexual tryst with him, even if he is her new boarder. Mysterious, charming and more than capable of fulfilling every fantasy Michelle has ever had, she finds it easy to ignore the questions others raise about Kord’s odd behavior. When both of their violent pasts collide in their conjoined present, Michelle’s very life will hang in the balance as Kord struggles with a horrid choice: save Michelle or protect his true identity; lose his human lover or expose his true nature.

Excerpt:

Later that night, still costumed, Michelle rapped lightly on Kord’s door before opening it and walking in. It was her routine, their routine, and Kord was waiting, as always, just inside the door. He smiled broadly as his eyes took in her costume and he immediately enveloped her in his arms and kissed her deeply.

“Nice costume,” he commented.

Michelle was dressed as a vampire, wearing a floor length black dress with a long hooded robe over it. The robe was lined in red. She had long black gloves on that reached to her elbows. She too had gone heavy on the makeup, her face very pale, her eyes dark and her lips shockingly red. The tips of her vampire fangs nestled against her lower lip, barely visible unless she smiled. They were fairly expensive, molded fangs that adhered to her canines with denture paste. They were surprisingly solidly in place; she had eaten a candy bar earlier and had not loosened them.

She shrugged and then smiled, fully exposing her vampire teeth.

“I thought I’d bite you back for a change,” she teased.

“Hilarious,” he responded mirthlessly.

Michelle squeezed his ass cheeks playfully.

“Ah, come on. I thought it was funny.”

“Yes, it is very funny to poke fun at my teeth. It’s not like I’m self-conscious of them or anything.”

His tone was teasing now, despite his chastising words and Michelle smiled again.

“Want me to blow you with these on?”

“Absolutely,” he chuckled.

He kissed her deeply as he pushed his prominent erection against her. She felt his tongue moving over her fangs and he groaned and clutched her tighter. Her costume turned him on and Michelle grinned devilishly inwardly as she ran her tongue over his teeth, knowing how much he liked it. As her tongue caught on the tip of one of his canines, she quickly pulled it back and winced. She then leaned back to see his face, her lips pulled down into a slight frown.

“Have you ever thought about having your teeth filed down?”

He let go of her then and stepped back. Michelle instantly regretted her question and was about to apologize when Kord spoke, his expression heavy and dark.

“Of course I have but… my teeth are as much a part of me as anything else. Like my name. It has been suggested that if I change my first name along with my last that maybe Leila would not find me so readily. But Konrad is the name I was born with. It’s mine, bestowed upon me by my parents and I refuse to let her take that from me as well.”

Knowing she had hit a nerve, Michelle stepped forward and splayed her hands on Kord’s chest. Her apologetic eyes met his.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to insult you. Your teeth don’t bother me, they are just unusual. It’s something to get used to, that’s all, and I’m more than willing to take the time to get used to them.”

He nodded solemnly but did not reply to her. Michelle smiled exaggeratedly fully exposing her fake fangs for him.

“Do mine bother you?”

Kord smiled. “No, they’re hot. And so is the lisp you have with them.”

Michelle feigned shock.

“Lispth?” she questioned innocently, “I have a lispth?”
Kord laughed.

“You’re fucking mental sometimes.”

“Look who’s talking. You used the word ‘bestowed’. Seriously, how old-fashioned is that? Were you born in the middle ages or something? Maybe I should call you Sir Kord.”

Kord firmly grabbed her plump buttocks and pulled her against him tightly.

“I’d like it if you called me sir.”

“I bet,” she cooed.

Leaning forward he ran his tongue from her chin to her ear. After quickly nipping her ear gently, he whispered into it, his voice husky.

“Can I have that blowjob now?”

Smiling and maintaining eye contact with him, Michelle slowly sank to her knees before Kord, her gloved fingers already unbuttoning his jeans.

EXCERPT
She wound her arms around his shoulders. Reason gave way to want. Intention melted before the heat of reality. She wanted Kenz. Now. Tomorrow. Forever. His kiss cemented that truth in her mind.

“I will turn a hose on you if I have to,” Guardian said in a wry tone.

Kenz growled, a deep rumbling noise that originated in his chest, but pulled himself away and stepped back. His breathing was ragged. His pupils had dilated wide enough to almost turn his tawny amber eyes black.

Letha stood on wobbling legs with her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides. She was two seconds from grabbing Kenz and continuing.

“You can keep denying your reaction based on some misplaced mundane need to be modest or you can give in.” Guardian came around her desk and leaned against it. “I suggest you give in because Roman and Kenz appear very prepared to convince you.”

Both men stepped closer to her, flanking her, cutting off her escape. If she wanted to escape. Being sandwiched between them had her libido doing somersaults. She was seconds from ripping off her clothes.

To date, no man had ever gotten this kind of reaction out of her. Not even close. But two men had. Two men who, according to Guardian, were meant for her. She’d asked for loyalty and devotion. From the way Roman and Kenz stared at her, as if they might devour her any second, these two could give her that. But two…

Letha nodded. “Fine.”

What happened to September? I have no clue other than I missed it. Somehow it passed me by like a blur. We were out and about this morning and it was sleeting! Yes, just outside Toronto we had sleet. And it's doing it again now. I. Hate. Winter. There are so many people that love winter. I'm just not one of them. It seems the older I get the more I dread it. Years ago, I went off the road a few times in bad snowy road conditions. Perhaps that's why I despise it so much. Anyway, the only positive thing for me and the chilly months is wine and a cozy, crackling fire. Snuggled up with a good book.

The other thing I have to look forward to is a March release with Loveswept, Random House. My MMA story comes out March 29. Two days before my dad's 93 birthday - just a sidenote :D

After The Hurt is about Tank, a retired due-to-injury MMA fighter, and Pepper, a woman coming to terms with a major life upheaval and how she dealt with it, and their fight for love. I have no blurb for it yet, but I do have a cover. So this is one of the first COVER REVEALS!!

After The Hurt is available for pre-order now.

I also have a new indie release that came out in September. Love Cowboy Style is the sequel to Passion Cowboy Style. All my books are available at Amazon
and Love Cowboy Style is also at Kobo What do you think of the cover? I LOVE it.
Remember, I have a newsletter signup at my website. I won't spam you, and will have news, fun stuff and freebies when I do send out news! www.shanagray.com

But that's not all! No siree. I have a cover for my BLAZE too. It's coming out December. And what better than for a smoking hot romance to take place in Hawaii. Even better is you get another story by Leslie Kelly also set in a tropical location. I was so thrilled to be in this duo Unrated! Blaze with her.
My story is called More Than A Fling - also available for pre-order at all retailers. Including Harlequin

Lana Hunter has a few precious days in Hawaii before a big business meeting—time to relax and indulge herself. But indulgence takes on a whole new meaning when she meets dishy South African Grant Rankin. It's the perfect fling—brief and wicked. After days exploring volcanoes and nights exploring each other, how will Lana ever return to real life?

Halloween is Coming - a Perfect Time for a Ghost Story

I love this time of year. Pumpkin-flavored goodies are everywhere. The changing color of leaves are spectacular. And Halloween! Time to run to the attic to pull out the many boxes of decorations to spook up the house. Perhaps, I get a wee bit obsessive about it.

Nah, you can never have too many Halloween decorations.

Two more weeks of Halloween festivities are ahead. Although I usually host a big party, this year Halloween is on a Saturday and I'm going out to celebrate one of my favorite nights. Also, I'm eagerly awaiting the 13 nights on ABC Family. Addams Family, Beetlejuice, Hocus Pocus are all favorites. Plus, it's a great excuse to watch my favorite vampire movies and reread my favorite Edgar Allen Poe stories.

What are your favorite things about this time of year? Halloween?

In the spirit of Halloween, I had fun writing a short ghost story in my Bed, Breakfast, and Betrayal series. Here's the first one: Betrayed.

Betrayed

A Ghost Story

A short ghost story in the Bed, Breakfast, and Betrayal series by Lisa Carlisle.

Once thinking it was a curse, Sybil Channing now uses her gift to communicate with spirits as a lucrative way to make a living. She dubs herself a ghost whisperer and plays up her role as an eccentric woman who can talk to the dead. When she receives a call from a bed and breakfast with an issue with a ghost, Sybil thinks it will just be another easy, nice-paying gig. Sure, there’s a bit of a mystery about women becoming ill, but nothing to scare her off. Yet when she arrives, what she encounters is far more dangerous than she anticipated.

A kiss is just a kiss...or is it?

This is the somewhat cynical quote I sent along in response to Tim's last post:

The kiss originated when the first male reptile licked the first female reptile, implying in a subtle, complimentary way that she was as succulent as the small reptile he had for dinner the night before.  F. Scott Fitzgerald

From the reading I've done, best guess is that the kiss originated with what is referred to as the "food kiss."  Way before anyone had invented jarred, pureed baby food, adults and older children would be chewing food, then to keep a hungry baby happy, would press their lips against the baby's and force the pre-masticated food into the baby's mouth.  Presumably baby liked the taste, and would get nourishment as well as attention.  Soon after that, when a baby or young child cried, just pressing lips together would comfort the child.

How that morphed into the romantic sensation we all know and love is anyone's guess.  Maybe it is related to Fitzgerald's quote.  But somehow people all over the world do something that no other animal on earth does: we touch lips for a multitude of reasons.

I hug and kiss good friends every time I see them.  Most I don't kiss on the lips, but on the cheek, a more formal gesture still related to the kiss.  I was brought up that seeing family always involved what I referred to as "running the gamut," where I had to hug and kiss everyone there.  With 9 aunts and 9 uncles, along with 22 cousins, there was a whole lotta kissin' going on! My husband was brought up the same way, so our kids are also "touchy-feely", at least with the relatives.  Of course, I had one uncle who was such a sloppy kisser that I wondered how my poor aunt could stand it.  He used to kiss everyone on the lips, and it was like he licked his lips first...or drooled.  Ew!  I prefer not dry lips, but at least slime-free lips...especially with a relative.

I did notice that while I was caring for both of my parents during their time of dying, both of them would turn their heads to kiss me on the lips...especially my mother.  She had always trained me to turn my head, so as not to spread diseases.  But with old-age dependency, she wanted to kiss my lips.  It was almost as if her lips missed the contact, so she wanted to get it from anyone she could.  The last time I saw her alive, right before I left I kissed her lips.  I treasure that memory.  Now my widowed mother-in-law is failing in health, and my husband and her other children, after years of training, turn their heads.  But I meet her kiss with my lips, and though she never says anything about it, I think she also has "lonely lips." Such a small gesture, but it seems to mean so much.

As for romantic kissing, phew!  I'm a huge fan.  And let's not get into just how many places on the body feel good when kissed! The shame of a long-term relationship is that you don't "neck" anymore.  No need to just hug, kiss, fondle and explore, when there's a bed waiting for you to enjoy.  But sometimes it's fun just to do the heavy petting thing.  Right?

Set-up for excerpt: In my free-read novel, Prescription For Love, Tanora has a secret that has kept her from dating men for 2 years.  When Enrique Reyes, the doctor who is attracted to her, gets the story from her, he is moved enough to tell her that he will let her lead in their beginning relationship. He is sitting in a chair, while she is standing.

“You don’t have to do this, Tanora.  But I promise to keep my hands to myself.  Even though I want to touch you, more than anything else in the world right now.  I won’t.  You are in control.  Do what you want.”
She gave him a small smile as she thought of what it was that she wanted to do.  Long-dead feelings seemed to be waking up, but she wasn’t going to rush anything.  And he wanted her to take her time.  So she did.
She leaned over slowly, and used both of her hands to softly caress the sides of his face.  While she kept one hand still, she used the other to brush the curly black hair off of his face, and ran her fingers back onto his scalp, enjoying the warmth emanating from his head.  The hand that was still on the side of his face, slowly moved down, and she used her thumb to trace the lines of his lips, enjoying the soft, sensuous feel of them.
She lowered her head, and her lips gently brushed against his…once, twice…on the third touch, she leaned into it, and concentrated all of her being into her lips, as if they were the only body parts that she had.
She didn’t open her mouth…she kept up the gentle pressure of her lips on his.  She opened her eyes and smiled at the transfixed look on his face.  He opened his eyes as well.  She gently rubbed her nose against his, back and forth, and they breathed onto each others’ faces, while gazing deeply into each others’ eyes.
She brushed her lips against his again, and applied more force.  She leaned forward and opened her mouth slightly, to run her tongue around his mouth, tasting his lips, tracing their lines, enjoying the feel of the prickly hairs that had grown since he had shaved in the morning.
Her tongue made lazy circles around his mouth before she delicately poked it against his lips, mutely urging him to open his mouth…which he did.  She reached her tongue into his mouth, and began to brush against his tongue.  Their lips were still pressing together, harder now, and she inadvertently moaned, and leaned closer to him.
