Do You Hear What I Hear?

Okay, relax - this is NOT a Christmas post. I happen to be one of those people who prefers to take my holidays in sequence, thank you very much, so no fa-la-la-ing until AFTER Thanksgiving! I work in a retail environment, and the Christmas displays are driving me bonkers.

No,what this title refers to is VOICE. It's that nebulous, intangible thing that makes or breaks an author for a reader. The stronger the voice, the stronger the reader reaction. Impossible to define, unmistakable to recognize. Light or dark, funny or serious, folksy or collegiate, warm/chatty or dry. Think of your favorite author. How would you classify their writing - the tone, the effect? What resonates with you? When you try to convert someone else to your favorite author, how do you describe their writing? That's their voice. It's a style that carries over from book to book - how you can TELL something was written by so-and-so. No matter the story characters and setting, it just sounds like them.

Julie Garwood's historicals are like that. Love them!

I grew up  reading Mercedes Lackey. Especially Valdemar. I was immediately drawn into her informal style of writing and dialogue. When I started writing, it carried over so more than one RWA-chapter-contest judge commented "You sound like Mercedes Lackey." Which I took as a high compliment - she's my idol.

I mostly write fantasy romance - the Guardians of Light series for Samhain Publishing. I have a fabulous editor there, Linda, who loves my voice and has helped me develop it further. I'm one of those writers, though, that readers either love or hate. I do not inspire insipid reviews! <LOL> On one hand, awards and five-star reviews. On the other hand, the one-starred Goodreads reviewers who wish I'd take up knitting. (Same book, BTW. Strong voice = strong gut reaction.)

Now I've started writing contemporary paranormal romance - originally sold to Noble, but well, we all know what happened to them. *sigh* So "Marek's New World" went over to Tirgearr Publishing. There another editor loves my voice - enough to offer a contract. Now Marek couldn't be farther away from the Guardians, but my critique partners all agree that Marek still sounds like ME - in the rhythms, the cadence, the sentence structures.

And yes, "Marek's New World" will be coming out from Tirgearr Publishing sometime in the spring of 2014!

I've grown comfortable with/accepted my own writing voice - it flows naturally and makes my writing sing and dance and breathe. Even though there are people out there who don't like the song and will change the "channel" to someone more their style. I am so looking forward to winning hearts and pissing people off for years to come! :)

An Excerpt from Fierce:
“Do you-do you find men attractive?”
She shrugged.
“Do you find me attractive?”
Her focus snapped back to him. Sebastian. With his deep emerald eyes. The little prickles of an insistent day beard sprouting on his chin. The delicious curve of his jaw.
“Yes.” Yes. She found him attractive. More so than any man she’d ever met.
It scared her to death.
“I find you attractive, too, Katie. Very attractive. But I don’t want to ask you to do anything that makes you uncomfortable.”
Oh. There it was.
He was ending it.
A lump settled in her belly.
It was for the best. Really it was—
“So let’s take this slow, shall we?”
She gaped at him. “S-slow?”
He smiled and it warmed her heart.
Oh wait. It was his palm, skating across her shoulder, down her arm, cupping her breast. That was what warmed her.
“Stop me if this makes you uncomfortable.”
Oh, it made her uncomfortable. Sent sharp tingles along every nerve. Made her body start to soften and swell. Made her womb quiver.
But she wasn’t stopping him. No way.

“One would think you would know a little more about the lifestyle, considering the clientele you serve.”
Her frown became a glower. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
“I’ve been to your shop. I’ve seen your ‘BDSM section’.”
She frowned. “Why do you say it like that?” With air quotes?
“It’s hardly comprehensive.”
Her lips flapped. “It’s perfectly comprehensive.”
But he just snorted. “At any rate, it’s pretty clear you don’t understand a thing about the life, if you think it’s about a man bullying a woman. In fact, the Dom is not the one in control,” he said. “Not in a truly healthy D/s relationship. The sub calls the shots. Draws the lines. It’s a partnership, Bella, but the sub controls everything.”
She crossed her arms over her chest. “That is hard to believe.”
“I’d be happy to give you a demonstration.” The way he said it, with that quirk of his dark brow, the glint in his eyes, sent a sizzle of annoyance—and something else—through her.
“Fuck you, Holt.”
He grinned. “Okay.”
Goddamn it. She wasn’t sure which annoyed her more. His simmering sensuality or his goddamn teasing. Both were nearly irresistible. She hated that her lips tweaked in a smile. He would take a smile as encouragement, she was certain of it.
Sure enough, he took that last, lethal step and yanked her into his arms, sealing them together. His was hot, hard, huge. She tipped up her chin and glared at him, opened her mouth to say something else, something pithy and snarly. Something that would drive him away and give her room to fucking breathe—
But he didn’t give her time. No time to think of something pithy. No time to prepare. No time to shore up her defenses.
His mouth took hers. There was no other way to describe it. He covered her, smothered her, soaked her with his taste and his scent, suffused her with sensation. The rub of his lips over hers, the nibbles, the nips, the bold forays of his tongue, all scrambled her brain. His hands cupped her ass, rubbing her against his body, dragging her groin over his. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was aware that he was guiding her, moving her, walking her backwards in a relentless drive to crawl inside her.
And then she hit the wall.
Literally.
He backed her up against the wood paneling of the great room and pressed against her, hard. His cock was like a stone. A fat, throbbing stone. Almost painful against the tender flesh of her belly.
A flash of pure, unadulterated lust snarled through her. Because he was hard. For her.
Oh sure, he’d probably be hard if he was mouth fucking Kristi here against the wood paneling. Or Emily. Or Lucy.
Or Lassie.
But this one was for her.
She knew she should push him away. As goddamn aggressive as he was, Holt would respect a “No” from a woman he didn’t have a contract with. But something deep within her soul howled at the prospect of ending this. Just yet.
It was too fucking thrilling.
A chance like this would never come again. Not in a million years.
She could fuck him tonight. Have a crazy, dirty, sweaty fuckfest tonight and then tomorrow, blame it on the whiskey.
His lips released hers, but only so he could move to her neck, to work her, suckle her, nibble on the sensitive screaming skin there. Bella threw back her head so he had better access. She lifted her leg and wrapped it around his waist, plastering her slit against the monstrosity bulging at the juncture of his thighs.
“Shit,” he growled, undulating against her. Sizzles of delight washed through her in waves, concentric, fucking phenomenal waves. She scored his scalp in a rake of need.
“You’re not tying me up,” she grunted.
He lifted his head. His scorching gaze slammed through her, making her chit throb, her pussy clench. A warm wetness dampened her inner thighs. Her panties were soaked. “You’re in charge here, Bella,” he said, his voice breaking on the words. “You make the rules.”
“And no fucking whips and chains.” She hated that he chuckled, so she fisted his hair and yanked. “And no goddamn nipple clamps.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As though she’d reminded him she did, in fact, have nipples, he cupped her breasts and thumbed them, then brought his fingers together. Tightly. The pinch made her knees go weak. She hissed a noise, something between a sigh and a feral groan.
“You like that? You like it a little rough?” His voice was silky and smooth. Practiced. As though he’d said these words before. To thousands of women.
“Fuck you, Holt.”  She glared at him. When he grinned, laughed at her vehemence, she sank her nails into his scalp and wrenched him closer. This time she took his mouth. Ravaged his mouth. Fucked his mouth. She thrust in her tongue, explored, dominated him.
Yeah. He’d fucked legions. But he would remember her. He would fucking remember her.
She’d make damn sure of it.

A series? Love 'em? Leave em? What works? And why?

Book 1, KIBL
Building WORLDS is a Herculean task. And that exactly is what writing a series is.
Creating not only characters, but towns, communities of people, families perhaps, but groups of friends and most of all some sort of tie that allows them to stay together.
This is no mean feat.
It does require thought, databases, and an overriding arc of conflict!
Be careful, therefore, when you create—and when you read these! Dangers lie ahead.
How do you cope?
Book 2 KIBL
From the start, I recommend you keep all the following:
1. A database of your characters, main and not, names with dates of birth, hair and eye color, height, weight, any descriptives of body and psychological characteristics, too. Their major personality flaw and yes, their internal conflict. Yes, you forget!

2. A file of geographical descriptives, including photos to help you remember.

3. A list of references, online as well as in your own personal library, with page numbers if you must have them for future reference!  There is nothing like "knowing" a fact and realizing after you have gone to print that no, indeed, you mis-remembered that puppy.
Historical Prequel
to KIBL

4. A list of types of scenes so that you do not have the same type of act occurring in one book and then recurring in another. Examples:
Abduction anyone?
Gun fights, wrestling?
Any scene that is distinctive...and which your readers will become bored reading once again, only with different people this time!
Notice I did not list such scenes as kissing, love scenes, arguments. These are part and parcel of fiction, especially romance.

5. For any specific type of fiction, do yourself a favor and build a reference library on that issue. Why? You need to be as accurate about your details of murdering someone, as you do about geography and context of time and place.
Readers appreciate it and sales depend on it.
I will illustrate: I buy A LOT of books. Recently, I read one by a new NYT achiever. Her works were tauter and I bought one. Well, never again. I happen to know quite a bit about the place and the subject she took on in her novel and let me just say that by page 40 or so, she and I were done done done. She continues to be a NYT bestseller, but she will never sell another book to me.
Why?
She did not honor me...and thousands of others just like me (this is no small town I lived in nor was the subject one that is obscure) will never darken her door again.
And so now, for the proof that I might know what I speak of, I have written all these series:

My Regency series, The Stanhope Challenge, buy links at Amazon
My medieval series, Swords of Passion, buy links at Amazon:

My contemporary western BDSM series, KNIGHTS IN BLACK LEATHER, buy links at Amazon:

COVER REVEAL: A TWELFTH NIGHT TALE

Celebrate with me: the upcoming release of my Christmas novella, which, as part of Ellora's Cave's Blush Cotillion Christmas Traditions series, will be released digitally and in a print anthology with other Christmas traditions stories! What do you think of the cover? I have to say—I think it rocks!

A Twelfth Night Tale

by Susana Ellis
Cotillion Christmas Traditions
Release Date: November 21, 2013

About A Twelfth Night Tale

Without dowries and the opportunity to meet eligible gentlemen, the five Barlow sisters stand little chance of making advantageous marriages. But when the eldest attracts the attention of a wealthy viscount, suddenly it seems as though Fate is smiling upon them.

Lucy knows that she owes it to her younger sisters to encourage Lord Bexley's attentions, since marriage to a peer will secure their futures as well as hers. The man of her dreams has always looked like Andrew Livingston, her best friend's brother. But he's always treated her like a child, and, in any case, is betrothed to another. Perhaps the time has come to put away childhood dreams and accept reality.

Andrew has returned from the Peninsula with more emotional scars to deal with than just the lame arm. Surprisingly, it's his sister's friend “Little Lucy” who shows him the way out of his melancholy. He can't help noticing that Lucy's grown up into a lovely young woman, but with an eligible viscount courting her, he'll need a little Christmas magic to win her for himself. (178)

Excerpt
Jane was chatty as usual, prattling on about the wedding, her latest letter from Theodore and the coming events for the Christmas holidays.
“We are expecting you all at our house for Christmas dinner as usual,” Lucy broke in. “Mama has a new recipe for plum pudding and she’s anxious to see what you think of it.”
The Livingstons had been guests of the Barlows for every Christmas dinner since Mrs. Livingston’s death. Jane and Andrew’s mother had been a wonderful hostess and a great advocate for the Yuletide traditions, and after she had passed away, Mrs. Barlow had begun the practice of sharing the family Christmas with their good friends and neighbors. There was never a dull moment in a household with five such lively daughters as the Barlow girls, and the Livingstons were not allowed the luxury of brooding over the past during a time of year meant to be joyful.
“Yes indeed,” piped up Mr. Livingston. “Your mother sets a fine table and it’s always a pleasure to be among so many pretty young lasses, is it not, Andrew?”
“Most assuredly,” said Andrew, with an appreciative smile at Lucy. “If Miss Barlow here is any indication, the Barlow girls must be growing up quite agreeably.”
Lucy flushed. “You must come to the church tomorrow night for the Christmas Eve pageant,” she put forward. “My sisters and I are all in the play, and Jane will need an escort.”
Andrew raised his eyebrows. “You are all five in the play? I don’t recall so many females involved in the nativity.”
Lucy laughed. “I’m the director,” she said. “Laura plays the part of Mary, Lydia is one of the wise men, Louisa is a shepherd, and Lila is a camel.” She grinned. “The script originally called for domestic animals, but Lila being Lila, refused to settle for anything so mundane.”
“Who, then, is the Christ Child?” inquired Andrew after the laughter had subsided.
“Louisa’s cat, Beau,” Lucy told him. “We meant to use the Tadsens’ baby in the beginning, but he wouldn’t stay still and kept crying, so we tried several dogs and cats for the part, and Beau was the most cooperative.”
More smiles circled the table, and Andrew agreed that he would be pleased to escort Jane to the pageant.
“How could I possibly refuse? This production is certain to be the highlight of the county. You should accompany us, Papa,” he said, turning to his father.
“Perhaps I shall,” said Mr. Livingston.
Jane and Lucy excused themselves, leaving the two gentlemen to their port.
“Oh Lucy!” Jane said when they reached the drawing room. “I’ve had the most marvelous idea! Well, it was your doing, really.”
“Me? What did I do?” Lucy was mystified.
“You invited Andrew to the pageant! Brilliant thinking! He’s been holed up in his bedchamber like a grumpy bear for weeks now, even before Cecilia jilted him. We need to get him out of the house. Encourage him to meet other people and stop feeling sorry for himself.”
She gave Lucy a speculative look. “And now that I think about it, you would be the best person to do it. Cheer him up, I mean. I haven’t seen Andrew in such a lively frame of mind since…well, before he went off to war.”
Lucy was horrified…and hopeful. “You want me to be in charge of cheering up Andrew? Why not you? You are his sister.”
“I’ve tried everything I know, and it’s no use. You are with him for an hour and he’s laughed twice!” She grasped Lucy’s shoulder. “Look, I’m not asking you to marry Andrew or anything like that. All you have to do is come for visits, bring your sisters, persuade him to get out of the house, things like that. You can do that, can’t you? For my sake?”
“Well…” said Lucy doubtfully.
“You do like Andrew, don’t you? Want him to regain his spirits?”
“Of course.” That was the problem. She liked him far too much. It wouldn’t do to get her hopes up and then have them dashed to pieces.
“Then it’s settled.”
And in spite of everything, Lucy was glad that it was.

About the Author

A former teacher, Susana is finally living her dream of being a full-time writer. She loves all genres of romance, but historical—Regency in particular—is her favorite. There’s just something about dashing heroes and spunky heroines waltzing in ballrooms and driving through Hyde Park that appeals to her imagination.

In real life, Susana is a lifelong resident of northwest Ohio, although she has lived in Ecuador and studied in Spain, France and Mexico. More recently, she was able to travel around the UK and visit many of the places she’s read about for years, and it was awesome! Taking the Hint-Finally

Several years ago I was sitting in the jury box at the county courthouse, wondering when the defense attorney would dismiss me. While I’d been called for jury duty several times, I’d not been selected to serve—most likely because I spent twenty-eight of my thirty-eight years of State employment working for public safety (read law enforcement) agencies. I’ve never been sworn or carried a weapon, but defense attorneys figure if you worked for them, you must be on their side.

Anyway, since the case was being tried in criminal court, the prospective jurors had to fill out a voire dire—a questionnaire about our backgrounds and how much we knew about presumed guilty versus innocence.

After the attorneys finished questioning me, the judge said, “I see, Ms. Brice, that you’re an author. Would you like to share what you write?”

You need to know that I was probably the oldest person in the courtroom and I could feel my whole face heat. Still, I proudly responded, “Yes, your honor, I write erotic romances.”

Everyone, including the judge, laughed.

A sister erotic romance author—also a seasoned citizen—was recently featured on a national TV program about our publisher. She writes even hotter than I do and will tell you her age without hesitation. Me? Until recently, I’ve been stuck in denial. (Me? That’s not for me. That’s for some old person!)

I don’t have any idea what my friend’s sales are, but with some +/- 130 books published, she’s doing something right! So maybe it’s time for me to take advantage of my years of living. Maybe I should bill myself as a “Senior Citizen Who Scribbles Steamy Stories.”

What do you think?

BTW, my twentieth release—Temptress of Time—releases in print on December 25, 2013. Buy yourself a belated holiday present and stay warm with my steamy ménage/time travel.

Romance – More Options Than Ever Before

With multimedia and transmedia, Romance readers have so many options open to them today. It's helpful to readers to know some of what’s available. First we hear the terms transmedia and mutimedia a lot nowadays. Mulitmedia is the same product in different forms. I'm going to use my books as examples to make it easier. My Ebooks: Druidess, The Druid Bride, The Wolf and The Druidess, Queen Of Kings, Prince Of Powys, Peace Love Music, To Love A London Ghost, and Conquistadors In Outer Space, all come in a print option as well. Another example is my eBook, The Scottish Selkie, which will be available as an audio book soon. I plan to put my self-published eBooks: The Scottish Selkie, The Celtic Fox, The Celtic Vixen, The Scottish Selkie and A Fine Caldron of Fish in audio, and print. Both of my publishers, Eternal Press and Ellora’s Cave have begun offering some of their authors’ books in audio. More and more books will come in more than one form such as eBook, print, audio, and even graphic novels.

The term transmedia means developing a story across multiple forms of media to deliver unique content in each form. This content is linked together in narrative synchronization with each other. Henry Jenkins who coined the phrase Transmedia, defines it as storytelling that “immerses an audience in a story’s universe through a number of dispersed entry points, providing a comprehensive and coordinated experience of a complex story.” So writers might have a book and a game, with the game as new content which expands a bit more on the world, the story, and the characters from the book.

As far as my transmedia, I'm keeping it simple right now. I have my novel, The Scottish Selkie, and I have a short story, Samhain Warrior, that has the same characters and is in the same world as the Scottish Selkie. It explores Malcolm’s original transformation from human to selkie in  a bit more detail. The Scottish Selkie is in eBook and Audio (Soon) but The Selkie Warrior is in a different format, it's on Facebook. Everyday, I offer the exclusive story, one paragraph at a time on Facebook. So that's transmedia. I also have a pinterst board of the world of The Scottish Selkie, so again new content. Also I post on twitter, still another form of media, about the Selkie Warrior story on FB and the Scottish Selkie pinterst board, and the novel, The Scottish Selkie. What I just described are four forms of transmedia based on the main source, the book - The Scottish Selkie.

What does all this mean for the reader? Readers, you can now choose if you want an eBook, a print book, an audio book or graphic novel, even. And you will also be able to explore the world and the characters of a book with new content in short stories, comics, games, videos, music, and more. You have options you probably never dreamed of when it comes to reading books. Transmedia is an area in which the Romance genre needs to move ahead as the SciFi and Fantasy genres have a jump on us and are offering a lot more transmedia options for their readers.

It’s fabulous to be an author or a reader now while the publishing industry is transforming and offering more options than ever before. Please comment below on your thoughts on transmedia and multimedia. Readers, would you be interested in playing video games or reading web comics based on the characters and the worlds of some of your favorite romance novels? Authors, please comment on transmedia and multimedia and tell us what you are your publishers are doing to move in that direction.

WELCOME, FALL!

A new season is here!

September 22, 2013, at 3:44 p.m. CDT marks the exact moment when fall arrives and the astrological calendar enters the sign of Libra. The Autumnal Equinox signals the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere when the sun appears to cross the celestial equator from north to south.

Derived from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night), The days and nights will become nearly equal in length, creating balance, as daytime and night both have durations of approximately twelve hours.

The Harvest Moon is the name of the full moon arriving closest to the Autumnal Equinox. In two years out of every three the Harvest Moon rises in September instead of October, as it has this year. No matter where you live in the Northern Hemisphere, the moon will look round and full as it rises in the east around sunset. Farmers will work well into the night to gather their crops as the bright light of the Harvest Moon fills the sky and shines down on the earth.

September also marks the lunar cycle when grapes are traditionally harvested, pressed, and stored to become wine. As the light of the full Harvest Moon, also called the Wine Moon or Fruit Moon, shines bright across half the world, sit close to the one you love and toast the new season with a traditional glass of full-bodied wine or a cup of cider. Who could ask for a more romantic setting than love, a good vintage, and a warm blanket spread beneath the glow of a full Harvest Moon to welcome the new season.
