Interviewing the Muses - Michael Mandrake On the Run - New Release

SLira: Greetings. Although there’s plenty of things for me to talk about, you know marriage equality in the US and Ireland, Caitlyn Jenner, 50 Shades and Grey. Yeah, there are blog topics, but I realized, I hadn’t chatted with my inner selves in quite a long time.
Well, at least in public.

*smirks*

Anyway, my inner selves, means my writing muses. And since Michael has a new book coming soon, I figured it was about time to talk with my male muse, Michael Mandrake. Hi Michael.
Michael Mandrake: Glad to be here, Sharita. It has been a moment, hasn’t it? Almost three years or more since we’d done this?

SLira: Yes, I’d say that is true. It’s also been a minute since we got a chance to write together. That other muse is kind of a pushy brod. *leers at BLMorticia*

Michael Mandrake: *laughs* Yes, she is that, but she is the wicked gal. We wouldn’t expect anything less from her would we?

SLira: Nope, not at all. So, tell the wonderful people out there about what makes up a Michael Mandrake book?

Michael Mandrake: Out of your three ‘selves’, I consider myself the complex one. I do gay male romance where all the characters are comfortable with their sexuality. For the exception of No Denying Sin, which I wrote with BLMorticia, all my men are gay and love it. They’re not always out the closet though, as is the case in Reconnection, but they are happy to wave the rainbow flag high. Another thing, since I like more complex, my stories are plot heavy; the more complex the better. Paranormals, cops and criminals, suspense, and soon a little sci-fi. *grins*

SLira: Yep, stories with you mean hours of research which is fine because that’s a sign of a good author. For N’awlins Exotica we’ve spent a lot of time in books about detective work and homicide. We’ve done vampires, and now, we’re doing a story about performance enhancing drugs’ effect on baseball. Tell the audience more about On the Run?

Michael Mandrake: Well, the On the Run story was inspired by baseball’s continuing fight to get PED’s and or steroids out of the game. I actually based it on Alex Rodriguez from the Yankees and the guy who swears to injecting him, Anthony Bosch. When watching his interview on 60 minutes, the story came to me. Why not write a book about a guy responsible for distributing PED’s being caught by a hitman? When he’s caught, theres sparks flying between them and add in a saucy female sidekick. Voila! On the Run was born.

SLira: Yes it was. And then we decided to change it into a series. *rolls eyes*

Michael Mandrake: *cocks eyebrow* Oh, you don’t like series now, hmm?

SLira: No, it’s not that, just wow. They’re hard as hell, especially when you have a load of characters. *cough cough* N’awlins Exotica. I've learned my lesson, though. Only introduce them if there’s a chance they’ll get their own book.

Michael Mandrake: *laughs* Very true. That happened a lot with N’awlins Exotica, but thank goodness, this one, the PROTEKT series, we have 3 books with a possibility of a one off for a lesbian book for BLMorticia. And the good thing is they won’t have to be read in order.

SLira: Well, tell us about PROTEKT?

Michael Mandrake: PROTEKT is a collection of books where the characters are part of a secret organization. They’re not superheroes, just regular men and women who were brought into this organization to bring down criminals and protect individuals that can’t do it themselves. The series can be read as standalones with the only connections being the character of the next book is introduced in the book previously. Since On the Run is book one, the lead MC in Closely Guarded is introduced in book two.

SLira: And just a note, we’d already done Closely Guarded, but never subbed it. When we found out about PRIDE publishing starting, we jumped at the chance.

Michael Mandrake: Yes we did and I’m glad. I’m really looking forward to re-doing that book.

SLira: Me too *groans* No, really I am, but these rewrites. *laughs* Anyways, we should wrap up, but please tell the good people what’s coming up for Michael Mandrake?

Michael Mandrake: Well, On the Run releases in October. I believe it will be up for pre-order in August. Other than that, I’ll be leaving BLMorticia to the 2nd part of No Denying Sin which is now titled, Living in Sin on her own. Then we’ll be getting together to write Hell Hath No Fury where we’ll pick up with Eli and Ryland. Speaking of Ryland, I’ll be doing the story with their vampire father, Gren Dumont. I hope we can finish that by Christmas. And then of course, Closely Guarded, and re-doing Vertigo as well.

SLira: *eyes bulge* Are you doing all this without me? You know that other muse and Rawiya want to write some more.

Michael Mandrake: Believe me, Shar, if I could I would. However, I suppose I’ll have to start being just as pushy. *sarcastic laughter*

SLira: Oh great. Okay then. Thanks for stopping by, Michael. Hope you enjoyed that, folks. Look for On the Run to be out in the fall and, if you don’t hear from me for a while, you’ll know why!

In addition to being a computer geek and a metalhead, Sharita loves live music, reading, and perusing the net for sexy men to be her muses. She’s also a founding member and contributor to the heavy metal ezine Fourteeng.net.

Blurb: Who would’ve thought that a British hitman would fall in lust at first sight with an American felon? It could become deadly for both.

Aiden Moriarty is a Florida ‘herbalist’ who works with a performance-enhancing drug used by many athletes. One of them is baseball star Ivan Salerno, who was caught using the drug and is now on the brink of getting suspended. Because of Ivan’s connections with a rogue mob boss, Aiden is taken into a witness-protection program, working along with baseball higher-ups until he testifies.

The mob boss, Augustine Ora, has hired former British military officer and his best hitman Devlin ‘Brit’ Crawford to do the job. Ora has instructed Devlin to go to Miami, kidnap Aiden and take him to the local airport to be transported to Havana, Cuba, to be executed by Ora’s top officers.

However, when Devlin receives the email, the pictures of the blue-eyed felon catch his eye and he is moved to go in a different direction. Instead of delivering Aiden to the airport, he has thoughts of taking him away and saving him from Ora’s wrath.

This move puts himself and Aiden, as well as his assistant, Miranda Ashley, in huge danger. Will Devlin keep Aiden safe despite the odds, or will he fail, causing Ora and his men to come after him?

Excerpt

“Let me get this straight, you want me to do what?” Aiden Moriarty gripped the arms of his chair tightly. His eyes bulged in surprise. “Go against−”

“Yes, Aiden, we need you to testify against Salerno so we can suspend him from baseball indefinitely.” Garrett Engle leaned forward in his chair and folded his hands on top of his desk. “It’s the best deal for you, Aiden, or it’s time in jail for impersonating a doctor and practicing medicine without a license. Take your pick.”

Aiden closed his eyes tightly and ran his hand through his hair. “Shit. Neither, Engle. You’d ask me to do this even after I gave you all the information I had on Salerno?”

“Yes we would, Moriarty. We’ve got our game to protect.”

“I don’t give a shit. We’re talking about my hide here. Damnit!” Aiden bammed the desk in frustration and petulantly folded his arms over his chest. “What the hell, Engle? I told you him and his boys were going to kill me. You promised me a hiding place, freedom…”

“And we’ve gotten you away from the feds, haven’t we? They’re cooperating because they want free tickets to the Yankees games and the World Series. They don’t give a rat’s ass about you and neither do we.”

Aiden bit the inside of his jaw and darted his eyes from left to right. Thinking of what Ora and his goons might do sent a chill up his spine. More than that, he was angry that Engle was suddenly turning on him. “You know what, listen. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on, right?” Beads of sweat pebbled on Aiden’s forehead and the heat swarmed around him. “You need me more than I need you. Salerno wouldn’t even be investigated right now unless you contacted me.”

“And you needed money to pay off Ora when you stupidly played high stakes poker with him.”

“Yes, but at what fucking cost? So I can testify against him and be a target for one of his henchmen to shoot me on sight? They’ll do it, you know. I know they will, mark my words.”

Engle sighed. “Well it’s either play with us or Ora. You testify against Salerno, we keep you safer and out of jail. You don’t and we bring you and Ora down together. The feds are after him, big time. If they can find a connection between all three of you it’ll make their year.”

Aiden smeared the moisture from his head. “Engle, there’s gotta be another way. I’ve turned over the documents, the text messages. I’ve done everything you asked.” Aiden was nearly in tears thinking of what Salerno and his mob boss friend would do to him without the protection of the US Marshals.

Engel relaxed back in the chair. His brown gaze met Aiden’s. “Yes you have, but we need your testimony to bring Salerno and others like him down for good. And we’ll keep you from getting hurt, as much as we possibly can. But you know…” Engle stopped a moment and shifted in his chair. “Accidents do happen.”

Aiden cocked an eyebrow and gulped hard. What accidents is he talking about?Things around the house or out in the streets, this he knew, but what other things or was Engel giving him a warning if he didn’t cooperate?

“Okay, yeah um, so when do I have to testify again?” Aiden hated this plan but he’d much rather deal with them than Boss Ora and his scary crew. He’d asked Salerno to back off but he and Ora were relentless. They’d stop at nothing to make sure Aiden was permanently shut up a lot sooner than later.

Aiden still had things he wanted to do; like meet someone who didn’t judge him based off his profession.

Instead, his main concern was whether or not he’d see his next birthday. At the moment, he didn’t think he’d receiving any birthday wishes or gifts by the end of the year.

Must be exhausting to have all of those stories roiling around in your head simultaneously. May you continue to keep up with all of them, and achieve the success that all of you (wink) deserve.
