Interviewing the Muse - Michael Mandrake

Greetings Sweet & Sexy. Welcome to another post by me, the weird one, the crazy one, multi personality author, known by few as Sharita Lira.

For the next three posts, starting this month, I’ll be interviewing my muses. Today, I’ll start with Michael Mandrake, next month Rawiya which is the closest muse to me as far as personality, and in September, snarky and wicked, BLMorticia.

First of all, for those of you who don’t know, here’s a little something about The Triad

The Triad, otherwise known as the characters in the head of Sharita Lira are three separate muses that are the driving force behind her small amount of success. Misses Lira sees her own life as one that is very ordinary, so instead of presenting herself out to the world, she created three personalities that continue to haunt her all hours of the night to get several WIP’s done at the speed of light, and push her to the brink of sheer exhaustion, but she loves it and that’s the reason she hasn’t told them to get the hell out her head.

Now, that you know that much, please welcome my most successful muse, Michael Mandrake. 11 titles currently in ebook and or print. He is my golden boy so far, receiving the most praise. He has 2 coming out this month and several more working.

SL: Michael, how are you?

MM: Very good, Sharita. You know this may land you as a candidate to be put in a straight jacket right? *grins*

SL: Well honey, that wouldn’t be the first or last time someone has deemed me crazy. So, number 1, how long has Michael been writing?

MM: Only since last year. We just started creating some great m/m or gay fiction ideas and went from there. I’d say it has been a very successful partnership, wouldn’t you?

SL: Most definitely. You are my gay male so it works. Tell me Michael, what inspires you to come up with so many great ideas?

MM: Well, usually the things you watch or listen to. Music might be the biggest. I love a lot of the groups you continue to force into your brain. They harbor a lot of emotions and interesting topics so it’s easy to get an idea or plot from that. Also, some of the, *ahem* adult films…

SL: Oh yeah, that too. (I interject) I’m not ashamed at all. I love some good male porn and well, my musical tastes are great, so of course there would be plenty o plot bunnies coming from that. Tell me what’s the latest WIP for Michael? I know you have many.

MM: Oh yeah! I do. *grins and crosses legs.* I’ve got 6 out of the nine working for the Triad. True Meaning 2, African Sun 3, Taming Wild Horses, Lessons in Ink, Mi Familia the free read, and my gay fiction suspense, Closely Guarded.

SL: Wow! Well tell the readers which one you’re bugging me about most.

MM: Well, Mi Familia we have to update every week for the blog, GayDemon.com and Literotica because it has a small following, but the one that has me going is Closely Guarded. We’re learning a lot on the fly about suspense, police work etc to complete this. I’m happy with the characters as well as the plot which seems to already have a conclusion.

SL: Fascinating. I love that one too. AS is very popular as well though. Sakina and gang won’t shut up most nights.

MM: very true but they are satisfied for now. *grins*

SL: The crowd already knows that we pick our characters by face. A lot of them are models and musicians. Why not explain what personal traits you look for? What is the ultimate Michael Mandrake character?

MM: Great question. I look for my characters to be emotional, romantic, intelligent, and flawed. They may be physically gorgeous but there’s something inside of them that makes them imperfect. Maybe they are jealous bitches, conceited, big time alpha’s with a scarred past, etc. They must have something that sets them apart from everyday men.

SL: Awesome! I love that answer. So, in saying that, who’s your favorite at the moment?

MM: Oh man, that’s a toughie. I love all my characters but my fave right now is Dr. Nicholas Fairlight from African Sun. He’s an alpha male, bisexual, sneaky, smart, and has a dry sense of humor. Very British! He’s quite attractive and open to everything. Nickie can also be cold which is one of the things people will love about him. Nicholas takes no shit from anyone.

SL: Whew, a little of BL came out of you there.

MM: *laughs* We sometimes play off one another, Sharita. You know that.

SL: Very true. What person or writer would you say has been your mentor?

MM: Well, it’s none other than my editor at Sizzler, Sascha Illyvich. I’ve learned a lot from him and take heed to everything he tells me. He’s been a big help, giving me great advice as well as encouraging me to be a better author.

SL: Awesome: Sascha will loosen you up a bit too because you are a bit of a tight ass.

MM: Well that works in some circles. *laughs*

SL: Ahhhh! *chuckles* You really have been hanging around BL too long. Okay, back to the interview. Give us the next Michael Mandrake publication coming out.

MM: Well, it’s from XOXO called A Second Chance. It’s a story about two cops who’ve both lost their partners. One is searching for another lover while the other is more concerned with keeping his high rank on the police force.

The tale is a great one with most likely 2-3 books to follow so we shall see what happens.

SL: That’s awesome. You’ll give us the official blurb and excerpt in a moment right?

MM: Yep.

SL: Well lastly, so we don’t take up too much time, give the audience the links of where we can find you and what you intend to accomplish in the next 5 to ten years?

MM: *grins and sits upright in chair* Well, you can find me several places.

I also blog for Its Raining Men. http://rainingmenamen.blogspot.com/ on most Monday’s unless Rawiya or BL take over.

Currently, I’m published with XOXO, STARbooks Press, and Sizzler Intoxications

With XOXO I have 6 titles: Photogenic in Tina B’s LGBT anthology, Jude’s Gift for Valentine’s Day in the Love Tells All anthology, A Gift of Myself in the Xmas collection, A Different Kind of Family Portrait in the Tattoo Anthology Vol 2, True Meaning of Love and A Second Chance both sole author.

STARbooks I have 2. Sorry Man My Bad in the Sweeter the Juice Anthology and The Wretched: The Delicacies of Lust Liquor and Cannabis in Rock and Roll Over

Lastly, I have 3 with Sizzler Intoxications. Only When I Lose Myself in the My Sexy Valentine anthology, Longing for the Normal State of Vertigo in Riding the Rocket,  and the upcoming story, Binding Justice in the Bound by Romance antho releasing mid month.

In 5 to 10 years, I hope to still be writing and making strides as an author. I know as I and the rest of the Triad, become more seasoned, we will stick around. God willing, we’ll be creating tales that make you tingle and think for many more years to come.

SL: Awesome Michael. Thank you so much for being here today. Audience, I hope you enjoyed my most popular muse. Look for his writing on the blog and let us know what you think when you pick some up. Thanks again, Michael

MM: Thanks Sharita. Here’s the cover, blurb and excerpt from A Second Chance to come out with XOXO publishing this month.

Blurb: Hesitant to begin a relationship with someone new, two police officers who have lost their partners in the line of duty try to deal with their obvious attraction to one another. Will one of them accept the other’s proposition to start over or remain alone because of their places on the police force?

PG EXCERPT:

While we continued to chat, I noticed DeClerc in my peripheral. I couldn’t help but stare at him. I moistened my lips, biting the bottom as he came closer.

Damn…

“Um, hello…” I looked past the chief to take a long gander at Daniel. I stood up, extending my hand. “I’m Farris Beason.”

He accepted. “Daniel Declerc. Nice to meet you.” The handshake was firm, his hands soft like a female.

Don chuckled, “See Beason, if you would’ve been in the right frame of mind you could’ve joined Daniel today.”

While we exchanged smiles, I gawked at the pretty face in front of me. Daniel was even more gorgeous up close. The only distraction was the defect on his finger. Who was lucky enough to call him theirs? I had to find out.

“Pity,” Daniel said with a grin. “Maybe when you’ve recovered from your wild night?” He cocked an eyebrow.

I laughed, “Yeah, um…maybe…”

We’d broken our hand gestures but not our gaze. Maybe he did play for my team, but the question remained, who was he married to?

I'm with MM- I love characters that have flaws- it makes them seem real- hey, we all have flaws and are imperfect-

Thanks Dawne. All the muses like the imperfect men. Michael writes them better than the others though.

I thank you for stopping by!

All authors "hear voices" in their minds...watch scenes playing out, etc. Your head appears to be a little more crowded than usual. But no calls for a straight jacket will be coming from THIS crowd! You are preaching to the choir and we are singing along with you.
Great excerpt, and interesting concept for blogging.
